Kids In Court - Stephanie's Story & Updates 24 Years After She Faced the Judge

First filmed in 1999, this video takes a look back at the story of teenage mom Stephanie. We met Stephanie during the most challenging time of her life, when she had just returned home after time in foster care. But as Stephanie tried to get her life together, we learned during a day of court hearings why she ended up in front of juvenile judge Violia Taliaferro.
This video follows Stephanie through a year of juvenile court hearings and later, the birth of her baby. We then hear from the state's attorney on how cases like Stephanie's present unique challenges for social service workers and even the judge herself. The end of this video also features an epilogue on how Stephanie's life changed since we met her in 1999 and ultimately, what happened to the family as of 2023, 24 years after we first met them.
SPOILER ALERT: The following epilogue below is being provided for our visually impaired viewers. This epilogue is also included at the end of the video.
Epilogue: Stephanie eventually went back to school and got her diploma. Later in life she got married and had 3 additional children. Kirsten went on to have 3 kids of her own. In 2021, Stephanie was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Sadly, she died on Christmas day, 2022 at the age of 36. She leaves behind 4 kids and 3 grandchildren.

@remywhite4377 - it was a devastating outcome for a young girl who did so much to make the best of life. She was such a sweet soul. We were thankful we got to know her.

gosh, the last few seconds about her dying at 36 from cancer took the air out of the entire thing. just devastating.

I’m glad she was able to keep her kids BUT it sounds like the cycle was repeated for her to be a grandmother of 3 at the age of 36. And it sounds like her mother’s message of “get them on birth control “ was just empty words.

It’s her responsibility? She’s in 7th grade. A 7th grader should be able to come home from school and play, not have to take care of a baby.

If the dad wants to be a part of his child’s life why is the court refusing him that right. That just seems wrong to me. I sure bet the court would be happy to collect child support while denying a child the human right to having his biological dad. That’s just wrong.

@@user-ch8xp6do9b it doesn’t matter, they were in a mutual relationship, they were both teenagers, and most of all he’s the dad. The child should have a human right to know and be with her dad. The only reason a dad should be cut out would be if he was a threat to the child’s life. I would even say since the girl got pregnant, they should have let them get married and MAYBE she wouldn’t have been a grandmother of 3 at the age of 13.

@@stst77It doesn’t matter the age? She can’t consent to sex. It was rape. A 19 year old doesn’t date a 13 year old. He groomed and manipulated her.

@@stst77Are you kidding me? There's no such thing as a 13yr old minor child, being in a "mutual relationship" with a 19yr adult. Him sleeping with her is statutory rape! He should've been arrested!
