Being an immigrant myself, I believe it takes courage and a willingness to forego comfort and familiarity, to be able to live in a foreign country whose language you don't speak. These interviewees aren't tourists. They live and work in Korea for the long haul, so kudos to them for their courage! As a Korean immigrant to Canada, I just feel so sorry for them having it so hard. And it bothers me to hell that my own country of origin still don’t have any form of anti-discrimination law and general public doesn’t have grasp on any kind of sensitivity, racism and lots of other modern universal values. Some even believe by committing crime you lose your human right. Sexual minorities are despised and people with disabilities are treated 2nd citizen. When considering they NEED immigration as birthrate hitting rock bottom, I don’t think the glory that Korea enjoys nowadays will not last that long

She makes an astute observation at 05:38. This extended adolescence is evident in so many of the foreigners, specifically English teachers, in Korea. Despite loving Korea, it’s one of the biggest reasons I left just before I turned thirty. In a lot of ways, Korea is too fun, and if you aren’t careful, it’s easy to stagnate, especially if you have professional and familial ambitions. It’s not impossible to do, but it is much less likely to be achieved than it would be in your home country. If I could only stop time, I’d love to spend another five years in Korea.

I'm from Indonesia, and i've been to Seoul once. One day i bought some street food, the seller asked where were from because we obviously don't speak korean. I said im from Indonesia, and yes i could see his face went down the moment i said that. And the funniest thing is most of them think that Indonesia only consists of forest, jungle, stuff like that, they're even kinda shocked that Indonesia also has Starbucks. Like...come on😂😂

The stagnation part that was mentioned at 05:38 is pretty on point as a Korean who lives in Canada. I have never thought about it but since I moved to Canada for my degrees it's just way easier for me to focus on my career and build up what I need in Canada compared to Korea because Korea is just too much fun although my experience is a little different than what she said since I'm Korean and she's not. There's always things to do you don't have to suffer from thinking like how am I supposed to get there or such things. If you want to do something, pretty much everything can be planned and done in a day if you are willing without many struggles. That being said less distraction is here in Canada. I have started spending time myself way more and ngl it was quite depressing at first but for now I am doing a lot more for my career without so much distraction ongoing in my life and I feel I have become mature more quickly than I would have been if I were in Korea.

I’ve seen a lot of arguments in the comments but the only thing I want to say is guys, every country has racism, I’m Vietnamese but I also experience racism when I visit some countries in SEA too, but I know not everybody is bad which is same to Koreans. Maybe this girl, unfortunately, had to experience this but every study-abroad student experiences this once when they study in a foreign country. I also know many Vietnamese students that have good Korean friends too and there are Vietnamese KZbinrs who share about their lives in Korea, and the stories sound fun most of the time. When I was younger I felt much the same way, and it bothered me. But as I get older, it bothers me less and less. I think it truly depends on what you are after. Just like back home I felt no obligation to feel one way or the other about 'foreigners' in my country, I now accept when I encounter the same POV by locals while living outside my country of nationality. It is the reality of living outside one's world of origin. I count myself fortunate to live in a place where I am not considered to be THAT much of an oddity - that helps a lot, too. BTW, I offer this as my experience and views only. This is not an attempt to negate or not acknowledge what you have said. As time has gone by and I have experienced living in several countries, this is how my views have evolved over the years.

Do foreigners go to Korea to become Korean? Do they not care about their original country at all? I think if you were born and raised in Korea, that scenario would make sense. But to those who came from abroad to study/work, I don't know why they would want to be considered as Korean. It comes with both the good and bad. Trust me, being a foreigner is easier than being considered a fellow Korean. Most foreign countries don't have the cultural niches that would make them acclimate to Korean culture.

@@estherkang The problem is that some people even if they are citizens of South Korea they are treated with the cold shoulder just for being foreigner and giving somebody the cold shoulder and dont give respect and treated as a stray dog is not really cute . For example in my country if you are a foreigner living here and became legal citizen you are not treated as something from other world,we gonna give you the same attention that the locals and dont have problem with making interaction with you,we want you to integrate to the society and the community

@@Moon.J.I I'm no expert on illegal immigration in South Korea, but, from what I do know about the subject in other parts of the world, it is a fair assumption that illegal Southeast Asian immigrants must be doing all the low-paying jobs in South Korea, much like Mexicans in the United States. The presence of illegal immigrants in a rich country is actually not harmful; on the contrary, these immigrants are willing to do the jobs which the natives don't want to do. And many of these jobs involve total exploitation, since the employer is under no obligation to pay his employees; and, if he is willing to pay them, it is usually at a rate much lower than what he would pay to the natives (i.e., the Koreans in this case). So, I don't think illegal immigration is a justifiable reason to hate an entire ethnic group. In fact, general hatred against any ethnic group is never justifiable.

It won't be easy for a foreigner to live in Korea for the rest of his life. It is a place where Koreans also have to live fiercely every day. In addition, Koreans perceive different ethnic groups as different nationalities. Proficient Korean and stable workplaces are basic, and I think more effort is needed if there is no family relationship such as marriage with Koreans.

reasons i decided against moving to korea in the past: 1.i can't eat korean food everyday ! sure they have chinese or italian etc but because korea lacks diversity of immigrants unlike vancouver , the chinese/italian /greeek /mex aren't authentic are suit korean taste buds 2.seoul gets boring after a while. every train stop is littered with pubs and 'barber shops' 3. i can see why so many korean commit suicide. it can be a depressing place. one time while walking back to my airbnb near Mapo-gu i saw droves of drunk people walking home by themselves like zombies......i even saw a 40+ woman cursing and screaming at a wall......... For some folks they like being the center of curious attention even if they don't readily admit it. In addition they can carve out a possibly profitable niche career/business for themselves per this interviewer Jerry from Nigeria. And even if there is a lack of "diversity" in a homogenous society like South Korea at the moment, there has been a tremendous improvement in this respect ove the past twenty years or so. I can GUARANTEE that you will not find another country/society in this world that has seen such high rates of transformation both in the physical and cultural aspects of a society. But hopefully South Korea, my mother country will also retain many of the traditional culture that's worth preserving, and not turn into another moral cesspool.

@Pooh There have been black people who have lived in Korea way before Kpop or Kdramas were really worldwide. So that's not always the case. Some people live there because their partners are in the military. Or they are a representative for their job that now has a base in Korea. I've been hearing a lot about how many black people are moving there because any business you open can be successful pretty fast. And through the process, they fall in love with the food and culture. Its also considered much safer there than in America, health insurance is extremely affordable, lots of benefits. The people I notice who go there for kpop and kdramas actually don't stay long at all. Because they realize it's not like that at all.

I’ve seen so many expats who stayed in Korea too long, often at the local expat bar every weekend. Korea is alluring, but don’t forget life isn’t supposed to be a perpetual party. For a lot of expats, living abroad is such an important chapter of their lives that the temptation to extend it beyond what is healthy persists. It’s easy to go from fun to washed up.

Being Southeast Asian myself, it disgusts me knowing that their disappointment is obvious despite the fact that many of them go to those countries for vacation and learn English in the Philippines and this is how they view us? Many Koreans will deny this, but their actions (and inactions) are clear as day. Even if they oppose discrimination, the fact they do nothing (or close to nothing) about it makes it clear to me they don't really care about anyone but themselves. Koreans should be ashamed of themselves. Until they change their ways, I'll never accept them as worthy of respect or trust unless they prove themselves deserving of it. At least SE Asians are not nearly as depressed, childless, and dependant on cosmetic surgery to feel comfortable in our own skin

It's like trying to deny that Korea has among the highest suicide rates in the world just because many people there are still alive (for now anyway). There have been videos (probably on this channel) where it was revealed that lighter-skinned people tend to receive better treatment than people of color. There have been other videos where Koreans revealed that respect is such a big thing in their culture and yet fail to show it as proven by the countless stories of bad experiences shared online, which has cultivated a reputation around their discriminatory attitudes, especially with signs from establishments that flat out says "No Indians or Pakistani allowed" or "Only Koreans allowed [because we speak broken English]" kzbin.info/www/bejne/fnqZeWWGaqilqKc So whenever people share bad experiences and others say "not all Koreans are like that", maybe not in your experience, but such is the case with others and unless we experience it for ourselves, we have no obligation to take such words to heart, and little use in trying to "convince" us otherwise. Experience is the best teacher, after all

I am south east asian, and i studied in seoul for 2 years, that was the worst experience i ever had in my life, and i worked in middle east for 1 year as non muslim, that says a lot. Its like they really looked down the people from south east asian. Not just old people by the way, the youth too. But i think they are not racist. If ur skin colour darker but u come from US or Europe they will respect you, they will talk to you. If u light skin but come from south east asian, they will ignore you. Is that called racist or not, i dont know Tehy dont realise, if there is world war 3 in the future, that east asian region (taiwan-china mainland-korean peninsula-japan archipelago)will likely become battle front or at worst become nuclear target. I can sympathize the Vietnamese girl. Even though, you're not from Vietnam, just because you're asian and not Korean, they expect you you're most likely Vietnamese or Chinese and they ask you directly or just decide to treat you down. But I should assure that not everyone is like that, there're very friendly, kind, open-minded Koreans out there. Also, it's very hard to make local friends here in Korea eventhough you can speak in Korean, it's almost impossible to make friend with pure local Korean with no experience of even travelling outside Korea. So, foreigners make friend with foreigners or Koreans, who are raised or lived outside of Korea. And for corporate or professional job, even if you have same or better qualifications but just because you're foreigner, they think or treat you like you can do less than Koreans and you will be forever foreigner even with perfect Korean skill and act exactly like Korean. I’m struck by the parallels between the experiences/ feelings of some of the long term expatriates & what happens to some who try to extend their college undergrad experience beyond the 6 year mark. Like the one young lady stated, you look up one day & life has moved on for so many of your former peer group members; but you’re still doing a lot of what you did as a freshman/ sophomore. It ain’t a pretty sight. All the young people in this video, including the host, should recognize their South Korea experience will be a relatively short period in hopefully a long life. As such they should act accordingly & continue to strategize realistic pathways to their definitions of life success. The danger for those who don’t operate the way I just described is they run the risk of losing a decade of life living a sort of suspended animation of all the things they were hoping to avoid by trying to live long-term in Korea.

When I look at social media it seems that there are many people who want to try other jobs besides English teacher who has low salary. However since they do not speak Korean if they want to live in Korea but there is nothing they can do other than an English teacher. And even if they can speak Korean Korean companies don't give them much opportunity because they prioritize Koreans. This is because there is no reason to choose foreigners who have different cultures and are considered to be more difficult to communicate. Therefore there are many capable foreigners who want to live in Korea but leave due to lack of job opportunities and difficulties in obtaining a visa. So I don't think it's just because they're not good at Korean. There are complex problems such as xenophobia and inefficient visa systems.

I suggest you should not come to South Korea because I guess you aren't qualified for the Korean standard of immigration. There are many foreign students from south east Asia, central Asia, India, Bangladesh and eastern Russia in South Korea and they take master's programs and Ph.D in science and engineering to work and live in south korea after graduation. Reminds me of when I was living in Shanghai. At an international university all the different nationalities would interact and talk with each other while the Koreans would just be in their lame little bubble. They think they are very cool, yet nobody outside their bubble think they are. Would never travel to Korea after that, and I’m Norwegian.

That's interesting! My husband said some very similar thing. He said it's hard to make friends with Korean background or at least maintain a longterm friendship with them (he grew up in the US.) He feels that there is a Korean immigrant bubble and it's hard to break in. I did make some Korean friends in my grad school but again, it's hard to maintain that friendship with them either. I don't know why.

И это очень странно. В век интернета так вообще -читай и изучай. Помимо этого, когда мы путешествуем, всегда берем экскурсии. Но одно я поняла, мы в России очень неплохо живем. Мы хорошо питаемся,можем позволить себе всё, у нас своя личная недвижимость даже у детей-школьников, несколько машин, недвижимость за границей,в том числе в Корее. И ещё: у нас нет этой боязни потерять работу, главное-здоровье, всё остальное можно заработать. Особое внимание мы уделяем образованию детей. Чем шире у человека кругозор, коммуникационные навыки, тем легче ему адаптироваться. Жаль,что жизнь так коротка. Сколько стран, сколько тайн. Мне всегда было интересно изучать историю, но профессия связана с точными науками. Математика-царица наук.) Если бы у меня была вторая жизнь, я бы освоила еще пару профессий.

Discrimination is some kind of contagious East Asian thing. Back then when Japanese became the first developed Asian country they looked down on the whole Asians. Japan colonized Korea in early 1900 and invaded China in WW2 and the rest of Asia. Then from 2000 South Korea becomes a rich country and they've been doing exactly what Japanese did in 1900's: looking down on other Asians. South Koreans forgot the fact there were poor South Korean immigrants moved to USA, Canada.....in early 1960's seeking for better life as well. Some South Koreans even emigrated to Chile. Finally here comes Red China as powerful state and they follows what Koreans and Japanese beginning acting bully. I'm Vietnamese and I live in Canada. Here I met lots of Chinese immigrants (mainland Chinese, Taiwanese, Hongkonger), some Japanese and Koreans immigrants whose parents moved here after WW2 and Korean War, they keep a low profile, being cool and hard working people.

as a foreigner living in South Korea, SKorea is a very conservative country. i'm not saying this from a political perspective. If you come out as a LGBTQ, there are not any discrimination, legally but you may face indirect discrimination socially. I'm not joking.

@@blunt3862 Of course, there are a couple of gay areas in Seoul and they are Itaewon and Jongno. There are many bars and club for gay ppl in these locations Itaewon is known as a filming spot for the Kdrama called "Itaewon class". Jongno is for the older gay ususally over 40's Korean and foreign gays have fun in these districts and there are places for straight ppl in Itaewon and Jongno, too. But straight ppl rarely go to gay spots in Itaewon and Jongno, which means that gay communties in South Korea are kind of closed. I know a Korean gay celebrity who was and still appears in some dramas, movies and tv shows(his surname is Hong) but I think he is a very rare example. I guess that there are other LGBT celebrities in the Korean entertainment industry but they don't come out after seeing how Hong got treated when he revealed himself. If a person comes out or gets outed, it will be no problem legally but as I told you, you can get social and indirect discrimination in South Korea

You'll notice that people who describe having bad experiences in Korea tend to do the interview in English, while people who say they've had good experience in Korea are answering questions in Korean. This shouldn't come as a surprise. If you're a foreigner and only try to speak English in Korea, you're not going to have a good time. Learn the native language and people will be lot more open to you. Korea is not a natively English speaking country. It's just the way it is. They're not going to change their way of life just for you, you'll have to adjust to their world. I mean you are in a foreign country after all. What did you expect?

Not trying to downplay the importance of learning other languages but where I live in Canada, there is a Korean community and even some of them do not English even though they probably should, especially as staff in a store/restaurant, etc. given that they are the outsiders. Also last I checked, English is a required subject in Korean schools. If they're so smart, then why do they struggle with this compared to other subjects? I mean it's one of the most valuable languages/skills in today's world. Maybe they don't need it, but the same can be said about pretty much any other subject. Also I'm pretty sure that when Korean people travel to non-English speaking countries (ex. Germany, Thailand), and take a vlog, they don't actually speak the language of the host country so there's kind of a double standard there
