Kia K5 vs Hyundai Sonata - Who wins the battle of South Korean design?

Thanks for the comments on my previous video on what cars you want to see in a design battle and today we have a South Korean showdown thanks to East Terminal’s suggestion.
In the blue corner we have the sharp and crisp design of the Kia K5
Price range from $23,790 for the base model to $29,000 for the top of the line GT version
The Kia K5 is powered by a turbocharged 1.6L inline 4 putting out 180hp and 195 lb-ft of torque
FWD and 8-speed automatic transmission is standard.
In the red corner we find another bold South Korean design in the Hyundai Sonata
Price range from $24,150 for the base model to $33,000 for the top of the line N-Line version
The Hyundai Sonata powered by a 2.5L inline 4 generating 191hp, 181 lb-ft of torque.
FWD and 8-speed automatic transmission is standard.
The N-line and the GT both come with the same 290hp 2.5L 4-cylinder however the N-line only comes as FWD while the GT offers AWD in their sportiest trim level.

the sonata is one of the only modern "huge grill" designs on the market that i think was done very carefully and very well. some people justifiably dont like it, but i dont think its ugly by any means

I agree it doesn't look ugly like many other cars. But my favourite big grill would be Lexus. Lexus cars are just gorgeous :)

I really am impressed how interesting modern sedans look now. I would probably go with the K5 here. I would be interested if you could compare the the McLaren 720s and Ferrari 488 Pista.

I'm digging this format. Not sure if you've done this but a battle of the 22 M5 and RS7 would be interesting. I'd go with the M5(last good looking BMW sedan IMO) but I'd like to know your thoughts 👍🏻

I just got a new Sonata Limited but I also like the looks of the K5. But like others have said, the catfish has more tech. I used to hate the look of the new sonata but over time I've grown to like the robot catfish look.

i prefer the sonata in both exterior and interior term, the exterior of the k5 looks too complicated and weird in my opinion but overall, the hyundai lafesta, a chinese version of the elantra, looks the best

Loved my 2019 blue Kia Optima SXL turbo but the newer K5 is not offered with as much equipment so I went with a 2023 black Hyundai Sonata Limited. I like both and think they both have better looking designs and offer more value than their competitors imo. I love my black Sonata and would like to see the black grill and other black details offered to match the body colors. The Sonata's interior is more appealing to me though, and I go back and forth on this their exteriors.

The sonata concept sketches had hair outlets in the rear bumper too, but I think not including them in the final design made the production car look better. I feel like it's a cleaner design over all.

K5 gt-line has 180 hp. I have the Gt and it has 290 hp. I do wish it had a better interior like the sonata but it's a great car. I love it.

i like the review... my only issue is why did you review the kia k5 gt line vs a sonata limited? why not the sonata n-line? (they both have slight differences in the front and rear bumpers)

The AWD K5 is called GT line and it doesn’t have the 2.5T power train that’s in the GT and only comes with the 1.6T which has only 180 HP. The GT trim only has FWD. Kia did this because they didn’t wanna hurt the Stingers market

Personally, I couldn't care less about real exhaust tips or nice looking fake ones, I don't go down the road thinking hell yeah!! My exhaust is coming out from REAL EXHAUST TIPS! As long as it gets out, im good. I own a 2021 K5 GT LINE with premium package. Totally better looking than the Sonata, that why I picked it.

K 5 kooks better but 1.6 L engine may be noisy vs the 2.5 L in the Hyundai. I do like the Kia AWD option since I live in the snowy part of the US. 3 yr/36 k maintenance on the Hyundai is also very nice add.

the kia k gt does NOT come with an awd option, it is only fwd as well. Lower trims of the K5 have optional awd but not the GT.

There's something I don't like about the 2, the Hyundai looks front heavy and 'squished' maybe because of the grill design, at the back those taillights look Hondaish, loses points for that, and the Kia, the front reminded me of the early 2000's Mitsubishi Galant, like they did a modern redesign of it, kinda forcing the 'sportiness' in a regular car, like it doesn't belong in there. Bembli I want to know your point of view of everything that's confusing about the design in the Veloqx Fangio haha.

Kia won because nobody liked that catfish design by Hyundai. They hated it so much it forced Hyundai to skip the refresh and do a full redesign for the 2023 model year.

The Sonata interior design looks much better than the K5's, probably also due to their sibling luxury company Genesis and the trickle down of design and materials. Also wish the sides of the K5 rear lights matched the front, ie longer than cutting it short

For the 2022 model year at least, The K5 GT is FWD only. The GT-Line can get AWD, but not GT.

I did not like the way the sonata looked so I never gave it a second look I had a 2011 Hyundai sonata which is one of the best looking versions out of the sonata line next to maybe the 2018 version so I purchased the 2022 Kia K5 GT line

My taste is the crisp front end of the Kia goes along with the same crisp end of the Hyundai and vice versa with the more round and smooth front end of the Sonata with the smooth end of the K5. Just my 2 cents

The K5 has a more attractive front fascia and has the Sonata definitely beat when it comes to the interior layout. However the Sonata boasts a much cleaner design in the middle and in the rear, although they both have the same silhouette from the side profile. I don't like the chrome that extends all the way around the back of the K5 and that is ultimately the deal breaker for me.

I like both of them. So much better than anything coming out of Europe lately weather you find SK deisgns ugly or not. At least they try to make interesting cars. You see one VW you have just about seen them all. No passion at all in the European brands lately. Though this is not restricted to Europe look at Genesis copy and paste. Also this is how you rebadge a car. Somebody should have told GM and Ford.
