We got to throw the Ray-Bans on Joseph Harrison, and along the way, you can hear him smooch to one, which brought us to the topic of why he smooches instead of kicks as his first choice to add a little forward velocity to his horses.

My uncle always taught me smooch for speed and spurs for movement, so it’s always something I’ve practiced, but just starting in team roping, so this was great info to let me know it equates into it as well

Agreed. Completely. Most people use spurs like a weapon. Lateral movement is what a spur is designed for. Spurring will actually take the run out of your horse. Make them dull and resentful if that's how you're trying to get them to run.

My wife and I were just talking about this exact thing the other day! Thank you for sharing this with all of us. I really admire how guys like Joseph and Trevor and Miles ride their horses so correct and try to stay out of their way through the run. A lot to be learned just watching and listening!

Good video. I don't wear spurs on my horse. An older gentleman told me years ago that most people are terrible at using spurs and if you teach your horse where it's supposed to be and let them enjoy their job spurs are more hindrance than help. When I start training a horse I have spurs on but they're the last step in the communication process, the yell so to speak. The softer cues, communication, you can use to get your horse to respond the easier your part of the job is. IMO

Big difference, when your roping slow cattle and fresh cattle … and another difference how you ride in a practice pen and competition… but good tips and advice thanks

Man, you can go back and watch the vids when Joseph is heeling the fresh steers or pretty much any of his competition runs, and he does exactly what he talks about in this video. Like Trevor says… the best practicers are the best gamers.
