Most would be be wise to listen. The current system isn't sustainable unless you're happy being on the road that'll call for the most blood down the line? Perhaps yours. Mass automation is inevitable and at that point so is mass unemployment. Many jobs now are pointless, adding nothing, there to keep people occupied leaving many feeling despondent. Nobody likes to feel as though what they're doing is pointless. These men understand that changes in the economic and social systems, as well as our psykie must come about in order for us to evolve to the next level where it's less about making money and more about the betterment of yourself and humanity.

We are gonna have a hard time adjusting to this new reality. People still get a sense of dignity by paying their own bills, but at the same time, many lost sense of purpose. I think automation will be an opportunity for us to repurpose the nature of work. We still have a lot of problems to be solved: hunger, diseases still uncured, more materials need recycling, scaling production, etc. We are gonna need a lot fo work, and a lot of years of study to solve all those problems. Maybe in the future, work will mean study, research and creation more than just short-term tangible production to pay bills. We'll have to be more long-term oriented. The problem is most educational systems are not ready to qualify all those new people. (At least, not in my country, and I read that black districts in US are not doing well, either.) Schools barely can produce good math skills, much less produce a new generation of scientists, engineers and researchers.

Absolutely, I believe that when people take moonshots they believe in a long term impact that can change that particular ecosystem. But short term goals and greed and the propagation of such mindsets doesn't help anyone to make an impact. I believe both Larry and Sergey have a very broad mindset of how their work can positively impact the world in another 100 years.

Larry Page was asked how society should deal with unemployment that may arise from technological advances. He suggested that companies should consider hiring two part-time workers to do one full-time job. This way more people are employed, which is better for society. Not sure how much since that makes, but at least they are starting to think about the larger social consequences of what they are doing.

Search at the time didn't get google bc they all thought portals were the way to go when in fact search relevance was still sucky at them AND the growth of the web was still in its' infancy. Google stayed true to it's vision and was in essence the only real search engine left after the bubble. The other players never innovated and were never considered search engines at all.

On the point made that people need something to do, I couldn't agree more. I'll expand on that: as technology progresses, we're going to have even less and less "demand" on our time, and more time to fill. Essentially, I'm pretty certain this is where recent generations struggle; a lack of immediate goal and a growing sense of immediacy. This also leads me to agree with how Larry believes we only need to work 1% of our time to be productive (context is in today's standards if you're successful and efficient in your work, utilizing tools that are possible). I'm hopeful that education systems will broadly embrace this issue and understand the importance of engineers, and how that will be the staple career in coming years. Nearly every position held by a person will eventually be adapted into an automated machine system and knowing how to operate, maintain, and repair those systems will be the highest demand everywhere. There will always remain niches for human labor to some extent, but the growing demand for people that don't want to be a slave to the current system will inevitably be our downfall if this isn't understood and taken seriously by those in positions capable of making differences.

I don't get why self-driving cars will reduce the need for parking. The opposite I would say, since more people more easily moving around in private cars. Surely we are not saying that self driving cars get shared? For that we would need a revolution in expectations of private vs public transport, which seems more far fetched than AI improving on human driving abilities.

They could have instead 300 ground floor parking lot around the city, there would be one unified parking building that's 20 stories high, and the car can just drop you near your work so the roads won't be as congested around a certain building, which it is now, and then the car can just go park itself, and since it drives itself it won't give a crap that its wasting 15 minutes going up 20 stories to a parking spot. And before you leave your work just tell your car ahead of time, like OK google car, meet me at pickup destination in 15 minuted and it'll come pick you up. He even said the car will pick u up in the video

This also could greatly increase public transportation as you won't need to hire full time workers to do what is sometime a part time job. For example if u work at BART u would be hired to drive your own train and u would be paid full time, regardless if there are people or not. A robot can drive 1 car train, 2, 3 whatever it may be that fits perfectly the amount of people that are waiting at the station at any point in time, can run 24/7 and can decrease or increase in workforce to adapt to workload. Greatly decreasing money to hire real drivers.
