BUY, LEASE OR FINANCE THE KIA E-NIRO FROM OSV: bit.ly/39Mc7cd
The Kia e-Niro offers another spin on full-electric technology to buyers in the mid-sized Crossover segment.
Ten Second Review
Kia's full-electric e-Niro offers nearly 300 miles of WLTP-rated battery-powered driving range and a progressive package that buyers prepared to consider paying over £30,000 for this kind of car will probably like. The full-electric part of the mid-sized Crossover segment is presently quite a small one, but you can bet it will quickly grow, and cars like this are the reason why.
Background
Kia hasn't set out to re-define the electric vehicle market with this e-Niro model, but it does want to try and further perfect what a car of this kind is capable of offering. We've already seen both hybrid and Plug-in hybrid versions of this Niro. Here Kia has completed its set of electrified powerplants with this full-electric version. It shares its engineering with Hyundai's Kona Electric, but is a little less overtly SUV than that car. Ready for a battery-powered vehicle yet? The tipping point is getting closer...
Driving Experience
If you're wondering how far it goes between charges, the answer is up to 382 miles (though that's rated on the WLTP city cycle); you won't get anything like that on the open road if you use the performance on offer. The e-Niro is equipped with a long-distance 64 kWh battery pack paired with a 201bhp (150kW) motor, producing 395Nm of torque, enabling the car to accelerate from 0-to-60mph in just 7.5 seconds. Like the Niro Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid variants, the new electric model is front-wheel drive.
The battery pack is located low down in the body, between the two axles, giving this crossover a centre of gravity more akin to that of a saloon or a hatchback. With a relatively wide stance, the e-Niro should offer drivers a reasonable feeling of stability on winding roads. The car is equipped with fully independent rear suspension, tuned to deliver high speed and immediate handling responses and filter out small vibrations at higher speeds when travelling over poor surfaces. The e-Niro's regenerative brakes - 305 mm in diameter at the front, 300 mm at the rear - exhibit a consistent, linear deceleration and braking feel, and harvest kinetic energy to recharge the battery pack on the move.
Design and Build
The exterior design of the e-Niro is punctuated by halogen headlights with Bi-Function projection, front fog lights, LED daytime running lights and LED rear combination clusters. Privacy glass for the rear windows and tailgate deliver a more upmarket appearance. The unique 17-inch alloy wheels have been especially designed and optimised for the pure-electric e-Niro, and the roof rails give a rugged and lifestyle-orientated appearance, accentuating its crossover stance.
The design of the centre console represents the biggest change for the e-Niro, with the all-electric powertrain not requiring a traditional gear lever and gear linkage. The physical transmission has therefore been replaced with a new 'shift-by-wire' rotator dial drive selector. The drive selector dial sits on its own highly-ergonomic panel which extends out from the base of the central armrest. In addition to the rotator dial, this new panel also houses buttons for the electronic parking brake, heated seats, heated steering wheel, drive mode selector, parking sensors, and the Niro's braking 'Auto Hold' function. The new panel requires no bulky transmission tunnel, enabling Kia's designers to create a larger storage area at the base of the centre console.
The dashboard features bright blue trim around the air vents, echoing the trim highlights found on the outside of the car. As for practicality, the rear seats handily fold down in a 60/40 fashion, with a luggage area load cover designed to hide items from prying eyes. There's a 451-litre boot that's bigger than most electric cars can offer.

I’ve had my Kia e-Niro for 6 months and 23,000 miles now, never managed to get the range below 280 miles, best so far was been 361 miles. Fault free, comfortable and certainly quick enough. Without doubt the best all round car I’ve ever owned

The e-Niro is an incredibly popular car, which is why the current waiting list is so long - which is a shame for those who have yet to order theirs...definitely sounds as though you would recommend 😊

Yep, incredibly well researched and delivered review. Had this car for 3 weeks now (family of 5) and absolutely love it. After over a year of research and a 6 month wait from paying my deposit its been worth the wait. A really fun and pleasurable drive. I’d heard countless times how fun EVs were to drive but was expecting this to be a bit more stodgy - perhaps due to its staid looks.

Most comprehensive review I’ve watched to date. I’ve had the top spec ‘self charging’ verity Niro for 3 months and I’m VERY pleased. The only thing to mention would be the adaptive cruise control and the stop start abilities. Unlike a VW Golf where the vehicle will automatically set off after coming to a complete stop, the Niro will not. The ACC will cut out if the vehicle in front is stationary for a few seconds and has to be reengaged once you and the vehicle in front are moving again. If stopped at a junction and the vehicle in front turns off you cannot reengage the ACC until the Niro is at 20MPH or can see another moving vehicle in front of you.

Great review, I was following the Kona for awhile and see it as a good main stream electric. This Niro looks great too. For many in urban areas who don’t have garages and off street parking let alone a home charging outlet, it will be a challenge to charge these vehicles. Hopefully solid state battery technology succeeds along with quick charging stations that can fully charge an EV during a rest stop.

We're from Manila, & what we have here is the Nissan Kick's e-Power hybrid, which uses batteries but has an ICE on board connected to a generator that charges the batteries on the Go. When the battery goes low the ICE turns on & charges the battery without the need to stop. The ICE is low displacement so it's very economical. And even when you get home at 2am you wont need 8hrs to charge the car battery & also no need to have a home charger or go to an out of the way charging station when you're out. And it can go very far on bat teries aloneI, I hope more car manufacturers make cars like these but with hydrogen powered internal combustion engine.

Is it fair to compare the Kona to a Tesla ? Apart from liking any particular Tesla model it's the supercharging network that has been developed by them that persuades customers to pay the price of a Tesla ? I will be leasing a model Y as soon as its possible for that very reason! Having run 3 Leafs (currently the 2019 model) I know how tricky it is to rely on chargepoints in unfamiliar areas ! If you are going to rely on one car then you have to know that the 'fuel' will be available when you need it!

I don't understand the pricing differences between countries. I bought a Niro Hybrid EX in New Zealand for $37,000. Where as the only version of the 64kWh eNiro sold here is more than double that at $76,000. The Kona EV 64kWh is priced between $78,000 and $84,000. Now the crazy part, the Tesla model 3 standard range plus without autopilot costs the same as the eNiro at $76,000.

"Best Electric Car" - possibly, certainly a very nice one; "...you can buy?" - there's the problem. UK waiting list is a year or more, last I heard. If you order it now, by the time you can actually get one there will be the VW ID.3, Te Renault Zoe 50, the Peugeot e-308 and quite possibly others competing fiercely with it.

well, i mean by the time you get it, you will be able to "order" an ID 3, but no doubt a similarly long waiting list will see you not actually recieve it for a while after. This will always be the case though, especially true for EV's in that new models are going to be coming out no matter when you pull the trigger that may make you question your purchase.

Excellent review, and I’ve seen a few on this E Niro. A question that doesn’t seem to be addressed in the manual, nor can anyone seem to answer, is what does that button on the center console marked “P Release” do? The Parking Brake button both sets and releases the parking brake by pulling up and pushing down. Maybe P Release is a separate dedicated button to release the Parking Brake? Or is it for something else?

Depreciation is the Achilles heel of EVs. Ford itself has stated they expect the Mustang Mach-E to retain 40 percent of its value after three years and only 30% when four years old. You can buy a LOT of fuel for the difference in depreciation between an EV and ICE. Has anyone on that side of the pond tested the FCA system of the Niro/Kona? IIHS tested the Optima and Sonata and they plowed right through a pedestrian dummy. My current car, a Forester XT has EyeSight and it works really well and has taken the car from 60 mph to zero twice when deer ran in front of me at night. If it can detect a fast moving deer it can certainly "see" a child dart out into traffic.

@@OsvUkVehicleSupply Two actually. My Forester hit 55k miles on July 3rd and the F350 I use to haul stuff around my farm is becoming unreliable after 257k miles. The depreciation and lack of interior space is hurting them in my comparisons. I don't understand why car companies don't make mid sized and compact CUV EVs. They have more room for batteries and higher profit margins. I have several other autos so range anxiety isn't a problem. But they NEED to have enough room for my 100 lbs bluetick coonhound to be comfortable, which means good cargo space with the rear seats both up and down. The only EVs I've looked at that didn't suck in that area are the Kona/Niro and I don't like their charge port location. It seems like an unprotected after thought.

On more than one occasion I've walked out of the deal JUST for this reason. My god, wth are you supposed to do when you're in the middle of nowhere, at night, and have a flat? What it you have no cell coverage?? I say f**k off to this trend! Otherwise, an absolutely brilliant review. Thank you!

Yes it is the best electric car you CAN'T buy. Wish it had traditional handbrake though..like the feel of what's going on, handbrake offers fine control, and confidence... don't want it rolling away if it fails.

Answer: no, because you can’t buy it. Ridiculous waiting list and increasing prices from 2018/9 model. If I was to consider a BEV SUV that I can’t buy yet I may as well wait for the Volvo XC40 Recharge.

A lot of wrong information in this review. EV batteries can be recycled at end of life. Some of us charge our electric cars using solar which is completely free and clean. A Nissan Leaf can be used as an only car, I’ve had mine for 3 years and regularly do 300 miles.

Early days yet, but when these car batteries end their automotive life they will be perfect for static home battery charging applications for years of use. By the time they are dead there will be recycling plants recovering their components. Win Win !

The answer is no. Reasons: You can‘t buy it anywhere, waiting lists of >1 year are ridiculous! And when it finally will be available, it will feel old, because it is not built on an EV platform. Vs the „car OS“ of a Tesla, it already feels old today. It has a front motor and you can therefore never fully realize its torque without spinning the wheels. It is not built on an EV platform. Fast charging is too slow, with about 76 kW max (mostly less). Others can do up to 192 kW. I have test driven it (it even was my first EV experience), but after a Tesla Model 3 I saw what can be done so much better. The price is OKish, but seems to rise and if you can get a Tesla M3 Standard Range Plus for the same price, that is by far the better EV.

Sorry, Old review as you cannot get the First Edition now as it is being face lifted and this will cost you £1700 extra (led headlights, 10.25" infotainment screen, UVO App etc) KIA also need to come clean that the reason you cannot get them is they are holding them back as much as possible in Europe till 2020 as the new EU emissions fines come into force and if they sell them now they don't get any benefit like they will if they are sold in 2020. Ask anyone who has ordered one what info they get from KIA or dealers about deliveries etc, KIA are not doing themselves any favours with the way they are doing EV's and the way they are treating their customers. I like KIA (I have had 4 and still drive one now), but the way they are doing EV's......

Could be that. But there has been a widely reported problem with EV battery shortages from legacy EV manufacturers, as they are all relying on LG, Samsung, etc. to supply their batteries for them. Tesla was smart to make sure they had their own factory for that reason. cleantechnica.com/2018/08/12/electric-car-growth-produces-battery-shortages-carmakers-cant-match-production-with-demand/
