I taught my daughter to drive a stick but I made her use an automatic to test for her license. I don't think she ever drove an automatic again. Next I taught her to power shift and double clutch. She got the hang of it pretty quick. She can even explain why this is not hard on the transmission unless you are stupid and do it like a damn idiot. As you can imagine I'm very proud of her but I do wish she wouldn't show off her advanced skills just to humiliate the poor fellas.

You make electric start sound like it's some terrible thing. Once you're stuck on a steep hill in 100 degree heat sweating your balls off its nice to have a ln electric start. Especially if you are short like I am. Although I agree that to have a bike with no kickstand backup is stupid.

I see what your saying but the thing is... if u have electric start and a kickstart. would you rather just push a button or pull the kickstart out and then kick until it starts? I like the kickstart more than electric start. The problem is that people are getting used to electric start and then once companies find out more people like it then they start just adding electric start and not kick start...

A lot of the issues people have with kickers is that, like you said, it needs to be tuned properly or you’re gonna wear yourself out. Also, the advances in electronics in the last 25 years means that a bike with extra features such as full lighting, batteries, electric starters, fuel injection and so on can be produced more cost effectively, be reliable, and be more compact and lightweight than an older kick only bike. I have 250r like that one and its a pussycat, but I wouldn’t mind an electric leg on a flooded out 650r after a few hours riding.

Hermit DaVlog i was born on the year 2000 and i just love old school and classic bikes. They just have that authenthic motorcycle charm to it. The bike i'll be riding will be a 400cc classic bike that has a kickstart and is carbureted just like the good days. Sportsbikes are awesome and fast, i would like to get my hands on it someday but it lacks soul. Awesome the video btw, very informative and short. The way that it should be

I loved the E ride start comment! It's true, the other day I was thinking about replacing my Pathfinder but it's almost impossible to find a vehicle with a manual transmission. I've already switched my Mustang and Camaro from auto to manual transmissions my next project is a five speed swap in my motorhome. I didn't realize that my WR 250 R didn't have a kickstart until after I bought it. I'm going back to old-school. The XR your riding is awesome !

matty d I was born in 97'. I only have old wood and metal guns, Bike without computers that are carburated and kickstart. Most of my bike and ATV's were 1980's bikes. That's what I grew up on. I don't like computers or automatic transmission because they are bullshit and people who use them are cancer. I was suppose to buy a new dirt bike for the first time in my entire life but they're all with this fancy launch control and stuff that makes me sick to look at and they don't make dual sports like they use to either. I really want a Honda steel frame and engine dual sport that's at least 400cc but they don't make them anymore. Just the 650 but I want something like an XR400 or XR500. I'd settle for a 250 but it's fuel injected and doesn't have a kick start. Then I thought I'd try Yamaha but same shit so now I'm just gonna settle for a DR-Z400 Suzuki. The DR-Z is perfect, carburated and kick start conversion kit isn't to hard to install I hear.

Surprised I have to say this, but E-start is less of a pain in the Ass, that's why many people from all generations prefer it!?!. Kick doesn't make you more of a man, in fact, thinking it does is the mentality of a child... However, kick start isn't as bad as many people think it is so this Video does have a point.
@HermitDaVlog
@HermitDaVlog 7 жыл бұрын
I have bikes with both, so I'm not avoiding e-start bikes, but I have an issue with my friends who won't touch a kicker just because it's a kicker. Never had a kicker need a battery charged or a push start so that's my preference.

Been riding since i was 5 with my whole family. Mom, pop, sister, me. And we had our close group of really good family friends who were all also riders. Went out every so often with the trailers and bikes, had our weekends out in the deserts. Were the best times of my life. But since i was so young, i wasnt strong enough to kickstart my little CRF50, so my dad always had to do it for me. But id always give it a solid few goes before i finally let my dad do it. And i remember the day that i had finally kickstarted my bike for the first time. Remember visually where we were and everything. We went out for the weekend, and on a ride together we stopped outside a local track to watch the riders. And once we decided we had our fills, i had to start my bike since we were sitting there. So after 3 good kicks i managed to turn her over, turn around and ride away. But it was one of the best feelings ever for little 5 year old me. Had some of the best times of my life out on two wheels in the desert with some great friends. I'd give anything to have that again.

It’s electric and kick ( altho I’ve never kicked it).. it was parked so long the clutch plates are stuck and the clutch lever has no tension! Also the battery is dead. I’m just curious if with the key on choke open and in neutral it will start with the kickstart? Any advice how I can get her fired up before purchasing a new battering and cleaning up the clutch plates? Thx

Whats the point of having a kick start when you can have an electric start? Its not like it takes skill to kick start. The only difference between kick and electric is a small electric motor is spinning the engine and not your leg.
@HermitDaVlog
@HermitDaVlog 6 жыл бұрын
On modern bikes it's about 9lbs difference and much more on older bikes. The bigger problem is your battery or starter motor are one more point of failure and if they fail way out in the middle of the woods or desert you're not in as good a situation as if you have a kick start. The real point here is that there are just a lot of really cool old bikes that are kick start only and people shouldn't overlook them just for that reason.
@urmomsahoe1
@urmomsahoe1 6 жыл бұрын
Well you can still clutch start a electric start bike so i dead battery isn't a huge deal. I dont think having a kick start stops many people from owning an older bike. I think its more of the fact that its an older bike and some people want to ride a bike they dont have to worry about making sure the carb is adjusted correctly.

If you have ever tried roll starting a "big" 4 stroke like a WR450 on gravel you will understand why you need a kick start... Walking home for hours when the battery or started die (wich is guaranteed to happen at worst moment in middle of nowhere) is not fun i can tell you.

Damn all you old people just reject technology. An electric start/automatic transmission is not a bad thing and It definitely is a nice feature, but I agree that it is not a deal breaker. Plus, you have it backwards. Millennials didn't ruin stick shifts, car manufactures switched to automatics and millennials had no reason to learn a stick because manufacturers offered automatics almost exclusively.

Hermit DaVlog Automatics have been around way before all the millennials. And Don't get me wrong, I love my 5 speed manual '94 GMC Sierra, but I certainly don't hate automatics either and blame shit on younger generations by saying that because we accept technology we ruined everything. Plus, you can still buy stick shifts and kick start bikes, you just have the option to get a different type of tranny or starting system.

My current bike is actually a 83 honda xl250r similar to this bike. Very easy to kick because it has a decompression lever . I have flooded it by dropping it many times and I have found the quickest and painless way to get it going again is to actually shut off the petcock at the gas tank give it a few normal kicks then hold wide open throttle and kick it usually starts very easily no matter how bad I flooded it. I think because I have an accelerator pump carburetor it will drain the excess gas in the float very quickly with the petcock off.

A starting sequence is like foreplay, don't do it right and you ain't going riding ;) Another trick for a flooded motor is to lean the bike over and drain the excess fuel from the carb to kick loose the float bowl. Great video bro! I feel uneasy riding a bike without a kicker.

Great video! i had a question. i have a KTM 250xcf-w (the four stroke one) with a 280 big bore kit in it. The bike starts first kick with choke always when cold but when the bike gets hot it doesnt want to start. There is no de compression lever on the bike so how would i get the gas in the motor to cool it down? would i open the throttle with the gas on and press down the kick start then turn the gas off and drain it then turn the gas back on and try to start it? also would it be wise to spend some money and get an oversize radiator and super cooler since it has the 280 kit with stock water pump and stock radiator?
@HermitDaVlog
@HermitDaVlog 7 жыл бұрын
I'm not an expert especially when it comes to KTMs, but first thing I'd try is just kicking it anyway with the throttle wide open. I believe the decomp does little more than making it easier to kick it around and keeping it from starting.

Great video. I currently own two XR250Ls one a1991 and a1992 since new. The RFVC engines if maintained are indestructible. One thing I didn't hear mentioned in the cold start procedure was DON'T TOUCH THE THROTTLE! If you as much as put your hand on the throttle you will flood the engine and have to go through the process of clearing fuel out of the engine. That is gas off, ignition off, throttle wide open and kick the engine through a couple of compression cycles. I don't know if your owners manual states this procedure as it looks like a much later XR250 than mine but the above starting and clearing procedure is in my owners manual.
