Basically in Russian all words have multiple forms like "who" and "whom". For example (the word father): My father is an engineer / I'll see my father. In the first sentence u need to say "отец", but in the second example you have to say "отца". And you have to do this to basically every noun, pronoun, adjective, gerund and so on. The most difficult part is that there're more than just two cases for each word and in most cases there are no universal rules for word formation. 👍

3:18 I definitely could be wrong but I think "whom are you talking to?" is incorrect grammar since you can't end a sentence with a preposition. It should be "To whom are you talking". That being said even if "to whom" is technically the correct way to say it, in everyday colloquial English it might sound weird to talk so formally.
@CookieJar20255 жыл бұрын
This is so funny, because if you look at some other grammar videos in the Khan Academy website. In one of those videos David himself debunked how you CAN end a sentence with a preposition, and this is just something made up. A rumor basically but not really. I'll leave you a link kzbin.info/www/bejne/hJmqgoygjbKaqbs (Please do not quote me or fight me because I was not the one to debunk it. David did)

My whole I've been speaking English and I have a fairly robust vocabulary, however I've never mastered this word. It just goes to show it can take a lifetime to fully master English, its vast lexicon and many tricky rules. ❎️ Who are you talking to? ✅️ To whom are you talking? In the example above, "who are you talking to" is incorrect bc the pronoun _whom_ should be used. Also, the sentence ends with a preposition. _To_ should occur at the beginning of the sentence rather than at the end

probably just me but I'm alsost none the wiser for watching this. I've understood a little bit about a Subject and Object of a sentence, but without more examples, or a deeper breakdown I feel like this is grazing the surface. I can't construct a sentence anew and work out if I'm using who in an Object or Subject sense, I just have never thought about English and using words or sentence structure in such a way. It's almost like we just say the words and people take their best guess at the meaning, these rules seem alien.
