Haha, my wife and I once saw an online article with some family themed suggestions to do to celebrate Earth Day. On the list was Devin's song earth day. I don't think the article's author bothered to listen to it first!

Such an oddball choice, and I love you for that! This is one of my favorite songs from Devin's earlier stuff, but I did NOT expect to see a reaction to it. It's almost always Kingdom or Deadhead - both great tracks, but we've heard all the reactions. Glad to see this one get a little love.

This is a great track from a great album. "Terria" got me through a dark time in my life. Devy has such great music and production. I've been a fan since 1993. "So just shut your face and take a seat Because after all, you're just talking meat...and music? Well, it's just entertainment folks!"

I think he mentioned in his book "Only half there" that his mom used to play the piano when he was a child, and she did so with the sustain pedal always pressed, which influenced him a lot in the way he uses reverb and delay and echo building up his signature wall of sound.

Why do people recommend love when almost any song off “city” is so much better? Not saying love is a bad song, it rocks. But it boggles my mind that it gets blindly recommended every time over masterpieces like “all hail the new flesh”, “oh my fucking god”, “home nucleonics” and “AAA The fact that there’s no reactions on KZbin to the studio version of “all hail the new flesh” is something of a tragedy to me (the live version is fine, but the studio version destroys it)

There's so much good you can delve into with Devin. His stuff is all a sonic journey. He creates this wall of sound that just wraps you up and carries you away. That and he's an awesome person, I took my son to his first concert many moons ago, it ws Devin Townsend Project and Gojira and both bands were so awesome to him. Devin kept making the funniest faces at him and after the show jumped down and came over to shake his hand and meet him. The guy from Gojira are all super awesome guys also, they brought him up front and shook his hand, gave him sticks and such. Like an amazing experience that my now 17 year old holds dear to his heart.

Hey! I've really enjoyed all your videos. You've clearly got a powerful musicality and curiosity behind all this and it's lovely to see - I'll finish my compliments another time, though. I doubt it'll be useful, but I'd like to recommend a couple things. Devin's music is all over the place in terms of genre. It's impossible to recommend anything that captures the whole view of his career. That said, I think these are some good portholes: 1. Strapping Young Lad: Skeksis This track is one of his heaviest, when he was working with a bunch of other deeply talented extreme metal musicians. It's both Devin-experimental and a pretty good insight into the textures of his music when he spent his time in that genre. 2. Devin Townsend: Ziltoid the Omniscient - By Your Command This track is like a baton pass between his SYL days and his solo career. Devin, according to interviews, never really felt at home with the ambience of the metal crowd of those earlier days, and Ziltoid the Omniscient was the album where he came out as a nerd who loved Andrew Lloyd Webber. This track is a great and early insight into his passion for both hemispheres of his musical passion. 3. Devin Townsend Project: Ki - Ki Going softer, and building back up again. This one, like the whole of Ki as an album, is much gentler, ambient and emotional than anything that came before it. Ki, the ultimate track off that album, culminates in something that allows the handover to the following album, Addicted. 4. Devin Townsend Project: Addicted - Supercrush Takes the earnestness and gentleness of the last album and puts some massive strength into it. Also shows that, while he's returning to some of the same kinds of sounds as his prior career showed, there are different production techniques at play, and the whole thing has matured with him 5. Devin Townsend Project: Deconstruction - The Mighty Masturbator This album is a full explosion into the Andrew Lloyd Webber passion that informed so much of the first Ziltoid album, and that element has been in major focus for most of his subsequent music, in texture if not in style. 6. Devin Townsend: Empath - Genesis Very, very hard to explain. Bless you & good luck!

1. Devin gives you the best introduction to himself - The Retinal Circus. It's basically a big stage production that metaphorically demonstrates Devin's life and journey as a human and musician. 2. If you would have watched "Universal Flames" from that show, you would have seen his wife and child on stage as it's his kid's favorite song. 3. Just do yourself a favor and go listen to Ocean Machine: Biomech, *right now*, starting at the first track and put it on repeat a couple times until the entire universe is tuned to open C...or maybe it was already tuned to open C and we only just finally figured it out.

You know what I would LOVE to see you do. Since it's clear you're one of the few skilled "reactors" on KZbin, meaning you understand theory and can appreciate the complexity of this man, is to actually do a reaction to Devins Plovdiv show... I'd be more than happy to purchase you a copy of the show and send it to you so you could do this. I know it'd be a stupid long video. But I'd be highly interested in seeing what you think of the whole show, start to finish, and hearing your commentary on it. I'm sure this probably never going to happen. I’ve seen Devy a bunch over the years, with DTP, DTB & SYL etc. Hands down the best live shows I’ve been to. Was lucky enough to see him just before COVID hit touring his new album. Amazing. SYL gig in 2000s Devin - “Ok now I want everyone to turn to your best buddy, and kick him in the nuts as hard as you can!” Crowd - *laughs* Devin- “Aww come on. You’d do it for Slipknot!” Comedy as well as music. Love him.

Agreed he should check out Cynic. Although I'd recommend something from their original album like "Veil of Maya" or "How Could I" with the context that the album was so groundbreaking and influential with some of the founders of death metal bringing jazz fusion elements into metal. "Textures" is pretty much a jazz fusion track. Geebz would dig the chakra themes in the music too. I had the pleasure of seeing Devin Townsend, Cynic, Between the Buried and Me, and Scale the Summit at the same show 11 years ago. Such an amazing lineup.

@@Pyromanaic28 I could definitely get behind either recommendation for sure, I think the difference between the two albums is worth checking out either way. I brought up Traced in Air mostly because of recording quality and I think he'd enjoy the way the vocals are layered as well as the progressions (especially that major to minor shift at the start of Space for This), but I think any Cynic would be a great choice, and yeah Focus was so massively influential. Aah that's an amazing lineup. I saw Cynic with Hypno5e maybe 6 years ago? Great show either way!

Omg Geebz. You NEED to watch Why? Live at Plovdiv. It's the quintessential Devin Townsend performance. You will love every second of it, i promise

The tuning is open C, always. And yes, the keyboards hold those pads with a little overdrive and it sounds immense!!!

You're my favourite reaction youtuber, you just seem like such a nice person. And I really enjoy the way you talk

You nailed the open chord idea. Devin almost always plays in open C (or more recently that tuning down a semitone to B).

Also, you don't necessarily have to react to it for the channel, but before you put away this Royal Albert Hall performance, try to find the song "Universal Flame" from it. I won't spoil anything but if it doesn't make you feel warm and fuzzy on the inside and tear up a bit, you ain't no human being. :')

Well, when you sing and play an instrument, sometimes you make sacrifices here and there, otherwise both suffer. Sounds like he decided to not let his voice suffer. He said in a tuning video, that open C let him find octaves anywhere on the neck easily
