My buddy's wife called with her daughter's '06 VW Jetta throwing a light for the VVT - said the light would go out when it warmed up. I asked, "When was the last time you changed the oil?" The answer was, when I did it last ... a year earlier, LOL. My buddy changed the oil and the light went out for good. :) Great vid! Reminds us to check the basics. Thanks!

It just needed a longer dipstick James! It's not hard for folk to check their oil & water once a month. I see this alot!

If you even have a dipstick anymore. When I first heard they were taking them off motors, I thought it was a joke.

Good info James. I'm glad you posted this since I've been wondering if some cars control the phasers in park and others don't. Ivan just did a phaser/chain repair on an Equinox and it controlled in park as well. Don't understand why but at least I now know that it can work that way. Thanks!

+Baxrok2 u know what the video title was? I have a suzuki cx7 that has the gm 3.6l and 3 cam crank correlation codes that I think is chain stretch. But I have no experience with those yet

My check engine light cleared for awhile after changing the oil but came back on, would be the VVT Solenoid perhaps? I got pretty much the same vehicle in the video same color and all.

Value timing control codes from lack of maintenance super common.

Had a Hyundai from another shop with a knock sensor code and failed emissions.They installed 2 knock sensors and an O2 sensor trying to fix the problem. It was clattering when i started it and had very little oil in it. An oil change, ran the monitors, passed emissions. Today's techs forget the basics.
@jamesdanner78507 жыл бұрын
+wysetech2000 nice. I remember a long time ago when Paul was starting his diagnosing, he had the vantage before I did. I was messing with this Toyota that wouldn't start but after it stopped cranking over it would run backwards for 15 seconds. We both spent a good hour on igf, igt, primary and secondary waves. All my prodding.. finally he said..Did u ever pull a spark plug? Duhhhh. Worn so bad even the negative electrodes were gone. So much raw fuel in the exhaust, when it would backfire, it totally sucked from the exhaust and belched out the air cleaner

good greif that was low I'm curious if you have an opinion about fleet oils not necessarily concerning vvt engines but in general great video thanks for showing us
@jamesdanner78507 жыл бұрын
+James Kmenta not to familiar with the term fleet oils ,but if u actually change the oil 3 to 4k miles ,I think oil is oil. If u have a specified weight or one specifically requiring synthetic or the dexos stuff. I use it

2014 Chevy Traverse only calls for oil to be changed once a year... How much oil will be left at one year?
@jamesdanner78507 жыл бұрын
+Thor7167 not enough to keep the chain guides lubricated enough is my guess

@NCPDFSB7 жыл бұрын
what does it take for the oil light to come on? zero lubrication?
@cojones85187 жыл бұрын
I call it the "Replace Engine Light". By the time it comes on the damage is usually done. Usually the pickup tube has to be sucking air before the light comes on.
@kdautomotive11657 жыл бұрын
NCPDFSB depends on if the car has a oil level sensor or not.
@jamesdanner78507 жыл бұрын
+NCPDFSB seriously. It's hard to believe that it doesn't come on. Part of me thinks that the vvt codes popping up ( the ones that people actually bring in to have looked at) are actually saving engines from totally running out

Suprises me how people do not check/change their damn oil.
@jamesdanner78507 жыл бұрын
+Mr. Bob Dobalina I know. It's to a point now that I drain every bottle from oil changes I do into a jug so I have clean top off oil to use. Surprisingly that jug fills up quick just draining "empty"bottles. We check the oil on every car before it leaves no matter what service, and sooooo many have nothing on the stick. And usually the bill is done and we could lose 5 bucks or more on free oil just to protect the customer. That starts adding up quick

I had a quick question. What scan tool are you using here? I'm asking because I'm looking a buying a nice new scan tool and It's hard to find out information on what's all available. Trying to find a good model older used tool but also have a couple years of future proofing and support with updates before having to replace it.
@jamesdanner78507 жыл бұрын
+hobbles wolf it's a snap on solus ultra. It's a few models back from the newest and best but it's fully updatable to the newest.and does everything the new ones do as far as tests and info. Just not windows based with wifi and links to shop key and all that stuff .. But updates can be as much as a thousand bucks. I got mine used from a snap on dealer updated to 15 for 1500. Then they just had a promotion where they updated to the 16.4 and u get the 17.2 free when it comes out .. which is now. For 575

Kia software engineers designed the system to turn off the check engine light after each key cycle. I have had major faults where the vehicle went into limp mode. Cycle the key and the code is only in memory light out. I strongly disagree with their logic.
