Dr. Jamie Howard, senior clinical psychologist at the Child Mind Institute, joined CBS Mornings to discuss the youth mental health crisis and shares tips on how parents can have an open conversation with their teens about mental health and social media.
“It’s so important for parents to stay connected to their teens. Teens don’t always love to stay connected to their parents. It’s a time when they want more independence, and yet parents must do their very best to lean in and take advantage of natural opportunities. Try to talk to them when you’re doing a parallel activity like driving or clearing the table after dinner, with less eye contact, so it doesn’t feel so intense,” Dr. Howard advised.
She also recommended that if you think your child might need professional help it is best to err on the side of caution and schedule an evaluation.
