you gotta check out the live studio 'Of Matter' by Tesseract. Daniel Tompkins (their original, and current singer) rejoined the band after a short hiatus in which they recruited the help of a singer named Ashe O' Hara. Ashe did an amazing job in studio setting, and their album 'Altered State' is their best work (in my opinion). Would be a nice contrast, and the live in Sphere Studio recording of 'Of Matter' is quite amazing. Thanks for checking out TesseracT, one of my favorite bands!

The abrupt end to the track is due to it leading into another track; A trait Tesseract is well known for, sometimes having several parts or movements tied together to form a larger cohesive piece. Dan the vocalist here does have a very clean tone but he is fully capable of some grittier vocals. I'm sure you'll get requests for songs from their record "Altered State" featuring a different vocalist Ashe, who was also fantastic. To hear some older Tesseract with Dan before he parted & later returned to the band I'd recommend "Concealing Fate pt.2". A really groove driven track with some more aggressive vocals. kzbin.info/www/bejne/p5zMaGRol8xratk Additionally I think you'd really appreciate the group Monuments, who are considered one of the big "djent" bands such as Tesseract/Periphery. Fun fact all 3 bands have actually links with a guitarist each of Monuments & Tesseract once being in a band together & the former vocalist of Monuments was also in Periphery for a short while. My pick for Monuments would be "Mirror Image". It's not their most technical track by any stretch but its's a great introduction to their groovy style & Chris Barretto's fine vocal work. kzbin.info/www/bejne/p5zMaGRol8xratk Apologies for the huge load of information haha, really enjoying your analysis of these tracks though :)

You hit the nail on the head on "spacing". What makes Meshuggah so incredibly groovy and what sets them apart from their "djent"-prog juniors is exactly this; the way they lay down the quiet moments within the rhythmic chaos is what grounds their songs and makes them so head-bangable.

Love Tesseract, but I think their best work is when they abandoned the screaming vocals from their debut album in favor of more melodic vocals on their second album, "Altered State". I think the "Of Matter" and "Of Mind" suite's of music on that album represent their best yet, at least for me. As for recommendations, I'm sticking with Frost, "The Dividing Line". I own thousands of albums from the 60's through the current day and there's not a single album that contains anything quite like Frost. I've noticed that across TesseracT albums, the hi-hat always sounds like it's on the right side. Most music I listen to situates the drums as if you were actually sitting behind the kit, which as a drummer, I love. For me, I just picture a left-handed drumkit setup and it makes sense. But mostly, I think that simple sound reversal does even more to set TesseracT apart from their contemporaries. Truly one of the greatest bands of all time. interesting when you talk about the hi hat being so prominent on the right side, i think whats actually happening is jay (the drummer) is keeping a constant 8th note hi hat pedal chick throughout most of the song and what you're actually hearing is a cymbal stack on the right that has a very quick decaying sound so it sounds similar, but a bit crunchier than an actual hi hat

Just a heads up the end of that song bleeds into the next song. I was so glad to see you reacted to this, TesseracT's talent is unbelievable. As a song writer and musician myself for 30 years I have such an appreciation for it.

This song flows directly into Hexes, which is also a masterpiece. I feel like you have to listen to them together. This is their best album. Also, Id recommend Inmazes by VOLA

Hey! Loving the videos and insight you provide! I usually dont ask for people to watch stuff but from your like of playing with time signatures and other weird progressive stuff I think you might enjoy a band called Demetori. They are a somewhat unknown band from japan, so would be really cool to have someone shine some light on them! For the song you can choose pretty much anything, since their song titles are mostly japanese even I dont remember most of the names even though Im an avid listener of them :) Keep making great content, loving every upload!

Your talking about space in the music is important. The space is letting the music and the song breathe. I play guitar and sax and one thing many guitar players forget in their playing is to let the music breathe. It comes naturally to horn and wind players who have to take a breath but other instrumentalists have to feel the music enough to let it breathe when it needs to. The best players, Steve Vai for example, let it breathe. He also plays with that feeling to express tension and release. Jeff Beck is another player that knows when to let the music breathe.

I would really like to see your reaction and knowledge to what I think is an incredible live performance. Leprous - Contaminate Me (live at Rockefeller Music Hall) Basically two bands playing together, meaning two singers, two drummers, and so on. It leaves me in awe every time I watch it.

As others have said, the "Of Matter" songs from Altered State are Awesome. Wither that or "Singularity" from the same album. Or they have a 25 minute 6 part song called "Concealing Fate" that they released on their first album. It's kind of the reason they gained to so much popularity.
