Digital Piano Stands - Overview and Recommendations
Introduction:
Digital stage / slab pianos are built to be portable - something light-weight enough that musicians can carry it for short distances, transport it in cars or public transit, or store it in small spaces like a closet, dorm-room, or a touring van. Manufacturers achieve the smaller footprint mostly by compressing the electronics and speakers (much like a laptop vs a desktop) and ridding it of it’s pedals and furniture.
Type 1: The “X” Stand
Profile KDS400 'X' Keyboard Stand ▸geni.us/KDS-400-Stand
This simple design gets its name from it’s design. There are two sets of 2 steel pipes each connected with a steel strut. There is a scissor-type folding action with a basic axel that connects the two sections; this design allows the stand to be collapsed completely flat, making it the lightest, easiest, lowest cost stand on the market. It also has the lowest weight rating and isn’t known for its durability.
When to use them:
Where portability or cost is the only consideration, and your piano weighs less than 40 lbs (ideally less than 30 lbs).
Type 2: The “Double X” Stand
SaveOnMany ® Double-Brace X Keyboard Stand ▸geni.us/SaveOnMany-Stand
AmazonBasics Heavy-Duty Adjustable Keyboard and Piano Stand ▸geni.usBasics-Stand
RockJam X-Frame Pre-Built Keyboard Stand ▸ geni.us/RockJam-X-Frame
This is an improvement on the first design, where the horizontal pipes that act as the feet and platform are braced with two sets of scissoring struts, instead of one set as with the first design.
When to use them:
Where portability and cost is top priority, and your instrument is somewhere between 40 - 70 lbs.
Type 3: The Z Stand
Roland KS-10Z ▸geni.us/Roland-KS10Z
Neewer® Heavy Duty Z-Style Stand ▸geni.us/Neewer-Z-Stand
On Stage KS7350 Heavy Duty Folding Z Keyboard Stand ▸geni.us/On-Stage-KS7350
The Z-stand is one of the best blends of portability and stability on the market. Several companies make the type with a few differences in how they collapse. But once fully deployed, they’re all virtually the same.
There are two steel ‘Z’s which sit parallel to each other, connected by two telescoping shafts, and the vertical part of the ‘Z’ also telescopes, giving the stand both height and width adjustment.
When to use them:
If you have the budget for a $100 - 150 stand, and it will be receiving frequent use and/or moves, this is an ideal option (with the collapsing arms). They’re rugged, stable, and can handle the most heavy and large of the keyboards out there. Hercules and Roland both make a great option.
When not to use them:
For super small keyboards in the 61 or 76 note range that are 20lbs or smaller, this would be overkill.
Type 4: The Folding Table Style Stand
I don’t actually know if the industry has a ‘name’ for this, but these types of stands look like those ubiquitous folding tables that you see at every wedding or event hall. The top of the table is rectangular, and two sets of legs swing down from hinges along the two short sides of the table.
Type 5: The “T” Stand
The final stand type is referred to as a T stand, since that’s precisely what it looks like when folded up. There are four articulating arms, all with a 90 degree elbow, which form the legs of the stand. They’re attached at either end of a central spine, and are highly flexible.

I have a double X stand, I have a 2 tier and had a 3 tier for many years, these stands are rock solid and can hold 300 pounds.. Ultimate Support IQ 3000 are the stands I speak of, been using this brand for over 18 years.. My current setup is Fantom X8 bottom, Korg N 264 middle and OASYS 76 on top, second stand is Roland FA-08 bottom and Yamaha Modx7 on top.. These stands have memory lock for setting up the height and also stabilizing end caps for uneven surfaces.. I trust these stands with the heaviest of keyboards and have never let me down.. I do own a On-Stage "Z" stand and it is great, but takes too long to put together on a gig, I have also had the Ultimate Support Apex stand, 3 tier with the extended arms, this was a solid stand and set up was quick, and it too held some heavy gear. Roland RD250, Ensoniq, Korg etc. But my go to is the IQ3000... Hope this helps...

Such a good video, thank you. I started learning just over a year ago. I bought a Casio digital piano and bought the stand that was sitting next to it in the shop. For the first few months it was perfect, but I noticed as soon as I wanted to play faster with more downward motions it completely died on me, collapsing half way through practice. It's interesting that no one really gives much impotence to the frame that's supporting you big investment. Great video 😊😊😊🎼

You're very welcome! Thank you so much for taking the time to check out our channel! We appreciate it. :) It is definitely a good point that many people consider the stand or frame to be a bit of an afterthought, but it is important detail to consider for a number of reasons. In addition to protecting your expensive investment, in some cases, it is also important to ensure that it is providing the desired adjustability or height to make your playing experience as comfortable and natural as possible.

@Zoco101
@Zoco101 4 жыл бұрын
Yes Stu. The double X is better (than single) for any weighted action dp. The difference is astonishing. The best ones have a snap-lock handle in the centre. The cheaper ones with just a few holes for adjustment are seldom convenient because they end up being too high or too low and spoil the performer/student's posture. I saw you demonstrate a Casio in a recent video about pianos under US $1,000 . It was on a single X stand, and it bounced so much that it was a bad ad for portable pianos. BTW I like your jazz playing very much, though its sophistication might be over the heads of beginners. Perhaps intimidating? Even so, these are great reviews/presentations and are a credit to your company. And thanks for being concise. There's almost no waffle or repetition in your presentation. Other channels could learn from this.

Between the Z-stands and the column stands, which has offered you greater stability and minimal set up time? I don’t see how the Z-stand would be more efficient than a column stand, but I also do not see how column stands would be as stable as a Z-stand. About X-Stand: is it better to have the stand deep bigger or shorter then the piano? For exemple if the piano is 28cm deep: better a x-stand deeper or not?
@MerriamPianos
@MerriamPianos 10 ай бұрын
It depends on other aspects of the stand's designs. You want the piano's base to be in contact with the rubber stoppers on the end of each arm of the stand. That will ensure optimal stability and avoid the piano slipping/falling off the stand.

I got the wrong stand- heavy duty X. I tried putting pressire on it to make sure it was secure. Put my new RD 88 on it and it collapsed. I want to send it back and get Roland recommended RS 13. I hope my stage piano is okay. Fortunately it was less than 3 feet from the carpet. Lousy X stand. I should have researched them first and watched your video. Thanks for the information. I googled Zed stand and nothing returned. Are you talking about the stand that looks like a Z?
@MerriamPianos
@MerriamPianos 21 күн бұрын
I'm so sorry to hear that your X-stand collapsed. I hope your RD88 is okay! A Z-style stand like the Profile KDS450MA (which they refer to as an M-style stand) would be a good bet in my opinion. It is far more robust, stable, and adjustable. :)

Hello sir :) I'm looking for a digital piano for practising piano at home and using as a basic midi controller. I was looking at the mp11se, however because I'm clueless I didn't realise it doesn't come with speakers, so i'd need to buy speakers, an amp, the piano itself etc. I now know that it's due to the fact it's a stage piano, which generally don't come with built in speakers due to quality/weight etc. however in terms of action, quality, functions it seems to be pretty close to what I'm looking for... I'm looking for a digital piano with the highest quality action, and realism, that I can use for practice in my room. I'm looking for something that's pretty basic however high quality. My main necessities are that I can use with headphones, which also comes with built in speakers incase my family wants to hear. Also with MIDI capability so I can mess around in logic and make stuff up for a bit of fun. Also am interested in playing around with a VST. Mainly I want the best action, built in speakers, and midi capability. Price range anything within £2000. I wont need it to be transportable etc. as it'll stay in my room. I liked the look of the mp11se, the only problem is that I don't have speakers or an amp and so it's all going to be about £2500 + (all together) at least. I'd like something similar to the MP11se but less features however with built in speakers basically.

@Jenairaslebol27merde
@Jenairaslebol27merde 4 жыл бұрын
yes, they are excellent. well-manufactured, super compact when folded, and REALLY stable (da wackelt auch mit nem schweren stagepiano echt gar nix). legroom is obviously the best you can have, allowing for unconstrained positioning of your pedals / foot controllers. they also offer possibilities to add extensions for a second and even a third keyboard and more. prince range is something around 120..150 bucks, and definitely worth the money. the simple x-stands are great if you want to quickly put up a stand for a light ("plastic") keyboard with no heavy playing or so. but not the thing you want to lay your stage piano onto, as said in the video. the A-stands (or similar shelf-style stands) like the ones from jaspers are great to store your synthesizer collection, they can take up to 5 or 6 keyboards. but keep in mind, when the stand is so packed, playing and operating your keyboards can get a bit inconvenient.

Since you seem to sell such stand items, it is hard to understand why you didn't use some for props. Now, DO THE VIDEO OVER AND DO IT RIGHT THIS TIME :)

They're very inexpensive but they're cheap. Who woulda thunk it?

Some of the stands are inexpensive but extremely sturdy/solid. Models like the KDS450MA by Profile for instance.

@@MerriamPianos I ended up ordering a Liquid Stands Z stand. The price was economical and every buyer who wrote a review gave it a good review. That compares to X stands, where every model got bad reviews from some of the buyers. My approach is, acquire things only as they are needed and buy at the top of your price point, not the bottom or even the middle.

Though I know from your other videos that you are not, you sounded like a rank amateur on this video. You didn’t know the names of the types of stands or the nomenclature of the stands. You didn’t mention several categories of stands that are getting more and more popular (Like the GIBRALTAR GKS-KT76 KEY TREE stand, the table type K&M 18820 OMEGA PRO KEYBOARD STAND, and the large platform stands made for heavy keyboards like the ROLAND KS-G8B KEYBOARD STAND and YAMAHA L-7B KEYBOARD STAND) It was like you didn’t do any research and just decided to “wing it”. This video was definitely not up to your usual standards.
