In the 90s I worked for a sample library developer. (not Spectrasonics) Spectrasonics and really Eric Persing was the "famous" name of Keyboard sound design at that time having previously been the developer for Roland's sounds. We had a discussion after meeting Eric at the Namm show about Eric's style of sound making and we called it "Zow". Zow comes from if you were trying to pronounce a filter sweep by speaking. What we meant was that the sounds were all made and produced to be impressive on their own with no other music. This could be from what the sounds were but often came from lot's of production. In the 90s that meant lots of preparation of the samples. Sounds that had random panorama spread or moved left to right, recorded through preamps and EQs and various ways that made them sound idealized, and not like their real life source. Spectrasonics is still like that 25 years later but now with the addition of lots of FX in the sample player too. Notice the tape emu that's on by default on the sounds in your video. There's something to be said for sitting down and playing a keyboard sound and having it be inspiring right off the batt. UVI takes a different approach though by just sampling the sounds as they are from the instruments with no audible saturation, eq, or compression. They have versions with a little preset fx programming, but UVI's thing seems to be giving you samples that are the straight up source. I prefer that myself. I know how to produce sounds for the track I'm making, and often if not usually, predone production is not good because it's not custom to your TRACK. It's designed to wow you when you play it solo. Zow, splash, etc full spectrum taking excitement. Any production in the preparation of the samples cant be undone and in the case of FX from the player they must still be bypassed most of the time. In a nutshell UVI sounds have more potential, if you are capable of utilitizing it. Thanks for the video John.

I have always thought the same thing since back when UVI were Ultimate Sound Bank...I preferred them over spectrasonics...spec sounds over produced...often too polished...I've heard from others UVI has started getting away from their previous strengths lately,..I hope that is not the case and they continue the USB tradition

As a person that makes a upcoming competing product with both these companies…I would say I kinda lean in the Spectra side here. I mean, ultimately, some people don’t have the mix skills to make it sound “pro”. I think that’s a good selling point. Excellent product from both companies!

I'm actually very surprised at how many Key Suite models I preferred over the Keyscape equivalents. The MK-80 from Key Suite is also incredibly satisfying. Thanks for the in depth comparisons, I bought Key Suite Digital after watching your previous video. :)

Great video. Obviously, I’d love to see more comparative sounds BUT, it’s very clear that Keysuite is a beast all by itself. Ultimately it comes down to preference but you can’t beat $49 with a stick by comparison to Keyscape. Ideally, I’d have both. Thanks John Mike!

Consider character and context when considering these plugins. Both are very good in their own way. But for me, I would pay $49 for the mk80 and the Kurzweil samples alone!

They're both very close. KeyScape just has that wow factor and more warmth. You couldn't tell the difference in a mix, but on their own KeyScape sounds more dynamic and rich. Really awesome and detailed comparison you've done here - much appreciated

Did the yellow light on the Keyscape auto-pan button mean it was on or off? Width may be a difference. Perhaps you could effectorize the UVI to get to the Keyscape sound? Keyscape sounded like adult contemporary radio. UVI seemed to be more potentially versatile.

Great video but wouldn’t it be more appropriate to use the Key Suite Electric to compare against Key Scape? Or better yet the Key Suite Bundle or is the Digital version the same because the KeySuite sounded digitally different! The test would have fared more if the Electronic sound was compared to the Electronic sounds in the Key Scape! But the sound in the digital was nice but not showing the warmth of the Electronics of the Electric Piano’s in Spectrasonics! So the Tweaking can create a similar sound but the KeySuite Electric would’ve been more of an accurate comparison! They will always be a digital sound vs a vintage electric sound so would be used for different circumstances & conditions! But not a vs match because you owned the Two do you have the Digital sounds in Key Scape that you could compare & do a vs for? I could hear the difference & was wondering if that would show if they were both the same models & version! The digital will be a digital version of a Mark 1,2,3 & so on! Not the Electric version!

i have at least an ep vst. i have zenology lite and i want keyscape bcs i don’t really like zenology ep’s character. i also have the Pianoteq (evaluation version) but I can’t buy it because it’s both very expensive, and it takes up a lot of my cpu (intel core i3-6100)

Raynold Gustave That wouldn’t be a bad comparison but I think Key Suite is a budget version of Keyscape where as MK Sensation only simulates the Roland MKS 20 alone. Either way. I have MK Sensation and I’m about to get Key Suite. Eventually I’ll get Keyscape but $49 is too accessible to not just get it.
