I like the DJI a tad better in the end. Up close to the rocks and coral there’s a green hue to the picture but in all the deeper pictures the contrast is superior in DJI. The reef bottom is much more clear in the DJI from farther out. I also appreciated the wider picture captured on the DJI. Thanks for the video!

DJI seemed to be more "correct" from a color point and clearer in the longer wider shots, the GoPro has more "pleasing" color but as you pointed out not as correct. Either would be a good choice so it looks like it comes down to how long a charge lasts and ease of use and weight
@kristofkollar44312 жыл бұрын
Hi Aaron. The GoPro is better. If the size bothers you, get the Mini. I think you confused color temperature or white balance with the thermal temperature. When you use auto white balance, the camera uses an algorithm to decide what adjustments it needs to make to create a balanced image (not too green or pink, not too warm/yellow or cool/blue). The algorithms in the newer cameras got better at setting the white balance automatically underwater. Underwater white balance is challenging because the water blocks the red wavelengths of light. The deeper you go, the less red you have, so the camera has to add a lot of red and magenta to compensate. The GoPro sometimes looks pink/red for a few seconds when you come back to the surface, because it adjusts the white balance more gradually than the Dji (slower WB adjustement is preferrable, less jarring). Professional videographers set the white blance manually using a grey card and or shoot in raw to get a perfectly balanced image. You can also improve the color of your videos by color correcting in post (I know you are busy, this takes time and practice to learn and perform every time). The blocky pixelation on some of the Dji clips is compression artefact. The GoPro does a much better job at preserving information on busy scenes. Make sure to turn High bitrate and 10-Bit color on in the Protune settings. You can also download the GoPro Labs firmware to get even higher bitrates on the GoPro

Hey I just want to start by saying I’m a huge fan and I love the videos. I miss my home state of Florida and can’t wait to move back now that my wife and I are out of the military. Your videos are the perfect blend of informative and entertaining and I thank you for it. You have sparked a desire to start free diving in me that I can’t shake off lol. Thank you for everything you do. And as far as this video goes I think over all I’m gonna have to give it to the DJI. You seem to get more field of view in the footage and the color grading seems more accurate to what you actually see and almost has a movie quality to it. I think the DJI is better suited to your film style and would help set you videos apart from the other content creators out there. It would be nice to see how it preforms in dirty water and the mangroves side by side like shown here to be sure it’s best suited for where you film the most. Thank you for always making my days better and happy holidays.

GoPro for sure, i like the color correcting feature. I have an older GoPro and run a magenta filter to correct the green effect that comes from losing red from being underwater especially in the northeast. The downside is that it’s really noticeable on the surface and in shallow water but once you hit 30ft or so it clears up.

The GoPro appears to be better as the DJI has a green tint to the color. That being said the DJI had a bit more contrast in some footage. I would think there are adjustments on both to dial in the colors. I know the GoPro has some more advanced features for shooting video out of the water for those using it as a multi-purpose. Like you said they both provide very good footage so a difficult choice. Personally I would go for the GoPro for now unless DJI provides some color adjustment or had a firmware update for color correction IMO. Loved the hammerhead footage and the dive footage!

I really enjoyed the shark footage and thought it was really cool. As for the cameras I prefer the wider field of view and higher color rendering of the DJI but I think it almost needs color grading to reach its full potential. If you do decide to go with the DJI I would look into setting the color temperature manually and that should let you get rid of the green tones you are seeing. At least I think it should based on my experience using DSLR cameras for photography.

The DJI footage looks much nosier than the GoPro, which will really show when its murky or at dusk/dawn. Not sure how much color correction you do on your videos but most of the color differences between the DJI and GoPro can be changed in post. The DJI footage also has more contrast than the GoPro footage, which looks better straight out of camera but can be easily added back in post. One quirk of the GoPro footage is when you go from shooting underwater to above water, the automatic color correction makes the above water shot very pink for about a second or two (see 7:45). I've been using the GoPro 10 for about a year now and have been pretty happy with it for underwater footage!

A little worried about it's color saturation on the near-surface shots but GoPro had the best definition for sure.

U dont have the dji underwater mode on? It totally sorts the green
@KeyWestWaterman Жыл бұрын
From my understanding the scuba mode only changes the button functions.
@tobyarmstrongcameraman9207 Жыл бұрын
I did not go through all comments. Did you shoot the DJI in 10 bit. Also was it shot with white balance auto? What is the underwater mode on the DJI?
@KeyWestWaterman Жыл бұрын
neither shot in 10 bit, and both auto white balance. DJI underwater mode from my understanding just changes the buttons function
@mmorris8432 жыл бұрын
They both look great. but, i think the GOpro has the edge. The DJI might be good for fishing videos or top side footage. Is the battery life better on the DJI? I have an older gen GOpro and that was always my complaint. The batteries seemed to die quick.
@KeyWestWaterman2 жыл бұрын
and I haven't gotten that far with the batteries yet!

The DGI seemed to have more graininess overall and I think the GoPro wins. Are you using a red filter on the waterproof housing?

I like the saturation of the GoPro. Underwater the DJI had an overly green blue tint. Can you compare them above water? The DJI might have better dry color rendering.
@KeyWestWaterman2 жыл бұрын
yea some people do! thats why I asked for opinions. and I didn't wanna do much above water as this will be strictly my in water camera.
@itsafineone88722 жыл бұрын
Ahh. I understand. Underwater…. Me- I’m an amateur photographer and watercolor artist and I always try to use lightfast paints. -Have you ever seen an older poster or print where the reds and warm colors are sun bleached? All you’re left with is a blue green tinted print? That’s what the DJI reminds me of, at depth. I’m sure there are many other admirable features on the DJI but rendering it’s washed out. Maybe you can bump up the saturation on the DJI and compare to the GoPro as the saturation is what viewers seem to prefer based on comments. Just a thought.

Almost too close to call. There is one more test I would like to see but the first choice has to be based on whether or not one is more comfortable to use, easier to operate or more reliable. The other question I have is does one perform better & provide more contrast in green, cloudy, dirty water? Your video on harvesting fish for the week a few days ago would have been a good test. With the DJI already having a green tint, I wonder if it would amplify the green & murkiness of the water?? Just a thought.
@KeyWestWaterman2 жыл бұрын
yea ill have to get it in some murky water and see! would be interesting.

I'd been screaming the min I watched that hammer head coming up toward me...i like the different aspects of footage on both videos. Bluer water on the gopro and rocks on the bottom on the other video. I'd like to see the differents when your swimming thru the mangroves and sandy bottoms...

So in your opinion which camera depicts the color in the ocean better/looks more true to life.
@KeyWestWaterman2 жыл бұрын
probably the gopro, but that varies on depth. dji did better on certain things shallower.

Nice job! I think the gopro looks better but I having issues with mine. I was just in Marathon shooting with my Hero 11 & 12 the videos turned out nice but both cameras over heated and shut off. So I missed a lot of underwater action. I belive the DJI's have resoved that issue?
@andrewcooke44962 жыл бұрын
I’m torn between the two camera’s footage but I think the Go Pro just had the edge overall. I love the way those sharks just come in so close and then cruise on by! Goliath grouper fish looked so cool too.

yea def hard to tell! thanks so much!
@rickreighard84912 жыл бұрын
I prefer the GoPro, seems less grainy underwater but when you surfaced the DJI show a much bluer sky. When you did the initial dive you looked greenish? Perhaps the DJI temperature sensor took a little longer to adjust? Each had good points but it had more to do with different portions of the dive.
@rickreighard84912 жыл бұрын
When the shark went by it seemed like the DJI had more contrast.

Aaron, I gotta say I am such a fan of the dji products but I will be honest I like the go pro footage a lot more. The green hue is very apparent, but I think it got the Goliath better than the go pro. Ugh crazy, now I think I should get a go pro. Also have you tried red nd filters before I heard they are supposed to help underwater with colors.

What up my ocean brother . Pros and cons , It seems like the DJI has a better picture at the top but the GO PRO is my opinion way better as you get deeper and go down . So I would have to go with the GO PRO . And awesome footage of the Hammer Head that was priceless . As always great episode and thanks for what you do for us . DJI for the win! I was surprised I thought It would be a no brainer for the GoPro but the DJI color saturation was more appealing to me. Great footage as always!!
