Really elegant design and proportions, with beautiful grain on that walnut. Just couldn't resist that 'signature' bit of brass, could you ;-) I don't have a dowel jig any more , so I got some drill bush inserts in a couple of sizes to make up my own guides / jigs. These inserts have serrated outsides and are a press-fit into standard holes. In my case 15 mm outside for an 8 mm dowel , using MDF for the jig construction. So no marking out for lots of dowels or custom patterns ! I'm in the UK and I'm sure you could get these in the US if your interested.

Something like this (along with a proper piano stool) is on my build-list for this year. The x-shaped stand my daughter's piano sits on is a complete pain - the keyboard isn't held securely and wobbles around, and you can't tuck a chair underneath it properly when not in use which eats into the floorspace of what is quite a small and busy room. I had planned to just use plywood, but this might tempt me to splurge a bit more and get something a bit nicer.
@AB-nu5we6 жыл бұрын
Hand tools! Make great furniture, like your piece, possible. Gorgeous project. I flatten most of my boards by hand, then use the DW 735 to create that parallel surface on the other side like you did. Curved blade on the jack or fore plane helps, makes it quick(er). Heard a little 'Smokestack Lightening, Howl'n Wolf, 1964' in that piano solo at the end. A little more practice....

So I made one myself using the plans from your website. I came out really nice. The only thing I would caution future builders about is the with of the stand. Make sure that u leave about 2 in on each side of your keyboard. Since keyboard differ in size each stand should be unique. I didnt take that into account and was not able to put the slow close lod stay because of spacing issues. Other than that it was an awsome build thank you so much !!

That came out really nice-Excellant job!. I am going to make one just like it. Just a thought... If the pocket holes bother you, next time (if there is a next time) maybe install the pocket hole screws on the inside where they won't show. Also, there are wood plugs made to fit the pocket holes that can be glued in place to help disguise the holes. Another option would be to use small decorative corner bracing on the inside. So I am off to build mine exactly like yours only using cherry lumber. Thanks again for sharing!
@franciscofragoeiro52295 жыл бұрын
I have a recommendation. Since the keys aren't covered, you really should get a felt cover for them, otherwise dust will start to build up inside the keys and that's a pain to clean. It looks great!

Tamar, you could have used dowels to attach the top instead of figure 8 fasteners. The wood movement is in the width of the board not the length. An easy way to remember, trees like people grow to certain height when mature, but they may always grow wider.
@3x3CustomTamar6 жыл бұрын
Right. Since the movement is in the width the top will expand but the bottom aprons will not. Those will expand vertically based on how I put them. I think the fasteners were a good choice here.
