You just have to break the pin on the right where the switch is, you just making more of a misson with it. Grab your key or something pointy and push down the whole to your right down switch, move the switch down and that’s it lol

Why do smoke alarms have self-destruct switches like these?

It is a model with a permanent non-replaceable battery. The switch will turn the unit off and discharge the battery, so the unit no longer beeps and the battery get rids of its energy. So it is safe to dispose of the unit.

Mine has a red light that flashes once every 30 or 40 seconds. I also expected it to flash more often.

The instructions are really unnecessary and just more difficult to be honest. You just have to break the tab. You can use any sort of screwdriver or anything strong/firm/won’t break and push down on the white bar behind the switch on the right. Then you can just slide it over - no problem.
