Javier Mendez has a lot of humility. He's a striking coach, but he respects Abdulmanap's work with Khabib and his brothers a lot and doesn't try to change their game plan, but instead sharpens them to better implement their wrestling heavy pressure.

MMA striking is different than Boxing or Muay Thai. Too many people think MMA striking is suppose to look like Boxing or MT, so they label it as "bad" striking, but no, that's actually what striking is suppose to look like in MMA to be effective (for a wrestler at least)

@@rijadhadzic3396 yup even Adesenya who is at least top 3 strikers in the UFC and has a nice style to watch is still awkward to look at with the amount of feints and changing position/switiching stances that goes on. @@rijadhadzic3396 dude...there’s only good striking and bad striking. Just because an athlete trains MMA it doesn’t mean that their striking HAS to be mediocre, or the hands are kept too low most the time (way too many MMA fighters do this btw). He doesn't kick because it would be the equivalent of Adesanya shooting for takedowns against the cage. It doesn't fit into his gameplan: close the distance and get your opponent up against the cage. And even to that effect he's used the front kick at times, especially in the Gaethje fight.

What many people don't understand is that it's a question of stance / balance. Khabib is very forward leaning and marches forward to pressure with punches and takedown threats, so his balance is in front. Kickers typically have a upright stance with weight either spread on both legs or even on the back leg. Khabib's whole system is not compatible with kicking and he doesn't need to.

Great coaches make great gameplans and tailor their training to their athletes. There's a lot of talk on this thread as to whether kicks work or not. THEY OBVIOUSLY DO. They just wouldn't work for khabib. He should have to know how to deal with them. But a fighter only has limited time during a training camp. And that should be spent honing your a game and b game. and focusing on your opponents a game and b game. He could maybe learn to do a tornado kick when he isn't booked for a fight, to maybe break the monotony of training, but maintain good gym habits in the off season. Which is what I here a lot of guys do. but even this could be seen as a waste of time.

I like Charles Oliveiras style so much cause he throw all kinds of kicks and if someone grabs his leg and takes him down then he can just submit them. Basically he can kick without worrying about people catching his kicks. That's why he does alot of jumping teeps and front kicks. I'm surprised it isn't similar for khabib. I know wrestling and BJJ are different but still most people probably wouldn't grab his legs to take him down cause he will just reverse position and be in top.

Khabib's best weapon is his punishing fence wrestling, and throwing many kicks or getting taken down doesn't help, the feet being ready to shoot helps. From the little I've seen, he has a solid bottom game (see vs. Trujillo) and middling kicks (skillset way below Aldo, Gaethje, Adesanya). I don't doubt he kicks hard but Mendez knows not to compromise top-tier wrestling for mid-tier kicking.

Kahbib never needed a different game plan, he would walk guys down and over power then, wrestle them to the mat, hold them there, and beat them period. Everyone knew his game plan noone could stop it. Kahbib would be talking and refusing water while guys were gasping for air lol

Another thing about kicks is that they're the most effective when you're at a distance that you wouldn't want to be in if you also want to shoot for a takedown. GSP was unique because his takedowns were so fast that he could open you up with a kick and still have the time to take you down before you have the chance to recover to a normal stance.

More effective with two good legs than a good leg and a bruised up one, however some kicks can be extremely effective. Now look at the Connor fight where he rolled his leg and re injured his leg that was do to a previous leg injury? I have to give it too all these guys what amazing athletes and a extremely tough sport!!!! Not only they all get shitty pay to start the amount of personal injury is insane!

Talk about abusing the word "expose" xD Think if khabib mastered the calf or low kick, it would definitely add to his arsenal. But I understand why his coach let's him stuck to punching, takedowns, control and ground and pound. Don't change a winning formula.
@nwilt7114

You should still practice kicks, however, kicks are high risk high reward. If you can land them cleanly you can do a lot of damage on your opponent. If you can't against an opponent, you expose yourself (against a gap closer) for takedowns and risk damaging your foot/leg. You usually have to set it up when they aren't expecting it (time it just right), throw some (calf kicks) if they are over exposed, or have a strategy like a kick boxer that keeps the distance perfect for kicking (If kicking is your specialty).

@@ModalGroove Most of it has to do with the fear of being taken down by Khabib though. If Gaethje, Conor, and Dustin didn't have to worry about being taken down by the most dominant grappler in the sport, I believe he would've been destroyed on the feet.

I can't imagine him doing teep and front kicks cause I think it just wouldn't be fast enough to be that effective. That's why he does a flying knee sometimes. You don't expect a wrestler tokick because they know it won't work but ain't nobody expecting a wrestler to be coming at you forward with a flying knee 😂
