I had one as a hire car recently and drove it from Melbourne to Canberra return. It was a great little thing. Easily and happily sat on the speed limit and had no issue overtaking, though admittedly this was on a dual carriageway. At 185cm and 105kg, I'm no little slip of a person and had no issues being comfortable. I wouldn't hesitate to buy one if I needed a small city car.

@@therightcar. Agreed. I really enjoyed it. I think we can be hard at times with our expectations. Not so very long ago, we paid extra for air-conditioning and small automatics were 3 speed...4 speed if you bought the fuel injected engine or a Honda. In December 1990, I took delivery of a Daihatsu charade SG sedan. Manual with optional air. Power steering was standard. It was $17600. In the 34 years since, the equipment, safety and value equation has improved dramatically.

Got a GT-Line on order. We do lose out on a lot of stuff though. Compared to the KDM Kia Morning, Australia models don’t get the tyre pressure monitoring system, sun roof, heated/vented seats, heated steering wheel, keyless start, Kia Connect, wireless phone charging, shark fin antenna (due to lack of sat nav system), interior seat/trim colour choice, dual-level boot space, adaptive cruise control, electrochromic rear view mirror, climate control air con and ash tray. We also lose out on LED lighting for the rego plates and interior lights.

@cardinalnephew11 ай бұрын
@@therightcar Good point. I would at $28,000, but not 30. I think Kia Australia hit the sweet spot for pricing and features; would have loved some factory options (as opposed to just dealer-fit options). Our Kiwi neighbours get the push button start option included in their GT-Line for NZ$24.5K plus on roads. The only disappointment I have is that the colour I wanted (milky beige) isn't being offered down under. So I tried to get white and settled for green.

@cardinalnephew my wife has on order a sparkling silver GT Line. We could only see a sport at the dealer. We didn't ask a lot of questions but have seen mostly Korean reviews. I understood that some features, like sun roof, would not come to Oz. I am a bit disappointed to hear thete is no keyless start. I am spoilt with a Sorento GT Line. That's why my wife likes the features of the 2024 Picanto, a mini Sorento in her mind. She is going from a 2009 Suzuki Swift, so there are heaps of better features on the Picanto. Does the Picanto have keyless entry. And do you have to actually insert a key and twist it to start. The Suzuki at least has keyless entry and a knob to twist on the side of the syeering column. I am so lost when on rare occasions I use my wifes car....lol. We are in limbo at the moment for an ETA for the new car. I have read a ship carrying 1,000 Kias was returned to Korea due to an investation of stick bugs on the ship. I tracked that ship back to Korea, it was there a few days then went to San Francisco and now on its way to Mexico.......not sure if the mrs. car is on that ship. Kia rep cannot say anything.

I test drove the new 2024 Picanto GT-Line as an automatic back in April. Great little car. The gearbox was fine, would have been nice to drive the manual too. It did kind of run out of puff going up an on-ramp to a major arterial but it got there, it was with two in the car (me and the saleswoman). Parking was super-easy, and it just felt good to drive. When I booked the test-drive, I was wanting to buy a Picanto, but when the test-drive came around I had secured a fantastic second hand car so I didn't end up buying a Picanto - if I did, I would have gone for the Sport, with a 5-speed manual, which most likely would have had to have been ordered, because all stock coming in at the time were all automatic. The Picanto was pretty much the only new car I looked at, due to price yeah, but also because I really really liked it.

But even with good active safety techs, I’m concerned with safety in terms of structural integrity especially when colliding with a bigger, heavier car, having a difficult choice now.
@nigelbritton96411 ай бұрын
I had the previous model Picanto GT-Line until it was totaled (not my fault) Walked away without a scratch. Replaced it with the recently updated Mazda 2 Evolve which is expectedly in a different league, the Mazda is a size larger, bigger engine, better safety tech and more expensive. That said the Picanto has 4 wheel disc brakes and centre armrest/console (tiny as it is) on this up spec model which is more that can be said for the Mazda. Due to the poor global demand the turbo has been dropped which is a real shame as this updated Picanto needs all the torque it can muster as shown in this video.

We do get that 1 liter 3 cylinder overe here in Europe! Just without the turbo... If you find the 1.2 pretty slow, try that one as well. I haven't driven the Picanto but I have driven lots of Ups and Citigos which only have a 1 liter 3 cyl and it's good enough I'd say. You just gotta be mindful of that lazy power and if you rev it up high you might just surprise other drivers with more powerful cars! We do have the 1.2 as well and it's obviously more expensive but I'd say it's the best engine for the little car. More powerful than the 1.0 naturally aspirated but not as strained as the turbo one.

I had been considering a Picanto GT Line but have now decided against it. I was waiting on release of this 2024 model hoping it might get a five speed auto, push button start, privacy glass (as in NZ) and a few more goodies. Another negative is the ridiculously high service costs for this quite basic small car with nothing high tech in the engine department. Toyota and others have capped servicing costs in the couple of hundred dollar range, but Kia's servicing charges are in my opinion unjustifiable. Kia also describes the blind spot as blind spot assist. Is that the regular blind spot monitoring with golden glowing symbol in the wing mirrors or is it something different? Sorry Kia this car is not for me.
@therightcar11 ай бұрын
Yeah it’s still missing a few items, in the hope of keeping prices low and profits high. Yeah it’s blind-spot monitoring in the traditional sense, but the assistance thing is where it will steer the car (by braking) to avoid a potential incident.

One thing I find with your (other tall reviewers) reviews is your height. There is a misconception of their not being enough room in the back seat BUT if you think of shorter people, the front seat would be closer to the wheel therefore increasing rear leg room. My opinion is that if you use the car as per its design criteria (a city car) then you may well be more than satisfied with it. PS no criticism about your height. Final point; if your look at overseas models (called the Morning) you can see how Picantos here are really stripped out for the land of lesser is dearer.

Absolute shame that Kia Australia, unlike Kia New Zealand, put a 1980s key start and not a keyless push start in such a high-tech vehicle. You even have to fumble around and get the key fob out of the bottom of your trousers pocket, or bottom of your handbag, to press a button on it to unlock the car. Then, press the button on the key fob to make the key appear like a flick blade knife. Then, you can insert it in the ignition to twist and start. My wife's 15 year old Suzuki Swift had keyless entry and keyless start. Absolute shame how Kia Australia ruined this car by trying to save a few bucks to bring it under a certain price point. New Zealand knew better. About $50 more. If people can afford $23,990, they can afford $24,040. It is just a psychological matter. Why didn't Kia Australia offer the base price, but make it an option to pay extra for what I and my wife expect to be a standard feature on a top of the range modern car? Kia done away with the turbo for this model. Now, the keyless entry, why not sell it without windscreen wipers .......?

@lxlmx98 I can't see it would be ADR. Many other Kia models (my Sorento) are being sold with keyless entry, keyless start in Australia. I feel it was just some pitiful cost cut. There are plenty more features on this vehicle as sold in Korea and other Asian markets, but not here in Australia. Keyless entry/start is a basic essential these days, especially one that you would expect on a GT Line top of the range model. I say again, it is Kia Australia's fault that this item was omitted.

Yes?

Yeah, not a fan of all those "safety" systems. Especially the lane assist which is mandatory for all new cars in the EU! Screw that system sideways! And the brake assists as well, they only rake up the price.

Will KIA send it to ancap to crash ?
@therightcar10 ай бұрын
Kia isn’t paying to have it tested, but I’ve heard whispers that ANCAP is buying a heap of them to test… because of course, they love a “it didn’t score five stars!” headline

I own a Kia Picanto GT-Line (2022) and my biggest gripe with it is that it's a four-speed automatic we're lumped with here in Australia while in the UK, buyers get a five-speed automated manual transmission. It revs way too high at 110km/h and really needs a fifth gear as such high revs really do place unnecessary additional wear and tear on the engine and gearbox. That the bean counters at Kia have not seen fit to provide an automatic five-speed transmission gearbox option in the latest incarnation of the Australian Picanto is just criminal given our vast open highways with high speeds. Also, when you look at the versions on sale in South Korea and the UK, we here in Australia are given a pittance in terms of tech options - no push button start, no digital climate control, no heated front seats or steering wheel, no auto-stop for the engine, no shark fin antenna, no standard satnav, no wireless charging pad. I would not buy a Picanto again.

Still not as good as the VW up exclamation mark

Its other failing in the auto is a terrible lack of acceleration on a freeway. From 90km+ there is no zip. But...the manual overcomes that as you can drop the gear down but from 5th to 3rd as 4 also lacks the best ratio to accelerate. . 5th gear has no uphill acceleration of course. To order a manual means a wait.

I wouldn't put any passengers in the backseats. The lack of safety rating at the moment isn't good.
