My favorite thing about this performance is in the middle when he makes fun of the crowd for having no sense of rhythm. My man, keeping it real. He knows he's making a concert video, and he has the balls to mock his fans. My hero.

I thought it was kind of a dick move. I mean, mocking the people who paid to be there and enjoy your music...probably most of whom aren’t musicians so they’re not just able to pick up on the tempo so easy... Update: after a number of crybabies responded with their tantrums over my comment…here’s what I’ll say, I’m not a Devin Townsend simp…I know a handful of songs…the ones I know, I know very well. I cover this song on guitar on my channel. But I don’t know what his concerts are like. And if he’s being this way, while also being self-deprecating and just goofy in general, then I pretty much rescind my original remark. You can wipe the tears away now…everything is going to be ok.

It sounds like 3 signals in the mix because devin uses a dual amp rig, one wet and one dry, usually a mesa boogie and an axe fx, the mesa boogie is the dry amp. edit: forgot to mention Devin writes his songs around 2 things usually, open C tuning, and lots of delay, he says he likes delay because when he's writing it's like interacting with the past.

I will disagree. Why? as a whole video production is great. Punky Bruster is the best Devin lol After that there's accelerated evolution, the By a Thread series, Casualties of Cool, huh...Again, I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't be the first to mention that judging Devin's work by a single period would be like opening up a pack of fruit stripe gum and calling the entire pack whatever flavor you happened to pull out first. Unless you literally dislike one of the other flavors, the whole pack of gum is excellent and quite diverse. But you gotta pull more than one stick out. Maybe throw some Rollins Band on him to change it up lol

What's great about this particular version of this track is that he was sick on/around that day. Normally he easily nails the clean parts after the high pitched rough vocals, but here, the illness it ads this little bit of edge to his clean vocals near the end of the track, giving those parts just that little bit extra rawness and heartfelt energy. You hear him pushing himself beyond his limits, instead of just winging it. Love it.

Devin has often stated that he has a special love for suspended notes - I think from classical music during choir practice in school unless I misremember - and you can hear them all over his music. Regarding the "stretching the song", this song and most others that he played during this period with this band were played with backing tracks, so they all have click tracks and countdowns in their in-ears and there's no room for improvisation as far as structure goes. (At one concert I went to the engineer accidentally sent the guide track to the PA for a short while. "Did you actually hear that?" Devin asked. Fun stuff.) And I love your description of how the 9:th pulls your soul open.

If you watch the video of the concert. When Devon hit the scream at the end the guitar player looked at him like Holly shit dude. The camera catches it quick then moves quickly. Lol it awesome because on the studio version he doesn't do this last scream. That why I like this version of the song.

Fun fact, If I remember correctly Devin was congested after a cold in this live. If you really really enjoyed this, I suggest the same song played in Plovdiv, he's doing it with an orchestra, his voice is pristine, even so many years later and the live-mixing is insane.

When he's half way through the song and I hear "What do we say about his voice? we are already in awe of what his capabilities are" I cant wait to see what happens on the last part of the song! Every time I hear it I get goosebumps

This song is what got me into Townsend. He's such an amazing singer, guitarist, & composer. We saw him last year in March of 2020 right before lockdown here in Houston, TX. Amazing show! Still can't believe we haven't been to a live concert since. Love his latest album Empath which should be listened to as a whole but Sprite & Borderlands are my favorite and last song on the album is a prog rock metal epic, Singularity. He really takes you to another world. #devintownsend #empath #genius

Shame that the video got blocked. Devin would be into what you do here big time. That has to have been Warner 100%. His newest album would likely be an eargasm for a composer. I hope you've heard it!

I’m curious to see how you would react to Coheed and Cambria. They’re a concept band that base their albums (except one of them) on a graphic novel written by their lead singer. So all their songs follow some sort of story and each really has their own kind of genre, some songs are kinda more “poppy” than others.
