This is insane (insanely awesome)! I thought rescues on lifts were normally done by rappelling people straight down to the ground, this is obviously WAY cooler.

+WestcoastWheelman Yup I work up a Kicking Horse. They've been rehearsing rappelling straight down all throughout the summer but there are some REALLY high up spots on that chairlift and the heli evac was the better option I suppose

Wow, that was so sick. Watched it years ago already. Ich was an exchange student that year in Golden and had just left the mountain before the gondola stopped working. Otherwise I would have been rescued too. Such a bummer. Most of the guys were actually rescued by rope, but that gondola was too high up the ground and in a rough terrain. You were lucky to be in the exact spot and the hours of waiting were well worth it. Cheers

Why was the Gondola down? Too big of cross winds? We got stuck at the top of Big White (backside) chair for 1.5 hours in -20 (-32 w/wind). So cold and only 30' from getting off. Worse was getting off at 5:45 in December. It was pitch black. They told us to make our way to the bottom of the hill (without lights) to catch the next chairlift (that they started up 30 minutes after we got there) to the front side. Finally got to the bottom of the frontside at 7:30. Thankfully the frontside was lit. Got free pass, but not Heli ride.

Nuts... They should have had ski patrol under the gondola, lowered them out of the gondola (or repelled), and tossed their board or skis out. Then they could ski down. Instead they took them to the top of the mountain in a more risky and costly trip, and they STILL have to get down the mountain without a board/ skis. The gondola is broken, so I guess they tracked them down in a cat? If you are flying them, why not to the bottom? Who is running this rescue...

I think you might be able to drop that far and not break anything, but I can only speak qualitatively by comparing the leg-breaking distance of solid ground to this situation. You were right not to jump though.

+Scotty Catman Snow can be as hard as the ground dude. When it gets warm it melts and then freezes at night creating a layer of ice. Plus that snow under them looks groomed. Probably would have at the very least broken a leg from jumping.

Pride Lion You think that thin-ass layer of ice is going to do a whole lot? It's not the fall that kills you, it's the sudden stop. If you hit the ice, it's just going to break right through. Might even be better to have the ice if the snow is not that thick. It's VERY high up... really, Madam Smellypits ? No shit. You can jump off a 170 foot ledge into water and not be injured. So, were there two gondola passengers on that rescue ride? Was the one on camera a kid? Was the helicopter returning to the gondola to pick up someone else? How many were rescued that day? Did the resort pay for the drinks after the helicopter rescue?

+Bryon Lape Normally they rappel down off the gondola, but there are some sections that are just too high for that to be safe. The helicopter is only used in extreme situations like that.

+Adam Sherman The distance to the ground is too great to rappel, some spots are really really high up. Also would have to know that the customers were able to ski out, some locations are just too hard to then get the customer down.
