As my adventures in Pakistan continued, I headed from the city of Peshawar to the world-famous Khyber Pass to go on an exciting Afghan street food tour in the town of Jamrud, Pakistan. Let’s go explore the sights, sounds, and flavors of the Khyber Pass!
My guide Rashid from Manaky and I began our Khyber Pass street food tour in nearby Peshawar. We’d be taking a day trip to get to the Khyber Pass, which is a mountain pass just 30 minutes from the Pakistan/Afghanistan border. It was once part of the ancient Silk Road, so lots of explorers and invaders, including Alexander the Great, passed through there!
👕 DAVID’S BEEN HERE MERCH: teespring.com/...
I couldn’t wait to explore it! It takes roughly 1 hour to drive from Peshawar to the Khyber Pass. Along the way, we’d stop to get some channa, malai, chai, and parathas for breakfast!
It was March, so the area around the Khyber Pass is cool this time of year. We passed through the main gate, Baab-e-Khyber, which is the main symbol of the pass. From there, we found a street food vendor selling channa (chickpeas), chicken, beef stew, and more.
Nearby is another vendor who makes parathas in a tandoor. On the way to see him, we saw vendors selling roasted corn and chaat ingredients including sev!
There are lots of Afghan people here, as there is a lot of commuting between the two nations here. There are also lots of vendors selling brown sugar, fried meats, and household items.
We eventually found a vendor selling channa, malai, parathas, and bannu pulao. The friendly vendor gave me some tasty bannu pulao, which was moist and contained large chunks of beef.
The flavor was very different from other pulaos I’d had, as it didn’t contain raisins, chickpeas, or dried fruits. It was basically just rice and beef!
Then, we watched the guys pat out their roghni parathas and place them in a deep tandoor. Lots of people from the came out to greet me as I watched! They were too kind!
The roghni paratha is different from others I’d had. It’s thinner and crispier. Halfway through the baking process, they take it out, brush more ghee on it, and put it back in the tandoor!
The paratha with the channa, chilies, onions, and cucumbers was excellent. I loved the crispiness! Then, they gave me a corn chapati, which was like cornbread. I loved dipping it into the oil from the channa.
The chilies weren’t too hot, and the chickpeas were nice and soft. The cucumber, onion, dill, and yogurt salad on the side was nice and refreshing. Eating among the community was such a special experience, and the way they all embraced me was so heartwarming!
Next, Rashid and I continued exploring the town. We found popcorn vendors and people selling thin samosas containing potatoes and herbs. There were also sugarcane juice vendors.
Further on was a mosque overlooking the Jamrud Bazaar. As we continued, we passed people carrying massive blocks of ice, vegetable vendors, and more. One of them let me try some sugarcane, which was full of water and very sweet!
Tons of people came out to watch as I explored. It was intense but everyone was so friendly. It was such a beautiful experience!
Next, we found a vendor selling kheer made with brown sugar before ending our time in Jamrud Bazaar.
What an incredible time exploring the Kyber Pass street food market in Jamrud, Pakistan!

@@Og_AkhilRjn There are travel restrictions as far as I know bro. We cannot freely travel to Gilgit either. It is not Indian mindset, it is the mindset of both the countries and its people. We are not so different, and deep down a common man wants to live in peace. It is on the political level and corrupt practices that instills poison in our mind.

@Nee Anderson Well we cannot disagree to that, my wife had commented the same a few days ago while watching David's Pakistan free-food adventures. But still there might be a 50/50 chance because in these parts of the world, if you have travelled to similar countries, they do treat TRAVELLERS/GUESTS of all color and race the same way. I am not "white" but I have had similar experience in India, Turkey, Iran, Ukraine, Jordan, Iraq, Syria, Azerbaijan and back in the late 80's when I was a teenager I had experienced similar hospitality in Kirgizstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, I have been offered free of cost food and bed MANY MANY MANY times..... More than 30 years ago I had also been to Poland, UK, Germany, Bulgaria where I wasn't offered a single cigarette or a lollipop or a popsicle for free hahaha So we can't judge this fact by race or color I think we have to travel and archive a vlog like David :)))) Love and Peace :)

Theyl point there finger out as ask if a person pashtuns the term chitrali cap is only probably used in Cities of Pakistan and call it chitrali topi. No one in pashtun areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa says it. We say Pakol or topeh meaning hat I know origin and respect it also why are you bringing up afganistan 😂. im not from there You can create a pink pakol if you want. all Im saying there diffrent types of Pakols. For example waziristan pashtun have their own. they call it Wazir/Khostwal pakol. Its wider and has curves on it They ober there dont call it chitrali neither did that specific design kf the wazir pakol originate in chitral. The main idea of the standard pakol may have.

4:57 this thing, we used to eat in villages, its called bhura our side, its a replacement for sugar.. i am correct, right neighbour???

We call it gurr here. It's more untreated version of sugar. Like after sugarcanes are cut down the juice is cooked at high flame and a few things are added until it turns into gurr. And yes it's a replacement of sugar.

Bhura is in form of powder.. where gurr is in stone or rock... in my childhood at village i used to eat poha , curd and bhura on the top with cooked vegetable..

They're eating gurr in this video. It's frequently used in Peshawar to mix in khawa.

@@rottenapple6531 Actually, just outside of Peshawar was an NSA/Air Force listening post. A tour there was 15 months long.....and I stress the "Long" part! It was the 6937th Comm. Group if you want to look it up. If you are into aircraft, look up Francis Gary Powers and his U-2 shoot down.

It’s called Jaggery not brown sugar. Your guide was mentioning it again and again in all your videos. Secondly the chicken which you ate previously was not chicken chargha it’s called Sajji which is a Baluchistan dish. Thirdly Bannu pulao is not Afghani rice whereas Afghani pulao is called kabali pulao with raisins and fried carrots on top of it. The kheer (rice pudding) was brown in color because they used jaggery instead of sugar.
