Khamzat needs to win in the first or second round. If not, he will get finished in the later rounds. If Kamaru had two more rounds, he would have finished him. Khamzat is the best 1st round fighter in the UFC, but after that he goes down and down...

Biggest test of his career
@JoeSmith-we3jw2 ай бұрын
@ShakMMA He's the best fighter he's faced, but Burns was a really tough test since he then was a lot less experienced, and he was hesitant to implement his normal wrestling game plan because of Burns BJJ. His coaches wanted him to avoid the ground at all and just focus on jabs and straight punches. So he had to try to go from just dominating lower ranked fighters with grappling to beat a top 3 fighter on the feet, back when his stand up was really untested. Usman was also on paper a really tough match-up due to his cardio and elite takedown defense, short notice or not. Now, with him having the extra experience and confidence of 10-8ing Usman in the 1st round, I can see why he doesn't see Rob as a tougher test, even though Rob obviously is a better striker.

His cardio is very underrated. He won round 3 against Burns and increased the output each round. Against Usman, he slowed down but still had success with taking down and controlling Usman in the later rounds. Not an easy thing to do. Keep in mind that he's been putting up a crazy pace in round 1, so it's not like his opponents have been able to just dominate him in the later rounds since they have had to spend a ton of energy to just survive the frantic 1st round.

One can always give a more thoughtful answer to a question if they choose. I asked Kayla a similar question about why Julianna got the title shot over her, and Kayla expressed that Dana had promised Julianna the title shot and was sticking to it. Similarly, Khamzat could have opened up more about his frustrations/feelings about illness/inactivity. He could have shared analysis about DDP vs. Strickland. He could have reflected on what skills he needed to improve after going to a majority decision with Usman. He chose not to. Maybe he wasn't in the mood, maybe it's a confidence issue expressing thoughts in English, maybe he wants to keep things close to his chest. His right and I don't mind at all. Just to reinforce, a good interview requires both sides to participate. I'm always happy to take in feedback if people would like to pitch alternate questions/framing of questions for me to consider reflecting on though :)
