Kidneys are the most important part of our bodies and low kidney functioning causes kidney failure. The main purpose of kidney failure diet is to keep the levels of electrolytes, fluids and minerals balanced in body but when a person has kidney failure the levels of creatinine and other waste material in the body increases. A kidney patient must decrease the use of salty foods, adjust protein intake, limit foods high in potassium and manage fluid intake.
Patient with kidney failure have different diet needs. Diet of every patient needs to be individualized depending on tendency to retain or lose salt and serum levels of protein, potassium and overall nutritional status. Limiting food and drink can help you to cut down the workload of kidneys to maintain kidney function.
Patient with kidney failure needs to follow protein-free diet. Benefits of protein restricted diet include improved proteinurea, controls the blood pressure and slowdowns the progression kidney failure. Limit high protein foods such as eggs, fish, dairy products and meats.
Performing yoga on regular basis, switching to kidney failure diet can help to control diabetes and blood pressure levels. Patient can perform breathing exercises like Kapalbhati, pranayama and anulom vilom to improve the function of kidneys and further prevent from kidney failure.
Low potassium fruits and vegetables are recommended to patients with kidney failure. To reduce potassium content, vegetables need to be leached. Patient must restrict High potassium fruits like avocado, dates, banana and kiwi along with high potassium rooty and leafy vegetables like potato, sweet potato, arbi, beetroot, turnip, spinach cauliflower, methi, cabbage and coriander. But patient can take Brinjal, tomato, ladyfinger, green chilli, and bottle gourd, round gourd, cucumber, peas, parwal and karela.
Sodium plays an important role in maintaining high blood pressure as it also reduces swelling in legs, feet and ankles. Patient must also avoid packed food, sauces, cheese, soups, popcorn and salted pickles as they have high sodium content. Restricting sodium in diet can help in kidney functioning and prevent a patient from dialysis or transplant.
