The long hair kid, it took me some time, but... i actually like him, and why? well... he's the stereotypical kid going through puberty, everything sucks, except for what he likes, and nobody understands him because of reasons. He's one of those kids who, when you say, hey kid, this is great, he will automatically dislike it, just because you like it. BUT.. the fun part about FBE is... they keep these kids around for a loooong time, and eventually, when they are old enough to move to the next "level", they get confronted with their early react videos, and i for one, cannot wait to see him in one of those, see how he looks back on his bored puberty days, when everything sucked and only he knew, what was good music (the kind that doesnt use real instruments... still laughing about that one personally ;) )

But as a musician, I now have appreciation for many different genres and artists and find new ways to implement them into my music. Listening to new genres just makes you a better musician and songwriter.

As someone who is a long-time fan of Bon Jovi, it made me somewhat sad to see this reaction from the kids. I agree that the hairstyles and clothes in the 80s were ridiculous, but I feel like they focus on that, instead of the music. I've been to a Bon Jovi concert and I can say that Jon really knows how to interact with a crowd. Even though his voice has changed through the years and Richie Sambora quit the band, he can still get a crowd excited and singing along to every word.

Bon Jovi are so much more than just the hits. "Homebound Train" from the album New Jersey and "Hook Me Up" from Bounce come close to metal in their sound, the guitar solos on "Dry County", "Next 100 Years", and the live version of "Any Other Day" are amazing, and the entirety of the album These Days, the darkest album they've done to date, is simply stunning. The chorus of the title track of that album is so fun to sing along to. Have a Nice Day also has some gems, such as "Welcome to Wherever You Are", "Bells of Freedom", and the rare bonus track "These Open Arms".

Like again, what does Priest have that Bon Jovi doesn't? Bon Jovi sold more records than Priest ever dreamed of, and played the same events as Priest, and never has Jon split from the band. Yes he did solo work, but he never left the Band unlike Rob Halford. And their new material from 2000 to now has sold more than Priest ever could. So again, why Priest deserve it more than Bon Jovi?
@GermanLeftist
@GermanLeftist 7 жыл бұрын
Bon Jovi deserves to be in the Hall of Fame, but Judas Priest deserves it more. They were way more influential to music in general by defining the metal genre like no other band. They took what Black Sabbath gave the world and turned it into what we'd call metal today before bands like Iron Maiden and Def Leppard came along during the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. But that's beside the fact. Bon Jovi still is a pretty good band that unjustly gets shit for their hit singles without a lot of people paying attention to their actual albums. And I think most people would even agree that Bon Jovi deserves way more to be in the RnR HoF than a lot of the non-rock related artists (and even some rock-related ones) that already are inducted or are not going to get inducted with them. Making it even more of a travesty that Judas Priest hasn't been inducted yet.

People like to shit on Bon Jovi because they're overplayed and cheesy, but haven't actually heard their discography to make a true picture of his quality and make solid arguments. Their music catalogue is huge and diverse, and almost all of it is seriously amazing. Like you said, it's anthemic, it's huge, it's fucking melodic. Why hate on them. Out of ALL hair bands in history, they are the best composers and the best musicians. What's so wrong about easy-ish music? It is of great quality both in production and artistry. Cheesy? Hell yeah, and the world needs some cheese from time to time, or it would be an insufferably boring place. Not everything needs to be super transcendental and progressive. They exist for us to have a good time and appreciate good music. If it weren't for them, I wouldn't have listened to rock or even metal, and I know it's the same story for a lot of people. I feel lucky I grew up with them. They deserve to be on that rock & roll hall of fame, even though we all know that is bullshit anyway. They are a huge part of popular culture and there are whole generations raised on their music. Good for them! Let em haters hate.

They hate Bon Jovi because of their major hits - and a lot of them are love songs. I don't know why, but especially men, and especially those who're seriously into metal and rap, seem to think it's cool to shit on love songs. But when you judge Bon Jovi only on their ballads you are not doing them justice. Just listen to something like Keep the Faith (especially a live version from the 90s or early 00s), Hey God, Fear, Dry County, they did make some serious hard rock in the 90s with some really great touches of metal and grunge in some of their songs. And while they have became more mellow in the 00s, songs like Undivided (which I'd actually call heavy metal) or Have a Nice Day still rock. Hell, their concept album Lost Highway is a country album and while most songs sound half-assed, because, you know, country, they managed to have some songs on there that sound actuall awesome - for country songs. And while John Shanks is currently over-producing the studio records to death and the guitar solos are just medicore (until Phil X gets a chance to fill them with life on the live stage), they still manage to save themselves somehow. Even their latest album (This House Is Not for Sale) was not half-bad, besides being over-produced pop rock. I don't think they're the greatest band ever, but they're a good band nonetheless that simply gets shit for managing to be successful and to stay sucessful simply due to the genre they started in, glam metal.

Honestly, I'm kinda surprised by the fact that you didn't totally hate Bon Jovi (especially since they have some very very very cheesy love songs in their catalog). BTW, you're absolutely right, he lost lots of the vocal power he had, and he knows it. He even addressed this issue in one of the songs (God bless this mess) in their latest album. He's still kicking some butt, though. As for the fact that they have such a huge following, I think that part of the reason why is that Jon Bon Jovi is a likeable person even to this day. He kept his feet on the ground, he does lots of charity work and he does what he likes to do.

I like to show people Van Halen when I'm introducing them to metal. Really what people latch onto are not screamy vocals, and a nice riff or solo you can get into and digest easy. Sabbath and Ozzy have this too with Crazy Train especially.

My progression into metal is roughly as follows Bon Jovi -> Godsmack -> Disturbed -> Metallica -> Nightwish -> Dream Theater -> Gojira -> Amon Amarth -> Opeth blah blah blah, the point I'm trying to emphasize is that without those first few bands on this list, I never would have enjoyed heavier stuff. That's why I don't understand the hate that gets thrown at the softer stuff.

To be fair to Bon Jovi, they got on the hair metal trend early and rate among the best of the genre alongside bands like Def Leppard. They were definitely a cut above the likes of Warrant and Cinderella that dominated during the late 80’s and early 90’s. Aside from number of band members (and arms) still around, Def Leppard & Bon Jovi shared a lot of similarities career-wise. They're both best remembered for their early hits which landed squarely in the "hard rock" arena, and then for having softened their sound dramatically in the immediate aftermath of their peak popularity. They're both somewhat unfairly lumped in with the "hair bands" of the 80s, but they both went on to create some incredible and diverse music in future years which was largely ignored by the masses. In short, I wholeheartedly believe that both are worthy of induction.

I am one of the fortunate few who had a mom that played everything. Rock, Punk Rock, Rap, Classical, Jazz, Heavy Metal, Pop, Swing, and even Funk for me despite how she hated that one the most. She bought all sorts of albums and made sure that I at least gave something a chance, and never told me not to listen to it. So long as I didn't sing the swear words before I turned 13, I was fine. So I find it incredibly depressing when people my age or younger than me have next to no knowledge of music before the year 2000. Half of the time it's because parents seem to forget what it was like being a kid/teen so they forbid their children from doing anything remotely interesting. My mom told me she promised herself that she would not do to me, what her parents did to her, and she has kept true to that promise well past 2 decades. I am glad my musical taste is eclectic and that I like everything. I just wish younger people were more open to trying new things.

He had to use steroids to get through his grueling tour schedule in the 80s. Livin' on a Prayer was a big part of it, even after he stopped singing the high part of the chorus and tuned it down a half-step, but other high songs like Breakout, Never Say Goodbye, Let it Rock, Living in Sin, Get Ready, etc. also played a part

Th first albums I ever bought with my own money were "Slippery When Wet" & "New Jersey" (NJ was brand new). I loved the shit out of both of them & really got into the hair metal/arena rock scene in the late 80s. While it's not my first, second or even 100th choice to listen to today, my musical journey to things like Opeth, Dream Theater & Symphony X began with silly little Bon Jovi. At 8 years old, I thought the main riff from "Lay Your Hands on Me" was bone crushing and set off a hunger for heavy guitar. So, thank you, Bon Jovi, for eventually introducing me to the greatness that is Opeth.

The kids' reactions in the video really disappointed me. It's not so much the fact that most of the kids did not like Bon Jovi (I'm biased, they're my favorite band of all time), but it hurts hearing them talk about it. Or moreso, what they didn't talk about. The ones who said they didn't like Bon Jovi had zero reasoning as to why. I know they're kids, and they're probably not used to hearing this kind of music on the regular, but it hurts knowing they've talked about Guns n Roses, Queen, AC/DC, Avenged Sevenfold, and other rock bands with mostly thorough insight. And then I watch this video, and it's just "Oh they sound horrible" or "It's not my style". I don't mind that they don't like Bon Jovi, but at least talk about why you don't. It would've been better if the Teens and generations up reacted to this instead of the kids, in my opinion.

Evelina999 It's more of the lack of reasoning as to why they don't like Bon Jovi. When you compare the way the kids criticized Bon Jovi to the way Mike had his critiques about Bon Jovi, Mike has solid reasoning behind his opinions. Whereas the kids who didn't like Bon Jovi pretty much said "I don't like them". The reactions of the kids fell flat in this video compared to the other ones they have done.

Jorge Rodirguez No I completely agree lol. Bon Jovi has a lot of hokey and corny songs lyrically. But I'm able to get behind it because of the melody and the conviction in Jon's voice. But to each their own.

9:20 Same, with me, haha! This is not only my favourite song by Bon Jovi, but one of my favourite songs of all time! I was 6 years old when it came out and it changed my life (^^). I can name only a few other songs, which hit me that hard right on the spot and catched me with an awesome melody and energy. When I got older, learned english (I'm from Germany btw) and understood the lyrics, it became even more awesome to me, because of the message: to live your own life, do what you want, believe in yourself and fulfill your dreams. Very motivating!! :D The music-video is also awesome! Shiri Appleby (from "Roswell" and "UnReal") appears in it!
