Saanen 1980 - Question #1 from Question & Answer Meeting #2
'I work as a teacher and I am in constant conflict with the system of the school and the pattern of society. Must I give up all work? What is the right way to earn a living? Is there a way of living that does not perpetuate conflict?'
This channel is managed by the Krishnamurti Foundation Trust, UK, and by the Krishnamurti Foundation of America.
The role of the foundations was described by Krishnamurti when he said, 'The foundations will see to it that these teachings are kept whole, are not distorted, are not made corrupt. They will not give rise to any sectarian spirit in their activities... nor create any kind of place of worship around the teachings or the person.'
We maintain extensive archives of Krishnamurti's original works and all four Krishnamurti foundations are actively engaged in the publication of material in various forms.
Our videos contain thousands of subtitles in more than 25 languages, translated by volunteers from all over the world. If you would like to help us with translating subtitles, please contact us at digital@kfoundation.org

've been asking myself this question .. I was working as an computer engineer .. found myself being a part of a huge industrial system .. my work of no human value .. my spirit dead .. it's all about money .. I was selling my life to job, money, going after sensual pleasure during free time .. now I grow trees, take care of a personal garden .. being close to the sun, the wind, the earth .. try to take care of my needs not using much money .. I feel connected to real life .. and still contemplating about right livelihood ..

I feel like it is not the profession that makes one dead rather when we are engaged with work that we are naturally not interested in ,put lot of effort even though our heart and mind denies it. Perhaps there are people who are naturally interested in technical field , loves to code and do their work maybe it is for them but it is not for someone who wants to be a farmer , a dancer , cook , singer etc . I am on the same boat , my heart denies the work I do but I am pulling myself till I become financially independent, maybe it is an illusion but I don’t have gut to quit and take a chance.

I see numerous comments about people quitting their corporate jobs in pursuit of spirituality. The key here is to remember job is just a function, Krishnamurti’s teaching is on a deeper level and talks more about the ego’s attachment to things and its useless commentary. It is important to not let the ego slip through the back and convince yourself that you must quit your job and do something else to be more “spiritual.” If it is out of true awareness, then it can be powerful and help you do something more meaningful. If it is out of ego, even after you quit the job you may notice a new pattern of useless thinking and commentary about the new job or life you are leading. My recommendation is to accept whatever happens as it is with no conflict. When needed, take the appropriate actions by dealing with only facts (not judgements or attachments) as mentioned in this video. The teaching is simple at its core until you overthink about it. Wish you all peace :)

I disagree. He says that it is absurd to live in this type of relationship. You say job is only a function; this doesn t mean anything in my opinion; you seem to escape from reality as the ostrich with its head in the sand. Right action should always be. Not outside a so called function as a job. Friendly speaking.

Life is relationship. Can we let go of attachment? The moment I have created the opposite, conflict comes into being. This is what our education has educated the brain to do. (Analyse). By observing (without analysing) and remain with "what is", the struggle between the opposites is eliminated. This is the route to living without conflict.

"Work is love made visible. And if you cannot work with love but only with distaste, it is better that you should leave your work and sit at the gate of the temple and take alms of those who work with joy. For if you bake bread with indifference, you bake a bitter bread that feeds but half man's hunger." ~ Khalil Gibran.

It is very hard for lot of people to taking alms without getting feeling of offended and inferior. Now Indian Hindu culture has hugely influenced by colonial Christianity and has lost its real meaning in many traditions and culture.

the situations we live in is a projection of what we are inside. if you know this. You will not think that your work generates conflict because the conflict is actually already within you. You are the conflict your entire self is conflict and that situation appeared in your life just for you to realize that internal conflict that already existed. If there is conflict within you, you will attract situations that show you that conflict so that you learn something from yourself. The same happens with fear, anger, sadness, emptiness. so on and so on….that is why is important to observe ourself during the day every minute every second .

40:33 where Krishnamurti asks if working out of memory is action or not. 41:15 where JK says tha action can only be when there is complete freedom from the past and the present. 41:54 where JK says that understanding right action and right relationship brings about intelligence. And that intelligence will dictate what you do to earn your livelihood. And without that intelligence , our livelihood will be dictated by circumstances like status, money and all that.

One avoids conflict, when one has no conflict in oneself, with oneself, no self. I am a teacher, I teach languages. I have taught at university and now fugitives, because I get more money. But I have the same pleasure to do it with students or people, who have never been at school in their home country. This has evolved gradually because I have learned all the time too. So now, there are always some petty conflicts within my groups at the beginning, but they, disappear very fast. I may say, we learn together without conflict and I love my job. But it was a long way for me and J. K. has taught me so much. Namaste

dear camelia, if i may, just follow your breath, no matter where you are, what you are doing, keep your attention on your breath. breath is the vehilcle of consciousness. breath is that brings us into this body and then takes us out of it. breath is the most direct way of everything. i say this because as many books as i read in order to "intellectually" understand chakras and stuff, the days i kept my attention on breath, this state of no mind was more frequent and epiphanies came randomly all the time, like the huge realizations you're talking about. if you want, you could do a vipassana retreat to get started on it. that's how it started for me. breath took me past attention to awareness.

Interesting, the opposite of attachment is not detachment. The understanding of attachment will wither away the very attachment you have, to someone or an idea or concept. Understanding something (attachment/lonliness/envy/anger/conflict or etc) brings about the intelligence and that intelligence will tell you what the right living is, or right relationship is. We don't have to ask this to another person or a guru. The answer to those questions should come from within, from understanding. JK puts it nicely :)

The only right profession is that of farmer. A farmer deals with life processes all the time & seeks to intensify it .all other professions arise out of corruption of humanity.

dharma shektar People need clothes, places to live, food and other things need to be transported, roads have to be made to transport the food, equipment to make this needs an industry. Farmers need equipment, Many industries are necesary so society can function.

Remember the wisdom of Krishnamurti, true intelligence does not accept nor reject anything, just observes to see beyond. In the moment you state a critic such as "this is good, that is bad" you just fall prey of thought, which actually is the source of human corruption. Don't let your mind degrade in a mere ideological stance!

Earning living rightly and without any inner conflict or struggle - how? Living rightly is about right action, then what it it? Life is action, life is also relationship, so need to find both. Right relationship. Enquire into great dependence on each other, psychologically. Why we are so dependent? Is it bcoz we re so lonely? Dependence gives u security and protection. In love, being possessed and to possess, so conflict. We create image about each other and cling to that. The moment you tied to anyone, u r dependent and then corruption begins. Can we live together without being tied, or dependent psychologically on each other? Consequenes of attachment, relaise and just let it go. Can attachment ends, do not pursue detachment. That is different. Just let go attachment, be on that front, don’t try to go to opposite. eg. His son is dead, he is attached to son, he is in tears, and then try to go away to other activities for filing the void. But It is not. If he be with that completely, understand what was the attachment and dependency, then he can go into it fully and then can go beyond it. Right relationship can exist only if there is no attachment, no dependency, no image about each other, then real communion with each other. And right action is right under all circumstances. Action based on ideals, values, experiences or whatever I want to do. All that is past or attractive future, means past/future is dictation your present actions. But is that action? Question that. Right action is when there is complete freedom from past and future. Action without motives, not directed. Right action and right relationship, understanding of it will bring right intelligence, not intellect, but profound intelligence, And that intelligence will guide what is right way to earn livelihood. It demands a great deal of self inquiry. Dining every form of experience in that enquiry. Then there is way, without conflict, with intelligence, which shows right way to earn livelihood.

Dependence gives a sense of security a protection against this vast world of terror. We create image about each other and cling to that image. The moment you tied to an idea, thought or concept corruption has begun. Can we observe without any motive consequences of attachment.

Doubt and inquiry is healthy! I believe truth is to be discovered when we doubt and investigate. What I love about his discourse is how neutral he is and he breaks down the process of the way we think and feel step by step in a very clear, clinical way. I also like how he impart his insights through dialogue with scholars and his audience.

your mind creates an identity that solely depends on other. They give you a name , they give a profession , they give you *The existence* causing you to be dependent on to them. And your world and imagination takes shapes according to your perception. Shed the *I* and dilute yourself from the duality thus there is no possibility of conflict and sail through the grand Ocean without deviating from the real purpose of life. Nothing to loose, nothing too gain.we came empty handed we go empty handed. Then why not walk freely without the feel of attachment. A man with less *POSSESSION* has the most possibility of being Liberated.

So when I remain with 'what is' then I can go into it fully, completely and go beyond it. 33:36 Action can be when there is complete freedom from the past and the future ... which is not based on motive... not committed (to the culture or any concept). ...but that profound intelligence which is not yours or mine and that intelligence will dictate what you will do to earn a livelihood. Without that intelligence your livelihood will be dictated by circumstances. When there is that intelligence you maybe a gardener or cook or something, it doesn't matter.
