Loved the history lesson at the end! Please do more of those! As a resident of the green and pleasant land I would like to add that the printing press still hasn't completely ruined the diversity of the English Language/Languages. Even though England is just a small island off the coast of France, as you travel around you do hear some interesting regional variation still. Like using "sen" instead of self ("How can ye live with ye sen?") or "Nowt" instead of nothing. And that's without travelling north of the wall to attempt communication with the famously incomprehensible Scottish.

@МарияСмык-ж5б5 жыл бұрын
Well, this anecdote by Caxton is an exaggeration: in fact if we read more texts of that period we will see that both eggs and eyeren were used in the same parts of the country. This anecdote appeared because people started to pay attention to the variations of this kind -- that was the first step to the normalization of the language. Before that the English language mainly was used only within a concrete dialect, while the language of so to say the national communication was French (I mean the Middle English Period before the XIV-XV centuries approximately). And also 1490 is already Early Modern English according to the traditional classification (VII century-1066 Old English, 1066-1476 Middle English, 1476-1700 Early Modern English, from 1700 up to now -- Modern English). P. S. I studied the history of the English language in my university, and my master dissertation is devoted to it, so I do know what I'm talking about)

What about man, the plural of that would be men. Would this not come under same category as "Children"?
@Pagan_0210 Жыл бұрын
*Language nerd alert* Man→men is one of the words that used to be made plural with something called "umlaut" (basically a sound change that happened in languages Germanic languages like English, German, Scandinavian languages etc. where the sounds /a/ /o/ and /u/ changed when there was an i or the y /j/ (like in "Yes") was in the next syllable. In proto Germanic it used to be "*mannaz" and "manniz" which turned into manna and manni and eventually mann and menn in Old English). In English umlaut worked by turning "u" into "i" and "a"&"o" into "e", Another example could be goose becoming geese or how Old English plural of "mūs" was "mīs" which because modern "mouse" and "mice". Meanwhile the -en suffix in words like ox→oxen was from what I remember because Old English used to have grammatical gender like many others European languages. But the plural of child wasn't always children, it was actually "childer" (again, weird Old English grammatical gender shenanigans). But back in the day some people felt it wasn't enough en intentionally added another plural to it with the -en suffix. Making childer into children. Same thing happened with brother, which used to have the plural brether but it got the same treatment and now besides the word "brothers" made by people who probably got sick of all the irregularities we also have the word "brethren", like "The Brethren court" in Pirates of the Carribean. (Wow this comment got VERY long sorry about that)
