I never realized how dangerous this job was. I knew that it was risky and workers could be hurt but certainly didn’t realize how life threatening it can be. I have tree trimmers come about yearly to trim my palm trees and every few years they come for our juniper trees. I always had great respect for them but this certainly gives me an even greater respect.

I had no idea that the fronds could form a skirt that can break loose, but still hold together and slide down. On another video of the incident a commenter said to not skimp on money or bids and try to trim palms from below because this can happen. Sad to see a working man lose his life trying to earn a living. My condolences to his loved ones.

Yes, it seems like every year people die from this same thing happening. The problem is that once a palm trees get super tall, it gets rather expensive to maintain it. So, instead of people folking over money every year, they put it on hold and they let the tree get "bushy" and dry. Then when a trimmer goes up there and they start at the bottoom, the triming rattles the dry skirt and the dry heavy skirt falls on top of the worker and kills him because no one is going to rescue the worker, except the fire department. This is nothing new in Southern California. It takes a brave person to put their life on the line for an occupation like this one. Personally, I am not a fan of palm trees and have cut everyone of them on my property. However, the neighbors have palms that sprout onto my property. Ugh!

Harness type also plays a huge part in survival of people. If you’re sitting on the harness for an extended period of time, blood flow is restricted around crotch/leg area and you will pass out. Once you’re passed out, you won’t even realize it but you’re knocking on deaths door. They sell special harness where you can throw a line down in an emergency and stand on it, to keep blow flow flowing as long as possible before getting rescued. They even have some that can descend down a few feet.

@midnyte_ryder
@midnyte_ryder 2 ай бұрын
We have little rolls of straps hanging on our harnesses for just this. It’s to relieve static tension and allow blood to circulate. The problem is the blood becomes toxic in the trapped area and when it gets released it basically poisons your blood and you don’t make it. Only way to save that after a while is to put a tourniquet on your legs and then you will end up losing them. But usually once they release you it’s not feasible for that. Bad news
@TenMinuteTrips
@TenMinuteTrips 2 ай бұрын
@@jsmith123 What’s a “climbing harness?” Does it magically help to defy gravity and help people scale shear cliffs? Let me help. Tree trimming by licensed, bonded and insured tree trimming businesses are subject to OSHA regulations. Since this happened in Kern County, CA, I can assure you that CAL-OSHA regulations exceed those of federal OSHA standards. Fall protection is the point of the harness, not the climbing up the tree. The OP correctly pointed out that if the fall victim is dangling in the harness and is not rescued within five minutes, his blood circulation will be cut off. The result will be a fatality. I’m fairly certain that that’s what happened here.

@ Marquis family. That's why I still run from 40 years ago the same type of saddle. Floating seat strap with double flapping D's and two fixed D's.. It's just comfortable. Once in a while the leg strap does help such as when climbing out or I should say walking out on the side lateral sideways.. I have some nice harnesses for myself that even have a battened seat which would probably work if I ever use them lol lol.. There's a saying"if it's not broken why fix it" That is usually mostly true.. So sad about this young fellow.. All for taking care of his family or himself....😢

The worst I've seen was our neighbors palm tree. It was so overgrown it hardly even looked like a palm tree. There were probably 20 or so squirrels and likely lots of rats living under those dead leaves. They ended up chopping it down, all the squirrels scattered. The population of squirrels dramatically decreased after the tree was chopped down. It was as tall as this one too! 😳

Maybe we should start regulating/enforcing routine tree trimmings by homeowners. In my area, fire department started doing somethign to that effect, but it was for fire risk reduction. But for areas where fire risk isn't a concern, maybe they can still mandate routine trimmings. In severe winds, tall trees can be a risk to your neighbors too. Just no good reason to let a tree get out of control outside of pure laziness and negligence by the homeowner.

The Bakersfield citizens who don’t have palm trees probably don’t want to pay taxes for the inspection/notification/enforcement needed to regulate those who do have the palms. Staff, administration, documentation, court hearings, etc. it would require a significant ‘bureaucracy’ and still people would resist and object and drag their feet.

because it's dangerous to leave it there and if anything happens and someone gets hurt, then if it's found it SHOULD HAVE been taken care of but wasn't, you as the irresponsible owner are now financially liable for everything according to law, don't have plants you won't manage unless it's something that doesn't need much managing

I have no words, but some of genuine anger for the way many people all over our country having to do these hard jobs with very little money, while some prefer to dance like Ducks on stages all over our states playing the very same Trumpet sounds mocking the immigrants doing these types of work.

Those palm trees are really dangerous to trim. The best most safest way cut those are by starting by the very top. And cutting your way downward. Not from the bottom underneath upward. Those limbs are extremely heavy. Its like impossible to cut threw them. When you want certain trees cut in around your property. And you hear the price from the labor worker to do the work. And you say to yourself uh no to expensive. Now you understand why.

I remember when I was looking for a new career...I met a young kid that was so enthusiastic about his job. He was an expert climber and was using that skill to trim trees around high power lines. I remember how much he loved his job earning a meager $16 an hour. I respected him for his fearless pursuit, but also felt sorry for him and I think his innocence and ignorance put him in harms way. I still wonder how his life turned out.

This is part of the reason harnesses have been redesigned. In the old days you just had a harness that would go around the thighs. The problem was when an individual was suspended for any amount of time their arterial flow would be cut off in their legs and blood flow would cease. New harnesses have step loops that the wearer can put their feet into in order to lift themselves up and release the stress around their thighs. I'm sure all of this wouldn't have mattered though for this poor man. It appeared that both of his arms are broken, I'm guessing he was crushed.

How exactly did he die? Suffocation, a frond severing his artery, heart attack, or ?

The palm fonds made his body bend when they fell on top of him, Pinning him down against the tree so most likely suffocation.

I was watching a different video of the recovery…and trying to understand how that happened! This report mentioned the palm fronds are on a skirt, so I guess one slipped down on him crushing him. Maybe it was mechanical asphyxiation. Very sad and tragic for his family 🥺🙏🏻

When we bought our home over 9 years ago, we had 2 palm trees in our backyard. The grow these things, not sure what its called, but looks like a huge banana. Some weigh 25-30 lbs. The palm trees were about 10 ft from our back door. I told my wife, that those would be so dangerous. It cpukd fall on someone, our house, dogs, etc. First thing we did is cut those 2 palm trees and that was the end of that. So sorry that this man passed away trying to make an honest living. I see a lot of comments about the proper way to cut down a palm tree. Sometimes, people dont think about that. They think about providing for their families and they risk their life. May he rest in eternal peace.

That was completely unnecessary for that man to lose his life. His boss could have rented an 85 ft boom lift and all that work could have been done from outside not underneath. So was a man's life worth a few hundred dollars you saved😢
