KHJ 93 Los Angeles - Boss Radio Sneak Preview - Roger Christian - April 29 1965
Boss Radio 93 KHJ was THE station to listen to in SoCal in the 1960s, into the 70s. Lots of excitement, jocks bigger than life, fast jingles, outrageous contests, and of course, THE HITS, made the station extremely popular.
Feel free to check out some of the many other videos on the Ellis B Feaster's Radio Channel! Established in 2008!
You Tube's oldest RADIO AIRCHECK MUSEUM with a NEW VIDEO posted daily at 3PM EST.
After over 40 years working on the radio, I have recorded lots of my own radio air checks of ME on the air, and many of my friends as well. You'll find audio of many radio personalities who have passed away, but have passed their audio to me to share here. You'll find radio airchecks from the 1940s, through the 1990s. We also talk about radio broadcasting. If you happen to have classic airchecks, maybe even of yourself on the air, we'd love to share it here!
If you are on the radio, or do voiceovers for You Tube videos, I have tips to make your radio show or video voiceovers better!
In addition to sharing audio from my 40 years in broadcasting, we also share videos about Travel & Cruising. I share tips on how I travel cheaply, so you can do it also!
**BTW, I edit all music out of airchecks to avoid music rights issues.**

I met Roger Christian at his house a couple of times in the later years of his life. His brother, Dave Fairfield, (half brother) was a friend of mine over the years. Roger's other brother was also a DJ at a country western station in Ventura, Calif. I'm just glad I had a chance to meet Roger, myself.

Wow! It's rare to get Roger Christian stuff! Amazing! Roger Christian worked along side Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys, where he co-wrote songs like Shut Down, Little Deuce Coupe, and my personal favorite Don't Worry Baby.

CKLW had a huge signal that blanketed most of the Eastern seaboard from Detroit-Windsor. CKLW was my introduction to the Drake-Chenault sound. It came in on Long Island at night like it was in NYC. Eventually, NY got a Drake station, WOR-FM, though it didn't call itself "Boss Radio". OR-FM was The Big Town Sound.

@@MiamiMike88 Not exactly. OR-FM played currents with lots of pre-64 oldies. They didn't play bubblegum songs, like "Sugar, Sugar". OR-FM was targeted more towards adults 18-34.

Listened to 'CK' in Chicago at night also, if I turned my radio just the right way so as to tune out WBBM at 780 which would bleed-over CK at 800. But most of the time we listened to WLS or competitor WCFL 1000, both powerhouses in their own right .

I noticed that the DJ mentioned that the "Million Dollar Battle" would begin that evening That was a program, lasting 93 hours, that would try to determine the most popular songs for each year beginning in 1950. They would start by playing two songs and ask listeners to phone in votes as to which was their favorite. The winner would be dubbed the champion and would be played again, followed by another song, dubbed the challenger. Then listeners would vote on which of those they liked best. For example, for 1950, they would play the champion "Mona Lisa" by Nat King Cole followed by the challenger "Bewitched" by Gordon Jenkins. If "Mona Lisa" won, it would be played again (and I believe it did win for the year 1950).

I always wondered what happened to roger Christian I met him as a kid in Sherman Oaks but at that time he worked for K-RTh 101 so that was 80’s I was a kid looking to make little money so I would ask people if they wanted I would put their trash cans out on trash day and put them in for like .50 cents that was a lot 45’s were $1.29 . I asked him if had any little task he said no i don’t I said ok thanks and he asked are you saving for something I said yeah I want to buy the “ bay city rollers “ dedication L P .. he said really I said yeah music + has it for $4.99 and I have $3.00 .. he said tell you what help me move these box’s and I will give u $2.00 I said ok I help him move them and he said here’s $2.50 because they charge tax too ( dumb kid what do I know ) he said I co wrote a song with them . I’m like come on he said really I play their records on the radio I said your on the radio ? he said yes my name is roger Christian I used to work at 93. KHJ and I work on K-RTH 101 now . I’m like wow he showed a small black and white promo pic with his name and K-RTH 101 log... I should have kept it 🙁 . He said bring the album by and I will show you my name on the song I co wrote . I said ok I brought it the next day didn’t even unwrap yet So i go to his house and he was home I saw his car .. he came out and we opened the LP and sure enough his name was on the album under the song he co-wrote .. see I told u I’m like WOW ! That is cool he just laughed and smiled I said well thanks for helping me get the album .. to this day I still have the album he didn’t sign it but to me it has a value I could not place on it .. because I got to meet him and I’m so sorry that he passed away but I will never for get him .. I believe he has a wife I met her once too .. different story but again about what a genuine down to earth person he was I will never for get him for the great friend he was .. may god bless him and Rest In Peace...

Thanks for this! .... who would have thought that at age 72 the highlite of my week would be taking my trash out, mid-pandemic, on Tuesday evening for Wednesday pickup in Palm Springs!?! For reasons I won't go into in the 1970's I used to drive from western Michigan to LA about twice a year. It was first my Chicago rock stations WLS and WCFL, then KMOX "The Voice of St. Louis:, KOMA Oklahoma City, XELO .... 150,000 watt Mexican station, and finally after clearing California Cusotms ("agricultural inspection") I could start trying to tune in 93 KHJ in the center of the Universe, LA! Thanks for the memories!

Good stuff, Ellis. Especially this one from Roger. His career we're told started on French Road in Rochester at WSAY. He supposedly also worked at Gordon Brown's other station, WNIA in Cheektowaga (Buffal0). When "The Beatles Story" came out in 1964 on Capital, the Jerry Jack at that time on WSAY kept referring to Roger as a former WSAY good guy. I didn't believe it until landing in SoCal. My (too short) time at K-Earth 101 in Los Angeles gave me the chance to work with Jim Carson- who also had worked at KHJ, KFRC and KGB. Jim would tell stories about driving down Melrose Blvd. seeing Roger headed to work for his 10am shift. It was about 10:20 at the time. He also told me of the time he ran into Roger one afternoon at a local coffee shop near the KHJ studios -and Roger introduced him to a friend, Brian. It was Brian Wilson -as Tristan Rodriguez said . . he worked along side Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys, where he co-wrote songs like Shut Down, Little Deuce Coupe, and my personal favorite Don't Worry Baby. We lost Roger way too soon. He's not to be confused with the other Roger Christian from Buffalo who spent 4 decades with 102.5 (WBEN-FM, WMJQ, WTSS etc.) You'n I also walked the same path (sort of) through WBBF in Rochester.

@@EllisFeaster Great to hear from you Ellis. With all of the folks who went through the employment of Gordon P. Brown, the law of averages had to catch up and make at least one of his alumni famous. Not sure exactly when he (Roger) was there but I believe it was in the late 50's. Jim Edwards, (Jim Davis) CKLW etc. was a WNIA alumnus -and was responsible for getting Mary Lounsberry, WNIA GM into the Buffalo Hall of Fame..but I digress. Rochester was-and probably still is a pretty good radio town. Brother Wease and Dave Kane and many many others. I grew up a mile and a half from the WSAY transmitter.

Ellis you are the perfect person to answer a question I have had for years since you mentioned WFIL as being a Drake station. I hear so many say WFIL-Philadelphia was a Drake station and consulted by Drake-Chenault during the late 60's. Granted they called WFIL 'Boss radio' on the air and referred to their jocks as the 'Boss jocks.' However WFIL used Pams jingles during this time rather than the Johnny Mann jingles and the station did not have the authentic Drake sound. WIBG-Philadelphia called themselves the "Big 99' and used a Fake-Drake jingle package and truly did have the authentic Drake-sound despite the fact that WIBG was not an RKO-owned station but was owned by Miami's Storer Broadcasting and the program director of WIBG was Paul Drew who had led CKLW-Windsor to stardom as their PD under Drake. I realize WIBG was not consulted by Drake-Chenault. My question is...was WFIL consulted by Drake-Chenault during this time or was it not.
@EllisFeaster

Mike, I wish I had the answer, but I don't. I know both WIBG & WFIL had elements of Boss Radio. I was under 12 years old at the time. Someone will probably post the answer to your question.

I just had an interesting thought I wonder how many stations Drake channel programmed. And if there is a list of those stations I can think of several but I am sure there was some little 5000 white jobs running around that they programmed and it would be cool to hear some air checks from some of those less familiar stations

Mike Smith actually, to be perfectly honest. WFIL had basically the same format is WAKY in Louisville. In fact at one point, they were even using the same PMs jingle package which I believe was actually called the Philadelphia story.
