Why do people always assume "city cars" can't do long road trips? I don't get it. They're just as good for long trips and shouldn't be relegated to this weird city car category.

I bought my Polo 250 about a 1000km away from my city, and drove it back with no issues. Comfortable and quiet.

Consistent long road trips with a few folks in the car aren't going to be an issue.... if you're the driver/owner. But after a couple of such trips, your backseat passengers will start to hate you. Better not put anyone you truly love back there. Mild acquaintances only.

Exactly, I have a Polo TSI (128PS) here in Brazil and drive at least 3 times a year from São Paulo to Rio (460km) and back to visit my family. If you want more space, VW Brazil has developed the Virtus (Polo Sedan 8cm more wheelbase) and Nivus (Polo Crossover) or T-Cross, based on Virtus not Polo.

I've done a 1300km trip (650 + 650) once or a twice a year for 8 years with a freaking 2012 Citroen C1. Never had a problem.

Should have mentioned servicing costs too, I had a 2018 Polo and paid $800 for a 30k service! I noticed the Rio has 7 years warranty and called serving too, to me THATS unbeatable in this class

Unfortunately, being a VW, long-term reliability is almost guaranteed to be an issue with the Polo. Buyers in this segment for whom such a purchase is going to be their only car out of budgetary necessity, are far more likely to keep their vehicle for many years. At least compared to buyers shopping above this segment. When it comes to that, the RIO with it's above average warranty ends up looking like the more sensible choice over the Polo.

The VW will break down much sooner than that (only 3 years warranty because the manufacturer doesn't have any confidence in its product made in Brazil, China, Spain, or South Africa).

I like my 2013 Yaris pretty well, with good mileage, zippy handling, and manoeuvrability in city car parks. And by the way, here in the real world, I'm perfectly happy taking it on 800 km per day road trips, two-up. If I was buying today, it would be the Kia all day. The 7 year warranty and capped price servicing are a big deal. The Suzi is cramped and undercooked; and the Polo is too expensive, with reliability and Dieselgate being question marks.

The swift is the biggest car out of all of them and the polo isn’t too expensive, the Yaris is. The polo has the most tech and it’s by far the fastest but if you want a small car it would be close between a Mazda 2 and the polo. Also the only reason Kia has such long warranty is because of how unreliable their cars are. What you are saying is that Japanese cars aren’t as good as Korean ones, which is just outrageous. It isn’t very hard to get a 5 star ancap safety rating, but the Kia can’t even do that. Polo has all of the safety features on its cheapest model as well. Best car in this class = Polo

Today I purchased a 2022 Kia Rio s. You call these Citi cars or small cars but this is the only car I need to have. I only wished here in the United States they would have the Volkswagen Polo or the Suzuki Swift for better buying options. Automakers like toyota, hyundai, have discontinued their fit, accent, and Yaris. Instead, they're offering small SUVs like the Hyundai venue. I feel like for a smaller carb where people can buy cars instead of buying a used one.

It seemed here in the US, they are dropping the small subcompact cars for small City type SUVs. But I am thankful that I purchased a 2022 Kia Rio s here in the United States.

Was no surprise that the VW would be the winner here, since it has a more luxurious interior and perhaps practicality wise better however I will not say it is more fun or more dynamic than the Suzuki Swift, I use to own the previous Swift and I loved how it drives, the Kia is like Meh, for me the new Hyundai i20 is better looking and drives better than the new Rio and lets be honest, the Rio needs an update.

It probably drives like a dream like all VWs, it looks great, like all VWs and the interior is classy and won't date, like all VWs. It's also a VW in terms of reliability and after sales service. I've been burnt three times by VW's appalling customer service (Australia and Germany) and that's before factoring in Dieselgate, where they were totally exposed as frauds. I understand why it features in the top 3, but a VW should never win if you truly care about customer welfare. Perhaps VW pays CarAdvice big bucks and pampers its reviewers? You betcha.

@@rongambol9910 Ha Ron. My Golf had an engine failure at under 50,000km and because the warranty period was over they weren't interested. After the repair the engine failed again. VW grudgingly replaced the engine. Then 4 years later the very well known mechatronics issue occurred without warning whilst driving. Thankfully not on a freeway. VW Germany and VW Australia failed to come good with this repair despite the issue being well known. I'm keeping this lemon until the next issue arises and then I'll scrap it. A company is only as good as the service it provides when there are major issues. I would never touch a VW Group product again, and that includes Audi and Skoda. Did I mention the greatest automotive fraud in history? That's a moral reason to boycott these parasites. Kia, Toyota or Hyundai will be my next choice.

This iteration of the VW Polo is ugly and what are all those"punch outs" in the bodywork? My next car could well be the Kia Rio - I have decided that the Picanto is too small. The mark 5 Polo is a contender, but I think I will get more for less with the Kia.
