I used to sell cars, and thought I could definitely get a great price on the Rio. Then I left the dealership, went home and used the Costco website to get about $500 lower than what I had already negotiated. And then payed for it with pre-approved bank loan. I bought a 2013 Rio5 LX with A/T "out the door" for $16,150. Factoring in the cost savings of gas (vs my old vehicle), and no major repairs for 10 years/100,000 miles - this car payed for it's self.

I have a 2009 Kia Optima and so far, have had no problems at all. Kia and Hyundai seems like they have stepped up their game in the past few years and their cars are not only becoming more reliable, but also more attractive as well.

Hi Emme, Nice review on the 2012 Kia Rio. I am a loyal Kia driver that is currently driving a 2005 Kia Spectra 5. I purchased the Spectra 5 with only six miles on it and love this vehicle, with decent gas mileage and inexpensive maintenance you can't go wrong. Unfortunately my Spectra has met the extent of it's life and I am going to try and purchase a new 2012 or 2013 Rio. Wish me luck. :-D

Great review Emmy, especially the pothole riddled street. And the bloopers at the end are really enjoyable! BTW, any plans for a "long term" test of a KIA or any other car for that matter. That would be my biggest concern with any KIA, although they seem to be working hard to improve their brand.

There is something very likable about you on camera. There is one thing I would have liked to have seen in the review, road noise. How loud is the cabin noise in the city and interstate driving.I hate loud cars. I'm guessing it is pretty quiet or you have a really good microphone. Keep up the great work! You have a new fan!

I have owned the SX with the premium package now for 3 weeks. I am one of the handful that has one. I love this car. The premium package makes it so much better. I thought I would never use the sun roof but I open that sucker even on cold days,lol. The heated seats warm up quick and the Navigation ROCKS. It has lane assist which is awesome. Also the touch screen is very responsive. I got 3 months of Sirus/XM but don't like it much. I just stream Pandora from my phone thru bluetooth.

What a great little car this is! I took one for a spin and was very impressed overall. The engine is very peppy. The automatic is super smooth and responsive. The electric steering has good feel. The interior is quiet for a small car. The overall quality is stellar. Feels far more substantial and upscale than you'd expect. The salesman said it was priced at $19,900. I laughed. He said the best he could do is $100 over invoice. I laughed harder and walked away. Otherwise I would have bought it.

I own this car and there is a blind spot when using the rear view mirror they give you. I went to Walmart and bought a clip on that is 11" and now there is no blind spot. Visuals out the back window isn't a problem. The A pillars have never been an issue with me in the 4000 miles I have put on it already.
@roadfly12 жыл бұрын
Visibility out the back was fine, but you're right about the A pillars. They obstruct a little bit, especially in any long left hand sweepers. I think Kia thinks those little triangular windows solve the problem, but I never really used them. -Emme@RoadflyTV

I bought one in June of 2012, best car I've ever owned. KIA has really started shaping up, I thought they were just cheap and cheaply made cars. They are definitely cheap but definitely not cheaply made. My next car will probably be the same thing, just love the car.

I have no problem with mine. When backing out or trying to park on the street it has a backup camera. Also I have a 11" rear view mirror to see the blind spots.

Good review! I especially liked the ride on the crappy road versus yet another car review on nice, quiet, non-traffic roads. The one item I thought should have been mentioned though is the clear influence in looks/design throughout, at least IMHO, of the VW GTI, and the fact that the Kia's base price is $10K less than the GTI with more doors/room/etc... I also agree with Getched that the Chevy Sonic should be included in your comparison group as it is a very similar car in the same class.
@GearWave12 жыл бұрын
I enjoyed your review Emmy as always. The car looks sweet. My only concern would be its long term durability. What's the warranty on the Rio 5?
@youdollpete12 жыл бұрын
Nice review Em. Would you classify the interior as "pretty quiet" at speed? Seriously considering this car. Thanks.
@TheOneAndOnlyGnomeEggplant12 жыл бұрын
I bought this car and got the extended warranty for an extra $2000. Its now covered 100% basic, power tran, and roadside assistants with no deductible. They even give you up to $500 for hotel and food if it breaks down somewhere far from home.
@whorayful11 жыл бұрын
Friend just bought the base model here in Australia. It gets a 1.4Ltr EFI engine, not GDi. So it's a bit breathless on big hills but the ride comfort and equipment level is superb in such a small car, all I can say is that must have been a mother of a pot hole she hit in the road test, because we have some goat tracks of roads here in Adelaide and it doesn't buck around like that.

@AlternativeUses I sat in a Versa (didn't drive it) and found the seats to be too big. .not enough side bolster, and my ruptured disc in my back didn't like the poor lumbar. Materials cheap. Other than that, the automatic is a CVT and not a 6 speed, so that's a bit of an issue, too. I'm almost into my 11th year with a 2002 Rio Cinco. It's the most comfortable and trouble-free car I've owned in over 40 years, including Honda and Toyota. And this 3rd gen Rio is even better. It's a winner.

@holdenga I'm not Roadfly, but I've had my Kia Forte Hatch for a while now, and have had no issues with the car. Everything its still like the day I got it. Frankly you've got nothing to worry about with the warranty and the fact that they give you free roadside assistance too for 5 years.

@palebeachbum12 жыл бұрын
Based on my experience, looking out the rear window was like looking through a porthole. The rear window seems very small. There are huge blind spots. I assume this is why Kia offers the Versa with the optional back up camera.

The car drives really good and pass's car on the highway with no problems. Also I have no problem zipping up the hills in San Francisco. With the hills it can be an issue when stopped on one that is really steep with most cars but this one has Hill Stop Assist. You take your foot off the brake and it just sits there until you hit the gas. I got the extended warranty for an extra 2g's so its covered 100% with road side assistant for 10 years/100,000 miles. Do yourself a favor and get this car :)

Really enjoy your reviews and thanks for sitting in the rear as you see exactly how.much thigh support with the head room. It wouldn't have that headroom without the seat installed so low.I wouldn't want to put anybody there with knees in chest for any length of time. Strickly for kids. Love the looks and warranty, but my choice would be elsewhere in this category - I would take a "real manual" Mazda 2 or Fiesta over this one (IMO).
