A polite word of advice: please do not hold back if you want to go into detail on a particular piece of the performance. We are here to hear you go to far out there. There are far more reactors out there that just blow out the usual unicorns on how great Nightwish is( spoiler: we know that already!). But reactors willing to go deep and nitpick and explain why they think Nightwish is great - that takes knowledge and insight in music most of those kind of reactors will never achieve. Keep up the great work!

I discovered them last year.....and watching this concert I was struck again by how Europeans know so many languages: Floor is a Dutch (married to a Swede by the way and living now in Sweden) singing in a Finnish band..at a metal concert in Germany with an international audience, and they and the audience are singing in English. It’s almost embarrassing as an American....and yeah, I get it......Europe needs a language that they can all communicate through and especially citizens of the smaller countries need to learn English: Americans don’t have a necessity to learn another language, and if we do, we don’t have the opportunity to use it (my high school French? Yeah, forgot most of it). But it’s STILL impressive to me.
@neffscape6353
@neffscape6353 4 жыл бұрын
The language thing is actually nothing special in Europe. I think every person knows at least another foreign language (English, usually) which is a true necessity to be able to work and travel around here. In addition, if you happen to live in a tiny country in the middle of Europe like me, you end up studying and using at least 4 languages on a daily basis. Knowing English, French, German and for me Italian (mother tongue) is very common where I live in Switzerland.
@wingedyera
@wingedyera 4 жыл бұрын
Here in the Netherlands you are taught English from age 10 (at least thats when we started), then when you start our version of highschool you are introduced to French and German which is obligated for at least 1 year but depending on which level of education you have you can drop or have to continue them. I think English is always obligated. I personally had to do both German, French and English until my last year (18 years old) and of course there are always additional optional languages to add so that probably adds to knowing other languages. Also the Dutch knowledge of English is usually relatively high because we usually don't dub movies or series. We only subtitle and about 70% of our television is American or British so 🤷

Frankly, anything from Wacken show. Also as you noticed their bassist Marko was singing, he's very good as well and there are several songs where he is the lead, like Islander from Tampere show, or Voice Of My Father (Isani Ääni is I believe the original name in Finnish). From their older time, check the High Hopes, the tribute song of Pink Floyd, absolutely amazing. From newer things their latest album is also absolutely amazing.

Nightwish are: Tuomas Holopainen - keyboards and main composer Marko Hietala - bassist, backing vocals, co- composer (2001-) Floor Jansen- lead vocals (2013-) Emppu Vuorinen - guitarist (in this line-up): Jukka Nevalainen- drummer (1996-2015) Troy Donockley - backing vocals, uillean pipes, tin whistles, bouzouki.... They have undergone some main line-up changes during their 25 years on stage: Tarja Turunen - lead vocals (1996-2005) Sami Vänskä - bassist (1996-2001) Anette Olzon - lead vocals (2007-2012) Kai Hahto - drummer (2015-) Most of the band members have solo or side projects going. For example, Tarja has been successful as a solo artist singing metal and opera for years. Floor of course has her bands Revamp and After Forever (pre- Nightwish times), her one record only- side project "Northward", guest appearances in groups like Ayreon.... She's also taken part in the Dutch TV show "Beste Zangers" 2019, which made her popular to Dutch people outside of the metal fanbase and brought her some chart placements. Marko Hietala has a solo project going, but he also appears as guest- singer in other bands' work. Also, before and parallel to Nightwish, he had his band "Tarot" together with his elder brother. Oh, and btw, he just won the Finnish version of "The Masked Singer" in his role as "The Doctor". Troy and Tuomas have a side project called "Auri" together with Tuomas' wife. Emppu was (or is still?) a member of the rock band "Brother Firetribe". And Kai, their new drummer, is also the drummer of Wintersun, another popular Finnish metal band.

Love your reaction, and yes as others have said I'm here to hear what you have to say about it so dont hold back, pausing is fine as long as you have something to add. Romanticide is like the end of the tutorial from a reactor's NIghtwish trip, from here it opens out beautifully, you have ridiculously heavy music and Floor's growly vocals with "Yours is an Empty Hope" heavy but more playful with "Ghost River" emotional gut punches with "Poet and the Pendulum" (as other have said worth researching this one to get the most out of it, and get the version with lyrics.) Epics like "Greatest Show on Earth" , get Marko singing with Floor as backup in "The Islander" or "!While your lips are still red" there's lots to choose from and some amazing places to visit. Personally I would go with either Ghost River, or even "Song of Myself" which has an incredible finale to it. To be fair you cant go wrong with Nightwish there are songs I'm indiferent to but I've yet to find one I actively dislike and they always put on an amazing show. Worth noting also this is an old line up, sadly the drummer in this performance had to bow out as touring was taking its toll, and they've added Troy who plays a lot of folksy instruments (lots of woodwind, bagpipes etc) and sings along with Floor and Marko.

Nightwish was formed in Finland in 1996 Band members Tuomas Holopainen Keyboard and 95% of writing/composing Emppu Vuorinen Guitarist Marco Hietala Bass Guitar Vocals Troy Donockley Multi instrumentalist and Vocals Tarja Turunen Singer 1996 - 2005 Anette Olzon Singer 2005 - 2012 Floor Jansen Singer 2012 - present Jukka Nevalainen Drums 1996 - 2014 stopped due severe insomnia. Still works With the band Kai Hahto Drums 2014 - present Troy is English, Anette is Swedish, Floor is Dutch and the rest are Finnish Symphonic elements of songs pre-recorded by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, London's The Metro Voices choir group and the London Young Musicians Children's Choir. Tuomas writes the music for the orchestra and choir and then Pip Williams of the London college of music arranges it. Tuomas sometimes wants more than the instruments are capable of giving. Tuomas has said. The way it works in NIGHTWISH is that I am very much a solo worker. So I try to make all the songs - even the arrangements - as ready as possible, as much as I feel that I have to give to the songs. Most of the riffs, even some drum fills and stuff like this. I just try to make it as good as I can do it by myself. And then I introduce the songs and demos that I've done on my own to the other members of the band, and then we start the rearranging process. You know, 'Could you come up with a better riff for this one?' 'Would the bass line be different in that one?' 'What about if the vocal line is like this?' And sometimes the songs change a lot Floor tweeted this If I hadn't had passionate music teachers in my high school, I might never have started singing. I was the bullied, insecure kid who dreamt of singing without knowing that I had a voice for it. "Because of my dedication at school I dared to crawl out of my shell and started to sing! I became more confident of myself and made friends and was forever in love with music. "Nothing is as wonderful and honest as making music together. Nothing connects as music can. Music education is therefore very important for many reasons. Floor's Wiki Bio Floor Jansen started studying music at the Dutch Rock Academy in 1999, entering the Conservatorium Tilburg three years later. She studied musical theatre and a year of opera. After After Forever split up she started teaching performing in her own course called Wanna be a Star?! She used to play the guitar, piano and flute and has completed several years of music studies. From the age of 16 all during this period she was fronting the the Band Apocalypse (later known as After Forever) in 1997 until they disbanded in 2009. She then did vocal coaching and formed her own band called Revamp which officially broke up in 2016 because of Floor's commitment to Nightwish. The RockAcademy in the Netherlands is an actual Bachelors degree, conservatory style, but focusing on the rock/pop industry.

You are just beginning your trip down this Nightwish rabbit hole. There's so much to tell you about this group that would take more words than I can leave here. The next song you should do is from this concert Wacken 2013. The song is Everdream. There are 3 main songs you should do, you have already started with Ghost Love Score, but the others need to wait. Enjoy this concert first then you can do the other 2. Poet and the Pendulum at Wembly should be done after a few more from this concert. Enjoy and I love your reactions.

Aloha man! 🏝🏄 Please keep on sharing your knowledge about their musicianship: we all know they're awesome, but sometimes we don't know WHY they are so awesome! We want details man, DE-TA-ILS! 😁😉 As Gabriel said, his list isn't meant to be followed chronologically: it's like a box of chocolates, you just have to pick up the one you want. Please check out older stuff too: Floor is their 3rd lead singer (and my favourite) but both Anette and Tarja before her contributed to make Nightwish so interesting and have their signature songs. FYI, Tuomas composes his songs in different ways, according to the singer's voice and skills: that could be intriguing for you, I think. Good reaction, liked it very much. Mahalo and greetings from Italy 👋🇮🇹🖖

No, go out there more lol. I love the insight into the minutia of how music works. As someone who isn't really as learned in music it is cool to hear exactly what is going on. Also something you'd probably love to listen to is a project Ayreon. "Ayreon is a musical project by Dutch songwriter, singer, musician and record producer Arjen Anthony Lucassen. Ayreon's music is described as progressive rock, progressive metal and power metal sometimes combined with genres such as folk, electronica, experimental and classical music" - per Wiki. I suggest starting with "The Day the World Breaks down" kzbin.info/www/bejne/pXfYfn6ap9-Dp7c

First time listening to your reactions. Thank you Sir so much for sharing yr professional thoughts with us and welcome to the world of Nightwish's addictive music. This Band has given us fans mesmerizing music experiences already since 1996. The keybord player Tuomas is not only a great composer but also such an incredible lyrical Mastermind. It’s so easy to fall in love with their music, no wonder this Band has a huge Fanbase in every corner of the World. I’m happy you enjoyed this one, and hopefully you will continue reacting NW.

Btw, if you are just beginning your Nightwish journey, be advised that the band began in the late 90’s, so you have quite a mass of material to work through. I live in what is essentially a village and I remember when they played the local pub. Nudge, nudge, wink, wink. (Where do all the background sounds come from? Two words: midi triggers.)

20 seconds in, liked the video for your salute to "lieutenant" Gabriel. I'll just take a second to join in on the salute before continuing your reaction. And thanks to you for giving credit where credit is earned! *salutes to both of you* Don't want to spam, so I edit this one. I really like your style. Great idea to follow the list from the Lieutenant and get their epicness in small doses, too many YT reactions focus directly on the set of long tracks, which are totally great to hear and I love every reaction video for them, but you make me especially look forward to it because I know you didn't rush it to get there :) Anyway, as I said, I like your style and please keep on "nerding" about anything that comes to your mind. Not only do I appreciate if I can learn some stuff from reaction videos, but also I watch them especially for the expertise the KZbinr has so I don't mind investing another 2-5 minutes of my life in learning some nerdy stuff; to be fair, at the current times they might be the best spend minutes of the day anyway. And I like your humor. "De-composing" - for real? Almost made me spit my tea. I wish you a happy new year, by the way and hopefully lots of children to gift with joyful minutes during your work :)

Yes there is a gospel choir provided by Metro Voices of London contract house that can be heard on backing track in many songs on the newer albums. You will also sometimes hear a children's choir in certain songs that is provided by another contract house whose company name I cannot remember but that some other people have mentioned.

Great to keep up with Nightwish! :) And it’s always great to be able to listen to the music of a professional’s ear and tell about the music through it. I appreciate it in these videos of yours! You could say that’s one reason to come back to look when you hear your professional opinion. You will always learn something new from your favorite band! And even if not always understand professional terms, so little by little I began to learn through the videos!

Definitely a band worthy of a very deep dive. This is one of their more aggressive tracks amongst an incredibly dynamic scale of compositional, instrumental, vocal and presentation mastery. Nightwish has at least 20 tracks that will profoundly reshape our appreciation for the capability of quality in music. Personally, for me, this particular offering happens to fall near the bottom of that list. That says a lot for what remains to be uncovered as you expose yourself to this amazing group. And, even in live venues, they do not miss a single note. Incredible stuff. Epic adventure! Truly appreciate the knowledge and unique perspective that you so generously share. Thanks!

If you enjoy Nightwish and their music, then I hope you'll also discover other huge symphonic metal bands (such as Epica, Therion, Within Temptation), they all have their unique, distinctive styles and feature incredible vocalists. Meanwhile, thank you for your reaction and a thorough analysis, it was very informative and fun to watch.

I can agree with a few of the other folks here. Go out there with some of the theory stuff. I can look up countless other reaction videos to just hear people say how great the music is. I come here for the de-composers point of view being a musician myself. Side note: I would love to see you check out Caligula's Horse. Another great progressive rock/metal band with a lot of amazing songs. A few in particular Dream The Dead, Songs For No One, Graves (15 minute epic) or Oceanrise. Again, great stuff. Cant wait to see more.

Just looking at comments, I believe I can make some assumptions about the metalhead community, although I am being one, so it's subjective. Listening metal music is like admiring architecture. There's a huge set of technique within, wrapped in a mesmerizing aesthetic. It's not like engineering as it's not about the productivity and the tools themselves but when you get into the musical theory and instrumental techniques, it's getting more excited and one respects the masterminds behind the masterpieces. Yes, we'd like to hear more comments about them from an experienced musical personality.

What I love about Emppu as a guitarist is something another reactor, Chase Cameron, pointed out. He never goes off on a tangent as a typical metal guitarist does. No flairs or extended riffs for the sake of it. He sticks to the room he's given by Tuomas and makes the most of it. Everything he does, be it simple or complex, fits into its niche in the song, is played the same every time, and you love to hear it :D
