Thank you, Chris. You helped me make the decision to buy a Niro PHEV. I think I'm the first in Florida to get one. I am using the 110 charging cable it came with while I wait for the electrician to install the 240 outlet in my garage. Apparently there are no compatible charging stations around me. Keep making videos please as it helps me learn about my car.

Thank you again Chris for your videos, they are great. BTW for info of others: The shown charging station (EVSE) from Ratio Electric of Holland is a 230V/16A/3.7kW single phase charger and costs in Denmark around USD 800. It can be delivered with different options, e.g. with 5m type 2 charging cable, kWh meter/counter and a blue 230V/16A CEE mains power plug, so that you may install it yourself (if you already have the matching blue CEE 230V/16A power socket, connected straight to your mains power distribution board by a qualified electrician) :-).

Chris , im in the UK also , can you clarify what two cables the Niro Phev comes with ? Is it our standard 3 pin plug to type 2 , and another one with type 2 on both ends ?
@tonybkent
@tonybkent 6 жыл бұрын
@@daisy180709 I got mine in the UK last month. It has 3 pin on the one for "emergency" charging as in the video (and a chunky end for the car). There's also a separate type 2 cable. On that cable only one of those ends fits into the car and the other into the type 2 connector on the fast charger unit.

Properly the power loss will increase with less input current, as per the characteristic of the Switch Mode Power Supply, used in the car's on-board charger (and a lot of other electronics), it is properly designed to be most efficient at max. current rating, as also mentioned by another reader in this thread. So interesting if Chris is making a comparison of using high, medium and low current :-). In Denmark we have the possibility to rent a 11kW charging station/EVSE, against paying a monthly fee, with free home and public charging, so in that case you would not pay for the power loss of perhaps (360 days x 1 kWh) = 360 kWh loss/year (1kWh costs in Denmark ca. 0.38 USD)? Unfortunately the fixed installation fee for the Clever 11 kW charging station, is very high (12.500 DKK) for that amount you could buy 5.400 kWh! BTW according to Kia Denmark the on-board Charger will accept max. 14.5 A charging current and not 16 A.
@GameOver556
@GameOver556 6 жыл бұрын
Max Charge is 3.3kW. So you are correct that 16A cant be fully utilized.

2 hours 30 min. charging from 13% to 100% by a 16A charging station is fine :-). However, in the Kia Niro Danish brochure it says approx. 2 hours 15 min. for a 100% charge when using a public 230V/32A charging station? But then it does not indicate how depleted the battery is before charging? It could be interesting to know other Niro PHEV owners experiences with charging time and power losses (I am still waiting for my car). Btw, Kia Denmark has also informed a Kia Niro PHEV owner, that the car's max. charging current is 14.5A (3.3kW).

Hi Chris. Thank you for your videos. It helps someone to decide to buy this car or not. But I have questions for you. First: when you are driving Niro PHEV and you stop on crossroad, did you have to push down a brake pedal all the time when you are waitting, because the car has a little moving forward if you do not do it. In other words the car slighly moves forward even if acceleration pedal not pushed down. Do you have such experience? Second: did you try some apps (if exists) on smartphone to check some status of the car or maybe doing some settings remotely? Please write some answers this weekend. Your answers helps me to decide if I would buy or not this car. Thanks advance.

Yes, you have to hold down the break paddle, or set in park. It´s like a normal car regarding that. There are no Apps for the car in europe at least, think it´s abit different in the US, but can´t test that ;)

Pavol, yes - I think all automatic transmission cars work this way. Before I got my Niro last month I'd only ever driven automatics on holiday as hire cars and they all did the same. All were petrol-only. The Niro also has an anti-roll back feature if you are stopped on a hill. It "just works". Great car. Highly recommended.

My Niro seems to be great for my daily drives. My commute to work is 3 miles and to most errands is 5 miles so I've used no fuel. Charging 2-3 times per week hasn't raised my electric bill that I can tell, but it's just been 1 month. There is a buzzing in the back of the car some evenings after charging it. A cooling fan I assume. But it doesn't do this every time. Does yours do this?

Never noticed that, but I normally don´t drive the car until hours after the charge is done during nigth.

Regarding the UVO App (from the UK Kia Niro forum): www.kiaownersclub.co.uk/forum/smartphone-app-for-remote-control_topic36384.html jays 16 Jun 2017 at 10:37am The answer from Kia UK: "Our technical team have advised that UVO is designed for use in USA only as is Kia Remoto. There's not currently plans to bring them into Europe for a number of reasons. The first of these is that the UVO head unit is purely for an American market and includes features that won't function here - such as Sirius XM Satellite Radio. Secondly, the unit enables several functions such as remote start, that are not strictly legal under certain circumstances (you are not permitted to leave an unattended vehicle on the highway with the engine running for instance). And finally, the European Head Unit is not manufactured by UVO, but by LG or Mobis, depending upon the vehicle so there will most likely be no software compatibility. " rep24 16 Jun 2017 at 10:40am Thanks for the update, disappointed about the remote start but it's understandable, I'd forgotten about the law about an unattended vehicle with the engine running. Guess they don't have that in the US.

I get my my Niro in 3 days, I’m in the UK, do you get 2 charging cables or just the one? You mentioned in your video at the beginning that the cable in the bag should only be used in emergencies? If that is the case what cable was you using before your charging pod was install at home? Sorry for all the questions, I’m trying to do all the research I can before Wednesday. Thank you

Hi. Well it really depends on the weather, and how fast, and where you drive. On motorway 31, lots of highway or cold/bad weather 40 km and normally I do around 50 km of pure EV.

Garry, I added 16 miles of range over 18 miles of driving in sport mode just to see what would happen. Quite impressive, but of course not very environmentally friendly! This was on country lanes and then on a motorway that was busy so used cruise control between 50mph and 60mph.

I tried to read the manual about the different charging levels, it doesn't mention it at all! Since I don't have a proper charger in my garage I use the portable charger. Minimum is 8A and uses about 5.5A, reduced is 10A and uses about 8A & Maximum is 12A and uses about 11A. I use the minimum setting in my garage to eliminate the risk overheating the cables, it will charge to full over night anyway. I made a PDF to my Kia dealer since they had no idea how to change the setting for charging. You can find it here: 1drv.ms/b/s!AmpNwxwng-L2hZxgg3Tnp4kh53ThNA Btw, I have tried to change the charging levels by pressing the button on the back, nothing happens! Do I have to wait for charging to begin or is it my button that is broken?

David Djerf A member of the Danish Kia Niro Club forum reports (see below in Danish, use google translate), that he is using the "secret" knob on the back of the Kia home charger, so it's working :-). It properly has to be activated when connected and charging, keep the button down until it changes. However, he reports it will reset to the 12A setting, after unplugging the mains plug. There's no mention of this knob in the Danish or US manuals either, strange. Also beware, that if you reduce charging current, the electricity loss in the onboard charging system, properly increases quite a lot, as also mentioned by another reader above. Perhaps you could check and advice of your power loss for 12A, 10A and 8 Amps charging? kiaklub.dk/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=10734&p=51598&hilit=Bjarne&sid=1b1c8c06d64a7d636535bb30bd710fa9#p51598 Re: Min nye Niro plug-in af AlfaBjarne skrevet Ons 24 Jan, 2018 17:29 Hej Jeg har haft min Niro plug-in i godt og vel 2 måneder og benytter den medleverede "mormorlader" jævnligt i en installation med 13 Amp sikring på stikkontakten.

I also succeeded in changing with the 'rubber-button'. To me it appears that you have to hold it in whilst pushing the area with H, M, L on the front to make it change. Cant test it out now though as the car was rear-ended on the motorway the day after i got it 😭😭😭

Great Charging Loss Info: 12% If I'm understanding this: www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0360544217303730 properly, transformer loss is greater at lower charging rates, even if lower charging rates are better for the battery. In a few days I'll be saying goodbye to my Prius of 11 years and taking delivery of regular Niro. Even though I was amazed and pleased that the US taxes still provide a purchase bonus for PHEVs, the actual cost to buy one is less discounted, for actual purchase at dealerships. I would be very interested to know your actual costs of electric vs gasoline. I'm paying $0.19 per kwh, and $2.04 per US gallon. I doubt if your electricity is that expensive and your gasoline is that low. In deciding to buy the non-PHEV, which gets slightly better MPG, gas prices for me would have to increase to $3.30, even with no charging losses, just to break even. If you do an episode on cost, please report in liters or be clear if you're referencing US or Imperial gallons. I finally figured out the amazingly good numbers for MPG numbers I sometimes see reported outside the US are due to Imperial gallons which are 20% larger than US gallons. The fueleconomy.gov web site tells me the PHEV Niro gets 105 MPGe. Unfortunately, even before the 12% after the meter loss, an MPGe costs me $6.40 on my electric bill. Sigh. www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/Find.do?action=sbs&id=39799&id=39616&id=23599

Hi. I will look into that. But enegy prices in Denmark are high. I pay around $ 0,30 pr. Kw, due some reduced tax, but most pay 0,40- 0,45 pr. kw. For me I save around 30% on Ev compared to the gas price.
@TheGerm24

Your electricity is expensive. It depends a lot on the state in the US. I only pay about $0.11 per kwh in Texas and it could be lower if I didn't pay extra for wind.
@fredfeirtag1009

I was just wondering how people are calculating their costs of electricity. My bill is quite hard to analyze. To help those less fortunate and encourage conservation perhaps, there is a graduated charging structure. My marginal rate is listed as 14.7 cents per kwh, but then lots of taxes are applied to the various gradations. By dividing the delta final coat by delta usage on two adjacent month's bills, I discovered true marginal cost of 19.2. (Albuquerque, New Mexico)

Interesting info about power losses in the onboard charger, which the manufacturers should inform about in the specs, including which current is optimal to use in order to reduce the loss? Over time these losses accumulates to a lot of wasted kWh (1.5kWh/day x 360 days = 540 kWh/year), but of course nothing is 100%. Kia does not inform of how to best maintain the battery, is is best to charge with low current (properly more losses) or max current 14.5A and at what frequency (how many times can it be charged before it dies)? Kia Denmark guarantees, that the high voltage battery still has 70% capacity left after 7 years.
@CACars
@CACars 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, some info from Kia about that would be nice. And the warranty regarding degredation is really nice. Hyundai and Golf have the same. But there is a max mileage too, not just time.
