From Los Angeles, the open to the 3:30 Movie on KHJ-9.
Movie opens in Los Angeles didn't have the flair that the New York versions had - this being one of the notable exceptions. This is just simply a great open, great shots of a movie marquee accompanied by a fantastic disco score.
I think a number of RKO stations adopted a 3:30 or 4:30 movie after the ABC O&Os cancelled their versions, right?

That score accompanying this opening was composed by Grammy/Emmy Winning composer, Charles Fox. I recently found an LP of the Foul Play soundtrack and was shocked to hear this piece on the album.

The theatre marquee as shown on "KHJ's 3:30 Movie", is the Nuart Theatre in Los Angeles.

Also . . . from what I've read, KHJ for many, many years, used RCA TK-26 chains dating to the late 1950's or early '60's, and the screen quality of the clips of "Pat & Mike" may've attested to this. There was a difference between the replication of B&W on many different film/slide cameras used by TV stations. One can tell whether they used a TK-26 or TK-27 or TK-28, or GE PE-24/240/245, or Cohu Systems film chain.

I knew it! When I heard that track on the HBO promo for "Foul Play," I was sure it was made for that particular movie. Thanks for unveiling that info.

A couple of movie intros that DID have flair in L.A. were for "The Fabulous 52", "The Early Show"(both seen on weekends)& "The Late Show" on weeknights on KNXT in the '60's & '70's.

that music is lifted right off the Foul Play soundtrack which was 3 years earlier. This theme was not actually used in the movie, but it was on the ST album and sort of inspired musically by the opera "the mikado" which runs throughout the whole ending of the movie. The composer tried to get this instrumental to be the follow up single to the film's theme song "Ready To Take A Chance Again" (sung by Barry Manilow) but Arista didn't see it. The song lost out at the Oscars to "Last Dance" from "Thank God It's Friday"-- A forgetful film, but In my opinion, it was the academy making a Disco themed overcompensation, for shutting out the Bee Gees, the prior year, for their deserved work on "Saturday Night Fever"

Love this movie intro and the disco music was very thrilling. I'm not from LA but I'll bet they had better channels than philly.

Besides Myers, another longtime KHJ/9 announcer who may've been heard on this clip was Ron Tank

WOR-TV in New York also had "Pat and Mike" in their vaults around this time. Prior to that, its New York airing rights were held by WNBC-TV (from 1963 to c.1972) and then WNEW-TV (prior to 1975).

@TheRenard10 Ted Myers was the longtime voice of KHJ-TV. He was at Channel 9 from its earliest days as KFI-TV and had originally come over from KFI radio.

Apparently, KHJ called their afternoon movie series "The 3:30 Movie" after KABC cancelled their "3:30 Movie" in 1980.

@calchick82 Yeah, but I'm hesitant to include Late Show and Early Show because those were generic CBS group opens that were used in NYC and I believe all their markets. I also think they trademarked those names - why else do you think they were repurposed for their morning show(yes, I know that stops soon) and their two late night talk shows?

I miss the KHJ clips. Where's been the announcer for that station? What was his name? About those call letters, I remember there was a jingle. I'm still waiting for Utube 2 post that. It's been so long since I've heard it. I was a youngster. Whatever happened to that KHJ tv sign off back in 1982? Did they remove it? KCAL also had those. That station was old school. On that channel, programs that would air r Elvira, Joker's Wild, Tic Tac Dough, the People's Court, also, the million dollar movie.

"The Early Show" title was indeed used by the other CBS O&O's, including WCBS-TV New York (weekdays from 1951 to 1968, Saturday afternoons from 1957 to the '80's). The New York open, by the '70's, was the same as "The Late Show," "The Late Late Show" - and for that matter, "Picture for a Sunday Afternoon." KNXT's "Early Show" open was on here a few years ago, but since taken off.

Let me correct that: WNBC in New York had this film from 1963 to 1970, WNEW from 1970 to 1975, and then WOR for several years starting in 1975.

Hulkie, after WABC ended their 4:30 Movie in 1981, WOR-TV picked up the slack, although they would alternate between 4:30 and 4:00 movies.

@HulkieG The names of the Late Show and the Early Show may be trademarked by CBS, but I don't think NYC and the other markets used "The Fabulous 52!"/"The Early Show" movie open(different titles-"52!" ran Sat nights & "Early Show" ran either Sat or Sun afternoons, don't exactly recall), because I think somebody would have posted that one by now, and I have yet to see it. Maybe it was exclusive to KNXT? That's what I think.

Would you, or anyone you know, happen to have the intros/outros for KABC's "3:30 Movie"? Thanks. Also... there's a new "4:30 Movie" clip from NYC... it features the "bullhorn guy" with "The 4:30 Movie" coming out onto the screen. Note that there's no sound attached thereto.
