Background: I've owned this car for a bit over two months. With regards to the self parking, the biggest problem with this car is that the owner's manual does a poor job of explaining the details of how these systems work. Lots of owners, collaborating online, have pieced together how it all works. To address some of the not-so-helpful content about the parking systems in this video: (Few reviewers take the time to learn how it works, and it's not their fault.) 1) The reason the car stopped backing up into the parking space around the 6 minute mark is that if you're doing this from outside the car, you have to stay close to the car. Once it got a certain distance from the key fob, the car stopped. 2) It does NOT read the lane lines It will only pull straight backwards or straight forwards using the two buttons on the key fob. 3) It DOES have the ability to autonomously park in a straight-in spot like that, but only when there's solid objects like cars next to the space. It can't read the paint lines to tell where the spot is. Also, this is initiated by pushing and holding the parking camera button from inside the car. It's not very good at this party trick, however. You're better off parking it yourself unless the spot is too tight to let you exit the car. 4) It can autonomously pull into or out of a parallel parking spot, also by pushing and holding the parking camera button. It does this well. Better than I can, honestly. The second part of the video describing the HDA2 (Highway Driving Assist 2) and LKA (Lane Keeping Assist) features was dead on. The car does a good job of following lanes on the highway, and following the car in front of you. It's very, very good (but not perfect) at avoiding cars impinging on your lane. It will, for example, squeeze over to one side if a car is getting to close on the other side. It can autonomously take evasive steering action, as well as autonomous emergency braking. There's no phantom braking problem like there is on some other cars. It does a really good job of warning you about safety problems, such as when you're drifting over a line, or if you put on a turn signal and there's a car in your blindspot. The radar tracking line on the HUD shows you which car the cruise control is following. It really inspires confidence when you see it switch to the car that just cut in front of you -- as well as the deceleration to avoid said car. Most owners don't see the point of the automatic lane changing. Yes, it works. But it's easier (and faster) to turn the wheel than to wait for the car to change lanes for you. The other parts of HDA2 are really helpful, however, and make long trips much easier. The blindspot cameras that get displayed on the instrument cluister are activated by the turn signals. The cameras give you a really good wide angle view of the lane next to you. Perhaps this will encourage people to use turn signals more often??? It reads speed limit signs and displays the speed limit in the instrument cluster and on the HUD. It can, if you wish, change speeds automatically when the speed limit changes. I'm not fond of this feature. It's not so great being the only car that slows down. Under the right conditions, on cruise control, it will slow down to take steep turns.

The Adaptive Cruise Control also stays on when driving in city traffic. It requires no accelerator or braking by the driver and simply follows the stop and go of the car in front of you. If you come to a complete stop, you have to use the accelerator pedal or click the cruise control (+) button on the steering wheel to start up again but the Adaptive Cruise Control stays turned on. I'd imagine the aggressiveness of the lane changing is algorithmic and culturally biased. Some cultures being more aggressive drivers than others. The KIA seems to take the perspective of comfortable touring and good driver etiquette. It signals for a few seconds to inform the surrounding vehicles, then if the coast is clear does the lane change over a longer distance. This is a smooth, leisurely transition that is good for passenger comfort and the other drivers on the road.
@bilgyno12 жыл бұрын
Well... Use it for some time and your opinion may change. The lane change is extremely cautious and fails for very annoying reasons. Give a little bit of steering input (which happens easily when reaching for the indicator stalk) and it won't work. Hold the steer too loosely, and it won't work. If there's a car coming from behind in the lane you're moving into: it won't work, even if the car is 100s meters away and there's plenty of space/time to accelerate. Here, the slowness of the system doesn't help, because it often happens a lane change is aborted half way for oncoming traffic. A human driver would just accelerate a bit and complete the lane change. Finally, lots of road segments and lines are not supported. When it does work (very quiet roads, good line visibility) it is nice and relaxing. But way too many situations where it doesn't work. Hoping for updates for my Ioniq 5 here...

Like all EVs, this is temperature and speed dependent. Mine gets between 250-270 depending on how aggressive I am. On long trips I can go about 3.5 hours, though the choice of when to stop will be dictated by where the DC chargers are. It will be rare to experience an 18-minute 20-80% charge. Many of the DC chargers will not give you the full beans, even when advertised as 350kw. I’d count more on 25-30 minutes unless you find a good spot that doesn’t throttle output.

Interesting comments. You know for most of us ADAS is changing so fast we are not tracking the milestones and caveats. What would be a valuable service is to create a Munro test track / benchmark and give the cars a Sandy-Score! The track would simulate whatever NHTSA does plus user opinion as shown here. So create a matrix of challenge conditions to exacerbate the stimulate ADAS responses. Go down the check list of what car/feature levels/ functions are advertised and met, etc. All cars go through the same gauntlet with zero bias or exceptions. Then Consumer Reports up a SandyScore! I really actually feel sorry for Tesla's overpromotion of their ADAS. Calling it Autopilot evoked certain assumptions and it worked so damn well it seemed sentient and invincible. But of course it has limits. No ADAS can handle road construction with lane divides not the intended route. Nor could they handle emegency situations where Emegency vehicles and personnel are moving in and out of traffic lanes. In those situations I'd expect a driver to take full control.

Since this car has the "split" spoiler above the rear window, I'm wondering why Kia didn't place the rear-facing camera in the center support, instead of where they did at the bottom of the car. A higher wide angle camera makes more sense to me than a low camera does. A higher camera can able to see farther away than a low camera. I'm surprised that Kia doesn't make the screen that shows your car's surroundings have a color-matched visual. The driver is in a red car, but the screen defaults to a white car. This ia an expensive vehicle, you would think that a color-match would be standard. I've only seen this once before, on a first generation Aston Martin Lagonda that featured this same technology, but the car, which was maroon, appeared black on the screen. Unlike the Kia, the surrounding cars did not seem like a giant's toys.

Probably too far from the car for the key to properly register

I'm truly astonished at how many 'driver aids' are deemed to be necessary these days along with the supporting technology together with significant added cost. In my day, a air of eyes were considered enough to be able to drive a vehicle competently ! I can't help thinking that the job of the driver is being de-skilled.

When remote parking you are standing to far away from it.

It's interesting. It looks like a good car. But funny to see how automakers copy from tesla, but can't just get it to the same level of software quality for the most part. Like with backing up remotely, lane switch assist, etc.

I have a Kia, this is a Kia. Nice. But they will never grow up to be a Tesla!

Tesla's camera system is a joke compared to this. But I hate the piano black interior trim! Even so, this car may be my Tesla replacement vehicle because Tesla's have gotten so much more expensive now. Is disappointing though that it failed the parking test.

I liked the dedicated review focused on self driving. I bought a 2017 Model S and with the promise of FSD within a year. I don't regret the purchase but Tesla better up it's game. Competition is coming on strong. Hopefully Munro will add it to all the new car reviews.

They didn't promise, they projected and then admitted it was harder than they thought. Strong? The competition is slowly creeping into the game.

You must be within 4M of the vehicle for the remote parking feature to work. This is easily available information. I mean, bruh, if you are going to demo a feature, don't blame the system when it doesn't do what you want when you didn't RTFM :) You could have Googled that *instantly*. That's a big oof from the person who is the autonomous vehicle and self driving "expert". *Shaking my head in disbelief*

I wish a company would get smart and do away with all that tech and camera crap and sell an ultra affordable EV. You could still sell a plain EV for the next 15 years before all those cameras are even necessary. The software still isn't good enough to use all that stuff yet.

The cost of the camera's is not the problem with the cost of the car. Camera's are CHEAP.

@@TheEvilmooseofdoom It's not just cameras-- it's all the sensors, the drive by wire controls, the R&D, the computers and other hardware, the AI driving, the automated parking, ect. ect.. They've spent all this time creating a system that is not needed. All I want is a very simple motor and controller and battery= THAT'S IT .. Give me hand crank windows, manual locks and manually adjustable seats. WE don't need a space ship--- we need something that moves down the road, and is super cheap... It needs to be totally standardized, with the same controller, same motor and same battery across several brands.. and they need to make millions of them. FOR CHEAP. China will end up doing it, just watch

As soon as this car is available when inventory is normal I will get one. Do not want to overpay. There are no Tesla Service centers in my state. That is a big negative for me. But the tesla is a great car.

If you don't want to overpay, don't buy from the dealership.

I like that Tesla has no STEALERSHIPS , I can't recall wanting to go back to any legacy auto dealer after I have been robbed blind, both in the sale of the car and the Service Dept.I guess some people like YOU want the Sales and Service staff hands in your wallet🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑

You can order a car, dealers will be more willing to sell at MSRP. The downside is you'll have to wait some months, but you're planning to wait anyway, so...

you were just too far away from the car for the remote parking to work.
