U hv to imagine all the footage we’ve lost! It’s very sad. I FB friended a former LSU teammate n he said he’s not sure LSU has any game tapes left. In college he was a TRUE NATIONAL sensation n every kid emulated him. Imagine to the sheer WORK RATE to AVERAGE 45 points/game with no 3 pt line! The hustle alone was super human, but factoring in the creative flow n flair of how he got the points or made the passes n u hv someone who fills arenas!! When I was young in the 60s/70s, basketball games on TV were so boring n poorly attended u could hear all the squeaks of the sneakers on the floor! The drill videos he made after he retired n would do camps for kids. U can see the all online. My favorite is him at the foul line throwing the ball HARD at each side of the backboard but around his back! So right hand, around back to left side of the rim, catching with left hand, around his body to the right side of the rim n repeating!!!

People gotta remember Pistol simply was not allowed to do what modern guys like Kyrie do. Pistol had to have his hand on top of the ball at all times when dribbling. It’s easy to say “drop Kyrie into the 50’s/60’s and he’d look like a wizard” like some say - everything Kyrie does would not be allowed back then at all. Pistol was phenomenal

In Pete's era, you weren't allowed to carry/palm the ball on EVERY dribble like you can today. he had to actually learn to dribble a basketball. I can't imagine what he would have created if had been able to take advantage of today's rules.

Yep. You could get away with defensive body and hand checking back in the 70s. Pete would be unreal in today's NBA.

Some info for you. The Pistol Pete skills videos (when he's wearing the blue warm up pants and white shirt), those were made after Pete had retired so he's in his Mid to late 30's. As far as how he can control the ball, when he was a young boy (grade school age) he would go outside, in the rain on a gravel driveway and practice dribbling. He figured if he could control the ball in those conditions, in the gym would become easier. Besides natural athletic ability he he worked harder than anyone else to develop the skills we see. A lot of the drills Pete used to train he developed himself.

He was the first player to make $1,000,000 contract. He was addicted to drugs and was lit through out most of his career found Jesus and remained sober. He was running a Christian Basketball camp when he had a heart attack and died on the floor.
