Think of it this way. When you support Buddhism, you help keep the knowlegde that the Buddha discovered alive. In my opinion, Buddhism can really bring you a deeper understanding of the issue of suffering associated with existence and its recommendations on how to live in this life so that life is less stressful and peaceful. Supporting social issues like donating to building hospitals is also good because they help relieve physical and certain mental pains. I think the deeper point here is that Buddha's path is much more comprehensive. Relieving physical pain is wonderful, however if one is only healthy in body, but not healthy in the mind. That's cannot be true cure. A true cure is internal, or mental, not physical alone. So Buddhism does not discourage healthy body. However, it emphysizes the healthy of the mind as supreme.
