From my experience WD40 works fine for ignition locks. Only a small amount is required. I use a clean tissue to wipe off the excess that comes off the key for the next couple of weeks. It pulls a lot of crud out of the lock, wiping off black oily residue. I also carry the key wrapped in a bit of clean paper towel or tissue in my pocket to avoid it picking up dirt or lint. Wd40 can clean/displce crud out of ignition contacts. I use it about 3 times a year.

Make sure you use your key to open the doors even if you have a electronic key FOB. Locks seize over time.

I never do, I just lubricate the tumblers. The lock mechanism doesn't need the tumbler to work unless the tumbler is stuck in a direction.

It`s not the key that wears out, It`s the springs holding pins get contaminated and lose spring strength over time

It's probably both, I've seen keys on high mileage vehicle where the teeth on the key are dull and has lost shape. After we get the ignition key cut based off the VIN you can see a difference in shape.

Have you heard of Ballistol - made in germany ... non petroleum silicon base. Trusted by guns/arms owners. WD 40 or others that tend to attract dirt doing more harm than good overtime. Great for my garden tools and so much more.
