Nice little adventure, Kyle.... Bush-whacking can get interesting, didn't look too bad, but vid can be deceiving for sure! At least it was on the east side, which usually means less brush... Thanks for posting!

6:50 PM PST Saturday September 18th 2021 Pasadena California Awesome video. The fire might have been the same fire that I saw when I got through Knives Edge then ascending north from Chinook Pass I could see the smoke blowing south to south west t When I went through Knives Edge I was fortunate to stage the morning ascent up old snowy from Cispus pass When I got up to the Old Snowy trail head about 8:30 AM the smoke and clouds where settled and I was up above the line of sight with beautiful views of Mount Adams and Mount Rainer including views of Mount Saint Helens.. Your video was beautiful depicting the rugged views of the "Gap" area. Your information will help others who might be researching the conditions of the "Gap" area of Mount Adams. I am very glad you got to finish the entire 40 miles ..thank you - rebo

Great video, thank you! It's my understanding that a good portion of the east side crosses Yakima tribal land. I see on other forums that they have often denied requests to cross their land. I am interested in this route but want to be respectful. Can you tell us about you know about this issue? Thanks!

That’s correct, for the east side section known as The Gap (Hellroaring Meadows to Devils Garden ish), you’ll be on Yakima Nation tribal land. You can go to their website and try to get a permit. I was able to talk to them and get one but I’ve seen that doesn’t always work out that way.

@@RadishUprooted Were you able to talk to them by just applying for the permit? Hoping to do the hike later this summer and curious what the best way to get in contact/secure permission is

I don’t recall the details exactly, but I believe I applied for a permit and then reached out directly to them to follow up. I know their system has been a bit strange since Covid.

Thank you for sharing this. The Gap does look manageable. For years I was trying to figure out the most efficient way to do this trail without doing "the Gap" but thanks to this video I think my buddies and I are going to try. After route planning of course. time What time of the year did you complete The Gap?

Heck yeah enjoy. I hiked through The Gap in late August. Just make sure to acquire the appropriate permits.

Great Vid! I did Adams a couple of times last year and both times I was keen to come back to circumnavigate. From your video it looks plentiful, but how’s water access on this route? Pretty regular access it seems?

Thanks! Water was pretty regular on the route, though a bit scarce on the north east face around Devils Garden. Highly recommend this circumnavigation, but the Gap is no joke!

Sadly my Gaia library got wiped a few months back. I’m happy to give you any navigation advice if you’ve got specific questions! It’s a pretty straightforward route, though very tedious and with some sketchy obstacles. Feel free to shoot me an email with any questions: kgersman@gmail.com. Good luck!

My friends and I just completed the exact same route form 9-10 to 9-14. the "Gap" is no joke, wish I had crampons on that glacier descent. What dates did you start?
@RadishUprooted

We went Aug 23-26! There was so much rock fall on the glacier that I didn’t even realize I was on a glacier until half way down when giant cravasses started opening up all around us😂

Did you have to get a permit from the Yakima Indian Reservation to hike the east side?

How’d you score permission to cross native land? I thought the reason there is no trail is because hikers aren’t allowed there.

The reason there’s no trail on the East side is because the terrain can’t support one that could be reasonably maintained. But that’s also correct, for the east side section known as The Gap (Hellroaring Meadows to Devils Garden ish), you’ll be on Yakima Nation tribal land.
