In the 80s we put together a vehicle engine with a major scared up cylinder wall. And that engine had constant oil smoke, but the guy drove it for like 4 years after. It was much worse than what you are faced with. I really enjoyed this video. Very cool.

Hi Jason I have a 97 Sportage, thank you so much for all your videos. Even with the service manuals, your knuckles and arms took one for the team and led the way. Thanks to you Ive replaced the Valve cover gasket, then radiator and ac system, water pump/timing belt replacement. and just now buttoning it up from replacing the injectors fuel filter, and degrease the engine bay after taking off upper and lower intake manifold. So thank you thank you thank you. So here is the question. I live in the Bay Area and am basically taking my time to turn this one in for "Cash for Clunkers" . But Im taking automotive classes soon, and should be able to get other daily wheels. So Im thinking for a low risk learning opportunity on a vehicle nearing its reliable end, what kind of rebuild would be better for an amateur. Piston, Rings, all seals, rebuild kit, Or trying to find a cheap cheap machine shop that will bore and hatch...... then get reman valves er whatever is cheapest but full refurbish. Once again, on a vehicle that would need to run at end but have no other needs but to drive itself to the shredder, with no more that 2 break down stops. ;-). Im 44 and have worked ever so highly on my vehicles before. Im really looking into specializing in a small private shop, in hybrids and ev's

the mark is on the belt driving portion of the crank. behind the 6 holed plate the harmonic wheel attached to. Edit: I see you found it. Putting valve cover on early a mistake, notice the cam gears have 2 slots, so cam gears can be E or I and 180 out of sync, if you have not orient them initially for no. 1 cylinder. Lobes facing opposite. Great vid. I work on my 2001 Kia Rio 1.5L all time. Front wheel drive 5 speed, even less room as timing is against right fender wall. Pita, but trying to keep the car alive as it was parting gift from my mom before she passed away. Subscribed

Thanks for the video I am doing the water pump on my brother 1999 Kia Sportage and changing timing belt to and I couldn’t get the timing marks to the timing cover marks and plus the belt tensioner was set wrong the spring was not getting any tension the spring was loose my brother bought the Kia used I think the owner had this Kia repair and the mechanic did not put the timing chain correct and maybe that’s way there was a computer code of misfire in cylinder one this video helped allot

I love your vids man!Greatly explained!I have a question.I'm going to buy a E46 coupe and going to install CNG injection kit.Can you tell me the best engine for CNG conversion.I was thinking of M43 because it's timing chain and sohc.What i'm worrying is the special air intake manifold that has two paths for air flow to go.I don't know where on the manifold to install the cng injectors.

Any tips on finding the downstream O2 sensor would be greatly appreciated as you can't get a Haynes or chiltens on it and any tips you have on a vibration I get doing 75-80mph (not on the steering wheel just in the drive line, maybe a u joint) I appreciate your time

Hey man I have an e46 and I just change the expansion tank on it I saw your video on how to do it .. my upper radiator hose there's steam coming out of it this was happening when I had the old expansion tank on it .. should I replace the upper hose please help thanks in advance I also notice that there was blue silicon inside the upper hose

On the exhaust side of the head, towards the front of the engine, there is a recessed hex bolt... Is that a coolant plug/port?

What does this kind of rebuild cost. My 07 kia sportage had a timing belt break going down the interstate and I was told it has an interference motor and that it was likely damaged?? Any thoughts ??

Do you have a final thought on where all that oil in the intake was coming from? PCV?

Sorry I didn't realize that I didn't cover that in the video. I didn't see any oil in the upper intake or the upper part of the lower intake where it meets the upper intake (I'm talking about the insides of it here). I only saw the oil right at the very edge of the inside of the lower intake where it meats the cylinder head. I have to conclude that maybe the intake manifold gasket wasn't sealing quite correctly and oil leaking from the valve cover gasket was getting in there some how. It's just a theory though. I didn't otherwise see anything wrong!

Most likely. This is a very common issue on Nissan 3.5. Tons of oil in the intake coming from PCV. Many are installing oil catch cans.

Hey what’s going on 50s kid I have a 2002 Kia Sportage I replace the cylinder head because the old one cracked I put everything back together I’m pretty sure I put everything back correctly maybe something came loose but I am poppy my engine amp fuse 15 have any ideas what it could be I kind of think something might’ve broke in the harness it is a little old

isn't this an interference motor? with the center pistons being at the top do the valves hit/make contact with them when you're adjusting the timing like that 39:08 ?

Strangely enough it ISN'T. It's a copy of a mazda motor. I saw a Kia Rio 2004 and looked it up on Wikipedia and it's only 90hp but it is also a mazda copy non interference motor (possibly the exact same one or same engine smaller bore). Strange thing how multiple of the early kias had mazda copy engines and they turned out to be fantastic engines.

I would have at least tried to hone the top 95 percent of each cylinder from the top. I once saw a guy replace rings on a toyota corolla by removing the connector rod caps from the bottom of the engine then pull the pistons out from the top while the block was still in the car.

lineartechbd1600 yeah I was thinking about that but this engine has oil squirters that would have potentially been damaged by the hone so I didn't want to try

Copper grease on spark plugs is a big mistake. Use engine oil or silver grease. Sorry for the bad english :-)

Aluminum + copper = electric cell. This can cause oxidation of aluminum (corrosion) The manufacturer recommends a silver paste or engine oil. I always use engine oil + 28Nm. I never had a problem. You are making super movies. Regards.

I personally would have put the belt on before the valve cover so you could set the cams by watching the cam lobes. But that is just me. I really appreciate your vids though. I am currently working on my brother's 01 Sportage and your vids are helping me a great deal.
