🔶Shine On You Crazy Diamond🔶 is a nine-part composition written by David Gilmour, Roger Waters, and Richard Wright. It was first performed on Pink Floyd's 1974 French tour and appeared on their 1975 album Wish You Were Here. The song is a tribute to Barrett, who left the band in 1968 due to mental health issues.❤

In addition to this! While he had stopped showing up to some practices and was sometimes purposefully antagonistic to voice his desire to leave the band, the band claims to have unceremoniously "fired" him by deciding not to pick him up for practice one day, and never getting him again, leaving him to his own devices. When they were writing SoYcD a few years later, they genuinely had no clue what happened to him; until he showed up one day to their studio session bald, many pounds heavier, and mentally gone. They couldn't recognize him at first- their own former band leader. When they did, they wept.

Pink Floyd is timeless... it's always amazing to watch young YT reactors that only listen to rap / hip-hop, and then someone convinces them to listen some Pink Floyd... and then, that reactor's whole world gets turned upside down when they realize what they have been missing. And, I don't just mean Pink Floyd, there are so many amazing classic rock bands out there that you will enjoy!

Another great reaction Bro - great to see folks experiencing PF for the first time and dropping down their rabbit hole. This album, Wish You Were Here, for me is their best. They were all at a loss as to what to come up with after the incredible success of Dark Side Of The Moon, and found it very difficult for quite a while, but were being pushed and bullied by the record label to produce something. So, it's mainly about the alienation and separation that they were feeling generally, and this extended back to Syd Barrett with their incredible bookend pieces of the album, Shine On You Crazy Diamond. They are Richard Wright's crown jewels (his synth work), and Nick Mason's drumming was so complimentary. Amazing tributes both musically and lyrically to Syd. Welcome To The Machine and Have A Cigar are both about the music industry's greed and use of the band's success for themselves. The album cover reflects this with a handshake deal being made by two men, one of them on fire, getting burnt. Enjoy the rest of the PF journey.

Me too. Love them both, but love this one more. I think it's somehow more personal than DSOTM, less abstract and more immediate, if that makes any sense. I read somewhere that both David and Richard consider this their best work, and David felt the concept was more fully realized on Wish You Were Here than on DSOTM .

You mentioned whoever does their music belongs in the Hall of Fame? THEY do their music! They compose, write the lyrics, co-produce and perform their own music. Dick Parry is the guest saxophonist on this and the 'Dark Side of the Moon' albums. As for the Hall of Fame, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996. BTW, their live performances were off the charts. Consider taking a quick break and check out the live performance of the title track "Wish You Were Here" from the live 1994 Pulse concert video. Then get ready for the next masterpiece.. "Animals" 1977. Also, those are keyboards not horns. Richard Wright was a master of the keyboards/ synthesizer and set the mood for much of their best music. RIP🙏

Wish You Were Here, Welcome to the Machine are both all time greats. Wish You Were Here is my pick but I couldn't hold it against anybody for having Welcome to the Machine as their favorite. It woke me up to realizing that almost everything we are is programmed into us and that we can reprogram ourselves. Have A Cigar is a personal favorite of mine. Feels cool, smooth and maybe even a bit funky near the end, my favorite transition ever. Shine On You Crazy Diamond are beautiful pieces dedicated to Pink Floyd's mad founder ( Syd Barret ) but can also serves as the listener's own personal epitaph for the things we've poured our heart and souls into and dedicated ourselves to completely that have caused us to be isolated and distanced from those around us. Made especially poignant given Barret's story being one of schizophrenia that ended up having to depart from the band he had helped to form despite the early albums he'd made with the band serving as inspiration in the 60's for Floyd's later 70's output. I do like Wish You Were Here a little more than Dark Side but Time, Great Gig In The Sky, Money and Us and Them was probably one of the biggest spiritual awakening of a mass population in the 20th century.

The album starts off with Richard Wright on the latest synthesizer of the time (synths were improving in technology as fast as computers 15 years ago, 1 year old was outdated tech). Although they have hired a saxophone player for a few songs, but there are no real 'horns" on any Floyd songs. But a synthesizer can mimic a lot of things.

Bro, just found you and have now seen your first two Pink Floyd reactions. First thing, Yes, DSOTM definitely gets the edge over this one, but not by a lot. Both phenomenal albums. Lots of synthesizers in there, that's the instrument making a lot of those horn or sax sounds that you have mentioned. Also, lol, 10 minutes is nothing! If you're going to get into a lot of the music from this era, especially the progressive rock stuff, you'll see a ton of long songs. Stay in this rabbit hole, it's deep and excellent, but be prepared for a few more...Yes, Genesis, Rush. Based on your reactions here, I have a feeling you'd love them all. Enjoy the journey, as many others have said, it's always cool to see young folks discovering the music I grew up with and spent countless hours listening to on the floor with headphones, sometimes sober sometimes not lol. Enjoy brother!

Just wait until you hear the whole ANIMALS album. Their pond just gets deeper and deeper. Also, THE WALL, instead of just listening, is has a FULL MOVIE which the album is just a soundtrack. Watch the movie and you will hear the whole album anyway, plus get the context of some of the feelings. Again, herbally medicated is the way to go. A mix of live film, and psychedelic animation, it was their best "production" of their careers.

Then tho, watch Live in Pompeii ('72) and the Pulse concert ('96) maybe Live in Gdańsk ('06) to get an idea of how good they are live (over 35 years). You have to know how the songs sound on the albums to really appreciate what they do live. Next would be Animals and The Wall, if you want to go forward in time, or if you want something different Meddle ('71) or even Atom Earth Mother ('70), back in time and to a more more experimental side of PF (it's a different taste so you might not like it). Be aware, the two albums you've just listen to are probably their best... but everyone has a fav PF album and it needs not to be one of their best (mine is The Wall). Some are an acquired taste you may not like them on a first listen. It's not that the music is not good, it's like with food, some may be good but harder to digest so to speak.

Shine On You Crazy Diamond is all about Pink Floyd's founding member Syd Barrett. There are two Pink Floyds really; the Syd Barrett PF and the post-Syd Barrett PF. The latter music I listen to with my eyes closed in the dark and each time I experience a movie. Syd Barrett's PF is equally beautiful but for different reasons. Give The Piper at the Gates of Dawn a try and you'll see what I mean.

Many have requested you do "Comfortably Numb" from the 1994 Pulse concert, but I would urge you to do the studio version *first* to fully appreciate the lyrics. Then I believe you will appreciate the incredible live performance even more. "Comfortably Numb" is from "The Wall" double album, considered the greatest concept album ever recorded, and is their darkest and most powerful album. It was even adapted into a full-length feature film in 1983 and played in theaters throughout the country. While Floyd does not appear in the movie, their music plays throughout with little or no dialogue. Just a visual interpretation (live and animated) of the incredible music.

no other Band can compare with Pink Floydm they are the untouchable Masters of Music, Emotion and Experience. Only Cassic Musi from J.-S. Bach or L. v. Beethoven are on the same Level. Pink Floyd is the greatest Band of all time. Greetings from Germany

This is why we took acid and sat around and listened to PINK FLOYD for hours! I saw them twice, once when Roger Waters was still in the band and once after he left. Then I saw Roger Waters on his solo tour. The music, the lasers, the production and knowing that half the crowd was trippin' like I was is indescribable! Acid in the '80s wasn't near as good as what we had in the '60s & '70s but if you took 2 tabs it was all good!🤯🤣❤️✌️

This album was dedicated to their first singer Syd Barrett. Shine on you crazy diamond is about his downward spiral with drugs, mental health and fame... In the end it destroyed him but his creations were in a league of their own.
