It's a little confusion to say there is nothing at the Nodes of Ranvier because there's a high density of voltage gated ion channels there allowing the signal to continue through the myelin insulation.
@matthewetheridge8583
@matthewetheridge8583 4 жыл бұрын
Exactly, the Nodes of Ranvier are super important because it's the only way the signal "jumps" as the action potentials only happen there. I knew I wasn't the only one lost there.😅

Could one say that upper motor neurons directly innervate muscle fibers to cause muscle contraction and movement, or is it indirectly via the lower motor neurons?

Is the UMN the same thing as CNS and LMN the same as PNS ?
@atheerhamad1412
@atheerhamad1412 10 жыл бұрын
no it is not. the UMN and LMN are merely tracts from CNS to the effector such as skeletal muscle but the PNS is a sepecialized system has a well defined role in rest and digestion

I thought myelin sheaths were used to make action potentials move faster, but action potentials dissipate as they move through myelinated areas. The nodes of Ranvier boost action potentials as they have voltage-gated sodium channels that open... Also, action potentials don't actually jump from node to node. They just appear to jump because they move slower at non-insulated areas...
