Searching for MONSTERS with an Underwater Fishing drone, as well as planes, oil rigs, cars and much more. Join us for a dive exploring this fascinating place from a really unique perspective. I love all kinds of fishing, but I've always wanted to see more of what goes on beneath the surface. In here we have a chance to see carp, perch, trout, roach, pike and even 6 foot long prehistoric sturgeon! This is mostly a practice first run out with this new bit of equipment, and I've got some really exciting plans lined up for 2025 including mountain lake filming and much more!

A big thanks for David Gwyre from Wild Eye Films who let me borrow some of his footage, so I could set the scene about the location and show you some of the fish we were trying to seek out! You can find his channel here, if you're into underwater footage then make sure you subscribe! / @mrcambs1

My grandfather was a member of Torrisholme (Morecambe) Masonic Lodge. He brought home an old book from the Masonic library which I read as a ten year old. It spoke of a series of caves in Capernwray which were a major tourist attraction in Victorian times.People arrived in coaches from far and wide to explore the huge caverns. Naturally I looked far and wide since we lived nearby, but I never found them. This was in the sixties. But there was Jackdaw Quarry, a long abandoned working in which we often played, which had a deep pool at one end. Eventually I put two and two together as I saw the development of the diving school and realised that they had tapped into the old cave system. The book said it was very interesting and extensive, how much of it was destroyed by the Quarry I can't say. It was a great place to swim.

That’s really cool to hear, so you think the cave system existed where the quarry was dug? Seems an unusual decision to destroy a tourist attraction, there’s no shortage of limestone around here
@kerryburns-k8i
@kerryburns-k8i 2 ай бұрын
@@adventurefishinguk I first went there in the early Sixties, the ground level was roughly where the water level is now, and it was densely covered in young trees maybe ten or fifteen years old. I suppose the proximity to the M6, which was extended around that time, explains the reopening of the quarry, which was then dug much deeper. I got the impression from the book that this was a cave system you could walk into in everyday clothes. Obviously the initial quarrying was very extensive and way before the M6, so perhaps it was providing building stone or quicklime although I saw no evidence of a kiln, which are common in the area. I remember hearing about a diving fatality which might indicate that it is more than just a lake, perhaps some of the cave is still accessible from beneath the surface, which would add a great deal to the attraction. Cave diving is very popular in the area. The river Keer rises in Swarthdale (valley of the Swarth ?) runs into a reservoir above Over Kellet, and down through Kellet Park woods very near to Jackdaw Quarry reaching the sea near Carnforth, it's a bit far fetched but could that account for the fish ? I don't know if it was an attraction before or after the initial quarrying. I live in the south of Spain now, so thanks for bringing back some childhood memories.

The masonry lodge isn’t as simple as we think. I’m sure they allowed for the quarry to be dug in order to either destroy or retrieve something very important or even keep hiding it under water after completing the digging of caves and the only way to access it is through a secret cave entrance

What I really enjoyed about this is how it confirms something I recently noticed. I have been experimenting with basic underwater cameras while fishing. I have been quite surprised by how few fish I see even on waters I know to be well stocked. This tells me fish are very transient, moving around a lot like grazing cattle around a field. The struggle you had initially to find them confirms this ... we know this in fishing right ? that you need to find them or wait for them to find you. But, it never really hit home as much as when you film it, I have sat a camera in a known hot spot for hours and not seen a fish at all. Not even shoals of tiny Perch. So next time you cant get a bite, don't always assume they are there and you just need another bait or need to feed to get them going, more often they are just somewhere else. Wouldn't mind an idea , just roughly of the cost of the drone .. ??? what should one budget for?

Very good point! I suppose it depends a lot on the time of year where the fish are and probably how they're feeling that day which makes it hard when underwater filming! And it wasn't cheap, have a shop around there are different prices on different sites. Thanks for watching!

@@BackRoadBeast9R The tree looked like it had a clean cut, probably cut down when the quarry was in use. reminds me of tree root stumps off iron-rich moorland; when bogtrotting, the water is preserving the hardwood, but not fossilised. It's amazing footage. 🤘

It’s shocking sturgeon and brown trout live in that quarry, and that giant Koi Carp was amazing! Very cool video and crazy piece of underwater filming technology! We have some deep quarries around my home here in Wisconsin, USA 🇺🇸 . They stock Rainbow Trout, and you can catch bass, panfish, and carp in those bodies of water. But you would never see a sturgeon in our quarries. Awesome prehistoric creatures! Good luck fishing 🎣!

I learned to dive in Capenwray when it was abandoned and undeveloped in the early 1990’s with Blackpool Area Divers. There used to be a load of dumped cars in there and the instructor would pop the boot lid and I always expected a body to fly out! But it was usually full of junk. Happy days.

I've dived Capernwray scores of times all year round and I'm a keen fisherman. As one comment said most of the fish are on the 2m and 6m platform areas. There are just a handful of Sturgeon and some very good sized Trout. There are some decent sized roach but not lots of them and sometimes in winter they just seem to disappear. The Perch are mainly small, never seen a big one, probably get eaten by the Trout which is probably what happens to any small Roach as well. Once you get out into the main body of the lake usually its just the odd stray small Perch. Most of the lake is 20m plus depth and there just aint nothing there. As you alude to I dont think there is a lot of food for them apart from small mussels which I think help to keep the clarity of the water so good. Yes I have stirred the bottom up looking for invertabrates but nothing, the little cloud of silt does attract the little Perch though.

You need a trip to Iceland to take it up to Þingvallavatn lake. It has some of the clearest water on earth as it is basically fed by glacial melt water filtered through volcanic rock. Seriously, when I was there, in the smaller pools it almost looks like thick air rather than water as it is absolutely CRYSTAL clear. And there are loads of big trout you can see just hanging out.

Good stuff, keen to see more of the underwater drone 👍 We also have a lake Windermere here in Australia, just a few hours from me, one of my favourite places to fish, with my Pop as a kid. I have to get back there one day soon and make a video....

@adventurefishinguk in lake Windermere here in Australia we catch silver perch, yellowbelly aka golden perch and one of our most iconic freshwater fish, the Murray cod... It also has a few trout in there.

@adventurefishinguk 1st aircraft 2 mins in was a HS748 ex Emerald Airways based at Liverpool, we used to carry everything from boxes of live crabs, newspqpers, air mail and even the odd repatriation of the deceased in a coffin.. prior to that it was a passenger aircraft... quite a chequered history of incidents in its previous life, aircraft reg is or was G-BVOV
