The only reason I'm against it is because it's guaranteed to go over budget and take longer than they believe. And there will STILL be traffic.
@HotaruGlaive2 ай бұрын
There will absolutely still be traffic and still be flooding. These people somehow think concrete reduces flooding. I am beginning to think the engineers in the state or who work for TXDOT are kind of dumb. I think if they did something like what is in Los Angeles where there are 2 levels to the freeway and the top level has fewer exits, that would help congestion since all of the people just passing through town (like 18-wheelers) would use the top lanes.

Look at the rebuild of 610 and 59 near the galleria. It took 8 years and a fortune. The whole project was a complete failure. Traffic jams are as bad as ever but probably worse since the population has substantially increased. There is no economic gain except by the brother in law or cousin of the TXDOT higher ups that get awarded contracts worth millions. What is really needed is a real commuter rail system that can take people from downtown Houston to Galveston within 60 minutes while making stops along the way for commuters in Clear Lake, League City, the South Belt, Texas City, etc. Stop putting those stupid small Metro trains on roads that have had bus service for over 70 years. Those trains CAUSE traffic jams when the rail gates drop and disrupt traffic light patterns.
@HotaruGlaive2 ай бұрын
And the expansion of the Katy Freeway. Traffic to Katy is horrible. And it will absolutely cause more flooding for someone. TXDOT is incompetent for the Houston area. It's like they slap on a one-size approach they would use in Austin or Dallas rather than looking at each city.
@Gizzmo50002 ай бұрын
How about this…. Just finish what you already started 15 years plus on 45 south still not even close to finished. The expansion started before my kid was born and now old enough to drive and you’re still not done. Wtf

"More parks, less freeways" Some people are simply too naive to have their voices heard. They would do better to speak less and listen more. Houston is a big city, it isn't getting any smaller, and traffic is already horrific... that chick needs to grow the F up.

But thinking there is only one answer - widen- is dumb and just not innovative at all. They said that about the Katy Freeway and it is more congested and there is more flooding out that way than previously.

1) The expansion projects have been a total disaster. Use I-10 and US-290 as perfect examples. Total congestion daily, seven days a week, all hours. 2) HCTRA will implement toll lanes in this expansion just like they did on I-10 and 290. 3) The number of fatalities will rise just like it did with the I-10 and US-290 expansion projects. 4) HCTRA needs to suspend toll charges while this project is in place to relieve the commuters. The community needs to come together on this and make this heard. Way too many people commuting inbound and outbound around this intended project. This will have a massive negative impact on the local economy.

@KarenWinford2 ай бұрын
Water level I don't think will allow subway systems. San Antonio has upper levels for traffic traveling through town. Why is that not concerned here.
@paulstewart112 ай бұрын
@@KarenWinford An elevated or submerged system is what's needed, one that does not interfere *at all* with street/pedestrian traffic. I've heard about how our flooding/soil situation isn't feasible for a subway system many times over the years, but I have a hard time believing that since we've had large networks of underground development all over the city. The downtown and med center tunnel system, the Galleria, the subway at IAH airport...we've built miles worth of 59 and I-10 underground, and while they've flooded a few times, that doesn't nullify their purpose over 99% of the time.

Imagine thinking that more concrete and wider lanes will reduce flooding. TXDOT are morons. Other cities have a "double decker" freeway with fewer exits on the top portion. Not only would this not mean paving over more land (which will 100% create flooding for neighborhoods), but it would also offer an evacuation route that is safe from flooding, it would be good for commuters (and truckers) who are just passing through downtown on their commute, etc. As we have seen from the Katy Freeway expansion - adding more lanes does not reduce congestion or flooding.

According to the 2010 US Census, the eight-county Houston region had 5.8 million residents and 2.7 million jobs. By 2040 the region is expected to add 3.8 million more people for a total of 9.6 million residents. That is an increase of 66 percent over thirty years, or a 1.5 percent growth each year. Similarly for jobs, the region is expected to create an additional 1.5 million jobs for a total of 4.2 million.
