Thanks for the education. My 2016 is in the shop for this very issue right now. Steering control arm broke while driving on surface streets (and NOT texting, btw!).

Anyone else notice he left the caliper hanging by the flex-line. Looks like you will have to replace your flex-lines 'mam'.

Yep, I instantly quit watching when I noticed he left the caliper hanging by the brake line. I’d be pissed if that were my car
@michaelebbs57873 жыл бұрын
Nothing wrong with calipers hanging by the flex lines, the line is made to handle much more pressure than just the weight of the caliper, how would it stop the car if it rips from few pounds?
@39knights3 жыл бұрын
@@michaelebbs5787 It's not the ripping and perhaps this one might survive. The inner lining is a plastic tube that if stretched (like when a heavy caliper is dropped); it will weaken the inner lining. Applying pressure is not the problem; it is the slight vacuum created when you release the pedal. This low pressure may cause the inner tube to collapse at a weak point like a valve and your caliper will behave as if it was seized. Supporting the caliper is just a 'best practice'.

Always support the caliper with a wire hook or bungee to keep the weight off the hose. The only exception is some calipers are aluminum, and once the pads and bracket are off, the caliper is very light weight. However for newbies, just support them all, to be sure. However you support it, make sure it doesn't fall, the impact of the hose catching the weight will damage the hose! If this happen, REPLACE THE HOSE.

come on dude you should know that you never hang brake calipers from the brake hose. also replacing bushings for surface cracks, seriously!! within 5000 miles all bushings will have these surface cracks as they dry out.

Very educational! Other than tire replacement and alignment (hard to do in my garage), I pretty much do my own car repairs. Could you give me an idea of how much mechanics make now a days? I need to figure something for when I grow up (not in literal terms...).

Technicians can make pretty good money these days provided that they are working at a good shop.

The Auto Shop, thanks for the reply. I’ve been considering an educational program I found for vets at a career fair leading to working for Hyundai. Sure it will be fairly simple especially since one of my cars is a Kia. I’ve also considered diesel engine mechanic for the railroad but that means I would have to move. Same with aircraft mechanic. Take care!

If you are in the area stop by and visit. I would be happy to show you around the shop and you could speak with some of our techs about the career. Good luck with your decision. I’m sure that you will make a great choice.

@@TheAutoShop , if I happen to make it that way I'll let you know, I definitely will stop by. You are only about three hours away from Shreveport. I just looked The Auto Shop on Google and did not realized how big of an operation your shop is. Somehow I accidentally bumped into one of your videos while watching other repair videos. Thanks you for the invitation and take care!

Why not stainless steel? Because it will almost last forever, and that is a problem. To make customers change more frequently use plastic parts instead.

2008 Kia Sportage LX 4 cylinder front wheel drive. Live in NE OH, lots of snow and road salt. It was having intermittent steering problems, basically loosing power steering from the belt slipping and squealing. Belt was totally worn out. Replaced all belts. Did flush (turn wheels lock to lock 5 times, fill, run vehicle for 10 seconds, return line to catch bucket, repeated, clean fluid in system). The reason for the this is you do not want to install a new power steering pump and use old fluid. And based on history we had no idea what fluid was in the system. Installed new PS pump just figuring the original had a lot of miles on it, and used a high quality belt. Used CARQUEST brand PS fluid (Meets performance requirements of: General Motors-GM9985010 (GM part #1050017); Ford-ESW-M2C128-CandD; Chrysler-MS-5932) . Kia does not have clear specs on PS fluid, except use dealer fluid. Power steering was working fine, with some minor squeal when wheel a full turn. A few months later it started to do the same things as before. Inspected belt and it was worn from slipping. Rack is leaking a bit with fluid in the passenger side boot. Boot around the steering column that connects to the rack appears to be in good shape with no cracks or dry rot. So I don't think the pump is bad, is only a few months old. So I am left with a bad rack or the universal joint is worn out. I am really trying not to guess and just throw parts at it. Any method to diagnose this issue? Or am I looking at just replacing both parts? Any input is appreciated, Thanks

Did you have to drop the k frame to get the rack and pinion out? I have a 13' sorento lifted and frame supported I think I'm gonna have to drop it sllightly. Sway bar also had to be loosed to get the rack and pinion under it

I have a 2011 Kia Forte LX and I trying to replace the rack and pinion. The rear motor mount bracket is made over the rack. I removed all the bolts but I can't remove the bracket to save my life. Does it require a crowbar or what to remove this bracket..?

Depending on which mount you are referring to you may need an engine lift.
