Rik Schoonbeek You're right - Type 1 fibers can carry sustained but small loads, whereas Type 2 fibers are only recruited at high levels of muscle force (and thus more powerful), they just can't sustain the force for long.
@robertmyatt
@robertmyatt 9 жыл бұрын
There's a very simple method to remember the difference: 1 = long duration + low power = get tired slower because of low amount of force produced. e.g. jogging. 2 = short duration + high power = get tired quicker because of high amount of force produced. e.g. sprinting.

+Guido Franzó I think red and white fibers are independent. I've been working on white for 3.5 years and when I go light for endurance it feels mad heavy. I never worked on red in those 3.5 years really. I always thought it was about going heavy then light is easy but nah. Red fibers have to be brought up with endurance starting light like doing white at the beginning. There is no avoiding it because the white fibers will always kick in making red fibers never be worked. I was wondering how the people who do ruck sacks with massive weight do it. They said they started light then upped the weight next week or back down then eventually they got to their weight. I look stupid doing light weight like it's hard. Now I'm changing up my workouts to have 5:1 light to heavy so I don't look like a total weakling. I need to catch up my red fibers but the only way is to lose all ego entirely when doing the weight. I have to really break it down to 5 lbs and endurance that for a long duration. I can do way more that weight but I'm only going to work white and that's not what I need. Getting tired all the time w/ light weight and wondering why it's hard to hold it a long time is because red fibers are bad. Working white is great because the joints, connective tissue, and bones are probably super dense and strong. People who only work white can easily rip and fracture those things.

This is a great video, but I think it's missing the differentiation between Type 2A and Type 2X. Type 2A is moderate (size) and red in color. It is resistant to fatigue but can also contract quickly if needed, and has both glycolytic (fast) and oxidative (slow) function.

Firstly, thanks for the great video! I have a question about this: You've said that type 1 muscle fibers have high strength and power, while Type 2 muscle fibers are weak. This is contrary to my understanding. My understanding is that Type 2 muscle fibers use anaerobic energy and create explosive, powerful movements (high strength and power) while type 1 muscles, relying in the slower delivery of aerobic energy, are not able to produce the same amount of power, so are relatively weak. Am I wrong, or is this a mistake in this presentation?

I have a question A teacher of mine once said that as we get older our muscles are slowly becoming "white" like "tendons" (not literally) Did he mean that when we are young we have more type 1 mucles fibers and as we get older they transform into type 2? But that does not make any sense cuz marathon runners that need endurance muscles are always older people.....i am confused can anybody explain me what happens to the mucle fibers as we get older? And if age plays a role in the concentration of type 1 muscle fibers?

Type 1 are slow twitch muscle fiber, and they are red because of the myoglobin, which is like hemoglobin, therefore oxidative, using oxygen(aerobic=with oxygen) Type 2 are fast twitch, and are white, because they don't need oxygen to use ATP, and are called anaerobic.

Thanks for your video, but I am confused. I just found two explanations where they say that "Type 2" are actually legs, back and bigger muscles, the ones you actually categorize as "Type 1" in your video (you say that Type 2 are your finger muscles). Type 2 seem to be the red ones according to two random searches on the internet (white in your video). Can you please clarify? Source here: buildingmuscle.org/muscle-fibers-explained-type-1-and-type-2/ www.quora.com/What-are-the-examples-of-type-I-and-type-II-muscle-fibres Both the above state the opposite of what you are saying. Imma be so fr rn when I say this is the most khan academy video I’ve ever seen. Bro makes every statement using the most complex words possible , this is why kids grow to hate school. Simplify things. We all know you love to sound smart. Make it understandable. I can go watch any other video on this subject and come away with a much much better understanding which is exactly what I did. There’s a difference between a great teacher and someone who loves to sound smart. One teaches and one doesn’t shut up.

this guy is total bullshit, there is 3 muscles fibers.exemple: when you do sprint 100 metres and comes back at 9 km h and do again 100 m sprint and repeat it over and over again, you will be very good at it, and so you aerobic system will be very good at doing it.but, because you use your fast muscles twitch type 3, (very fast muscles twhitch), and comes back to very low intensity (fibre 1), if you must keep a speed of 13 kmh per hour for even 6 minutes, you will not succed if your training were sprint and comes bacl with low entnsity for sprinting again...so, aerobic can need as well fast twithches muscles, this guy say only bullshit stuffs, aerobic is very wide, it can be endurance with sprints intervals or endurance whith classic intervals, thoses 2 kinds of exercises are opposite and if you work more on sprint interval, you will get better at sprint intervals while if you work more on classical intervals (12 kmh per hour 16 km h er hour for exemple), you will get better at marthon for exemple, but it doesnt mean you heart and aerobic sysem will be better since the guy which does only classic intervals will tire quicker with sprints intervals... sprint interval are aerobic too so... if you want to get better endurance at sprint intervals you need to have more very fast twitch muscles, and if you want to be better at marathon you need to have better muscles type 2 (not fast twitch muscles neither slow, it's middle).

I've done a lot of studying on this over time. Where was the talk about type 2a and type 2b? Where was the talk about the way type 2 stores glycogen, in the muscles themselves as carbs and sugar? Where was the talk that a type 2 fighter would beat the shit out of a type 1 in the first 45 secs of a fight, and a type 2b might do far worse? type 1 depends on oxidation for sure but how is that going to work when they're being destroyed and choked out in the beginning? With type 2b the energy is there waiting, in the muscle, doesn't need oxygen for a good while. Person getting ready for your MCAT, the areas of the different muscle fibers are closely proportionate. Men have a lot more area of type 2, the whiter looking fiber, women have more type 1 - muscle that depends on triglicorides and oxygen that is why it looks more red. The triglicorides stored in the fat cells in type 1 and have have to have oxygen for this movement. Type 2 is from starches and sugars our bodies store as carbs in the muscles. We call that glycogen. The byproduct of using it is your lactic/ lactate acid, that store in the muscle and it reacts right away and much stronger but can't hold out too long. That lactic acid has to drain from your body using a slow twitch (type 1) exercise. Or from a massage, it's why they give you a bottle of water. For the toxicity of lactate. Going back to what I said about the type 2 a or b, beating the shit out of the type 1, they'd have to do in those 45 secs or so before they deal with fatigue. Then it could be over. A person that cross trains mixing their muscles 1 and 2a will have the best of both worlds. Love to all! I hope my information isn't out dated, I just tried to add more clarity. Sorry for criticizing the video sir
