As your kids return to school, they may be excited about playing school sports. Just remember, the weather at the beginning of the semester can be brutally hot, and that can threaten the health of student athletes.
Dr. Mandie Tibball Svatek, a pediatrician with University Health and UT Health San Antonio, says that when the heat index hits 95 degrees coaches and school officials need to take precautions. Parents need to ensure the school has safety guidelines and everyone knows the warning signs for heat exhaustion. Dr. Svatek says you can help keep your children safe by making sure they get medical checkups before they participate in school sports.
