I never realized how dangerous this job was. I knew that it was risky and workers could be hurt but certainly didn’t realize how life threatening it can be. I have tree trimmers come about yearly to trim my palm trees and every few years they come for our juniper trees. I always had great respect for them but this certainly gives me an even greater respect.

Yes, it seems like every year people die from this same thing happening. The problem is that once a palm trees get super tall, it gets rather expensive to maintain it. So, instead of people folking over money every year, they put it on hold and they let the tree get "bushy" and dry. Then when a trimmer goes up there and they start at the bottoom, the triming rattles the dry skirt and the dry heavy skirt falls on top of the worker and kills him because no one is going to rescue the worker, except the fire department. This is nothing new in Southern California. It takes a brave person to put their life on the line for an occupation like this one. Personally, I am not a fan of palm trees and have cut everyone of them on my property. However, the neighbors have palms that sprout onto my property. Ugh!

Harness type also plays a huge part in survival of people. If you’re sitting on the harness for an extended period of time, blood flow is restricted around crotch/leg area and you will pass out. Once you’re passed out, you won’t even realize it but you’re knocking on deaths door. They sell special harness where you can throw a line down in an emergency and stand on it, to keep blow flow flowing as long as possible before getting rescued. They even have some that can descend down a few feet.

We have little rolls of straps hanging on our harnesses for just this. It’s to relieve static tension and allow blood to circulate. The problem is the blood becomes toxic in the trapped area and when it gets released it basically poisons your blood and you don’t make it. Only way to save that after a while is to put a tourniquet on your legs and then you will end up losing them. But usually once they release you it’s not feasible for that. Bad news
@TenMinuteTrips2 ай бұрын
@@jsmith123 What’s a “climbing harness?” Does it magically help to defy gravity and help people scale shear cliffs? Let me help. Tree trimming by licensed, bonded and insured tree trimming businesses are subject to OSHA regulations. Since this happened in Kern County, CA, I can assure you that CAL-OSHA regulations exceed those of federal OSHA standards. Fall protection is the point of the harness, not the climbing up the tree. The OP correctly pointed out that if the fall victim is dangling in the harness and is not rescued within five minutes, his blood circulation will be cut off. The result will be a fatality. I’m fairly certain that that’s what happened here.

Maybe we should start regulating/enforcing routine tree trimmings by homeowners. In my area, fire department started doing somethign to that effect, but it was for fire risk reduction. But for areas where fire risk isn't a concern, maybe they can still mandate routine trimmings. In severe winds, tall trees can be a risk to your neighbors too. This is part of the reason harnesses have been redesigned. In the old days you just had a harness that would go around the thighs. The problem was when an individual was suspended for any amount of time their arterial flow would be cut off in their legs and blood flow would cease. New harnesses have step loops that the wearer can put their feet into in order to lift themselves up and release the stress around their thighs. I'm sure all of this wouldn't have mattered though for this poor man. It appeared that both of his arms are broken, I'm guessing he was crushed.

Being too tight to cut it every year and then hiring someone cheap to cut it after years of neglect. They should be sued.

I had no clue that could even happen. Wow. My condolences to the gentleman's family.

How exactly did he die? Suffocation, a frond severing his artery, heart attack, or ?
@Daniel2faded-r1bАй бұрын
The palm fonds made his body bend when they fell on top of him, Pinning him down against the tree so most likely suffocation.

I was watching a different video of the recovery…and trying to understand how that happened! This report mentioned the palm fronds are on a skirt, so I guess one slipped down on him crushing him. Maybe it was mechanical asphyxiation. Very sad and tragic for his family 🥺🙏🏻

When we bought our home over 9 years ago, we had 2 palm trees in our backyard. The grow these things, not sure what its called, but looks like a huge banana. Some weigh 25-30 lbs. The palm trees were about 10 ft from our back door. I told my wife, that those would be so dangerous. It cpukd fall on someone, our house, dogs, etc. First thing we did is cut those 2 palm trees and that was the end of that. So sorry that this man passed away trying to make an honest living. I see a lot of comments about the proper way to cut down a palm tree. Sometimes, people dont think about that. They think about providing for their families and they risk their life. May he rest in eternal peace.

There is a reason why there is a license requirements for tree trimming. Saw this about 20 years ago in Compton, same results.

Tree trimming sucks and the pay sucks

This is why it is THE most dangerous job. Don't hire just anyone to perform a complex job like this. ISA Certified Tree Worker, ISA Certified Arborist are a must.

This is why you should maintain your palm trees and have the skirts trimmed frequently... Not only is it dangerous, it can harbor bugs and other pests like pigeons.

That was completely unnecessary for that man to lose his life. His boss could have rented an 85 ft boom lift and all that work could have been done from outside not underneath. So was a man's life worth a few hundred dollars you saved😢
