A Hollywood sequel doctor adds a dash of pizzazz to the script of "Gremlins 2: The New Batch."
About Key & Peele:
Key & Peele showcases the fearless wit of stars Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele as the duo takes on everything from "Gremlins 2" to systemic racism. With an array of sketches as wide-reaching as they are cringingly accurate, the pair has created a bevy of classic characters, including Wendell, the players of the East/West Bowl and President Obama's Anger Translator.

What’s hilarious is that all the crazy came from the director himself, who was the same guy behind the first movie. Warner Bros kept begging him to return for a sequel and he kept turning them down, then finally agreed to it only if they gave him complete creative control. They agreed, and the absolute madman just decided to turn the entire thing into a batshit crazy self-parody mocking the fact that he didn’t even think the film needed to exist in the first place.

@@DeathShark00 The sequel out-shined the first even without the context, it didn't just stick to the exact same formula and had the audacity to do something that wildly different from the original film which a lot of movies don't do very often and the mayhem was upped to 11.

I just absolutely love how the humor comes from how flamboyant and uplifting Peele's character is. There isn't even a joke being set up. He just swoops in, treats everyone like they're a creative force to be reckoned with, and puts a smile on everyone's face, and leaves in a way that's both larger than life but also endearingly clumsy. And then, yes, IT'S ALL ACTUALLY IN THE MOVIE! If there was ever a Key and Peele skit that could lift you out of a funk and get your own creative juices flowing, this is it.

Can we just take a moment to appreciate Peele's acting in this sketch (and in general)? I mean he's just a phenomenal actor and I think many people overlook that due to his humor or their intense like for Key (who I'm a fan of as well), but he was great in this. From everything from the way he held himself to the way he executed such a difference in intonation and inflection in speech to the actual change in his voice, to create such a rasp. He's amazing. I have a hard time imagining the calm and composed Jordan Peele to this flamboyant and extreme character (and all his other characters, i.e. Meegan, Continental Guest, Ester, Carlito, etc). I really do enjoy watching Peele.

And no, Jordan Peele is not the spitting image of Joe Dante in any circumstance, considering Joe Dante is a white guy, who's never dressed the way Peele looks in this sketch. Do an image search of Meshach Taylor in the movie "Mannequin," from 1987. Same bright flamboyant clothes, and nearly the same style sunglasses, and he's a black guy as well. It's also from the same time period as Gremlins 2. This entire sketch is basically an ode to 1987-1991 in general. Seriously have no idea what you're even arguing at this point. !!

Same Cosby sweater. look up pics of Dante when filming gremlins 2. Or seek out the bts content from the dvd that i've no doubt is here on youtube. This sketch is almost funnier when you know the real story behind Gremlins 2. Joe Dante did _NOT_ want to return to make this movie. He was happy with and exhausted by the original Gremlins and definitively wanted to move on and do other things, and Warner Brothers tried to make the sequel without him. They failed hard, and begged him back with _triple the budget and complete creative control._ To make a movie that he felt should not _have_ a sequel. So, Mr. Dante was like "well alright, fuck it." That's why half this movie is insanity and the other half is pointing out plot holes in the original. He still did a great job though. It's a fun movie to watch when you know what the filmmaker is up to.

I saw Gremlins when I was so young I never knew what the filmmaker was up to but I knew Gremlins 2 was 'odd', and felt nothing like the original, it was so far from the genesis and this sketch feels like it feels in the gap. It didn't stop me enjoying the film though.

You cannot overstate how incredible, nuanced, and indelible this performance by Jordan Peele is. I've watched this so many times, and every time you see little quirks, subtle expressions and details that make it such a masterclass in creating a character that's both idiosyncratic and flamboyant without resorting to an outlandish caricature. Having lived and worked in Hollywood, I can tell you this kind of person definitely exists, and Jordan was able to reveal his amazing versatility and depth of acting and understanding of humans that resulted in such a memorable and believable persona. Bravo!

The moment comes and goes so quickly it doesn't even interrupt the flow of the sketch at all.

Gremlins 2 was actually directed by Joe Dante, the original director of Gremlins 1. Dante *DIDN'T* want to make Gremlins 2, but after the studio kept asking him, he agreed on one condition: that he could do WHATEVER he wanted with it. So he made it a satire of the first film.

Guess who didn't like Gremlins 2? Writer of the first one, Chris Columbus! He was pissed at the change in direction, seeing it as disrespectful, and has been recently talking about writing the third film which is in development, as taking it back to the style of the first and 'making up' for G2! I think a lot of people would disagree with him there......But I guess it's a similar situation to when Halloween 4 was made to make up for Halloween 3, Last Crusade made to make up for Temple Of Doom. It's like saying Terminator 2 needed to go back to the style of Terminator, or Aliens needed to be like Alien.

I guess if he was bothered to make a sequel repeatedly, but I wouldn't imagine why he wouldn't want to. He didn't even need to use a new cast or anything there are many possibilities that can be done with these green tiny tinkering terrors. Though Gremlins 2 kind of did it with the smart building/lab. But imagine if like we had a scientist character similar to Billy's dad who is studying Gremlins and it gets out and multiplies and starts messing with his various inventions and what not. Or even Gremlins in a not Disney World esque theme park, messing with the animatronics, hiding inside mascot costumes. Or even a military complex could you imagine them driving a tank?
