A Winter's Tale - The Shah's Miura

Supercars...they're a breed apart, aren't they? Revered like rare species in a zoo, pampered and seldom allowed out into the wild, changing hands amongst rival collectors as their fury and spectacle-charged original purpose becomes an ever more distant memory. It wasn't always that way, and one illustrious owner in particular thought nothing of getting behind the wheel for a fast blast regardless of where and when. He's long since moved on, but we tracked down his car and it was eager to relive its youth. We decided to put it through its paces as His Imperial Highness might have almost half a century ago. You made my evening - perfect. Snow and Miura, not to believe. I remember as a young boy, about 7 or 8 y. old, in 1968/1969 ,a customer (his last name was Ochs) of my parents (Birkenfeld near Pforzheim, Germany) came with a Miura, yellow, to pick up his stuff. In our street (usual civil area) for the boys it was like an Ufo landed. We all knew the Miura from our playcards. It was not to believe. Years later we heard he was a bad guy ;-), prisoned, because he smuggled too much gold from switzerland. No idea, what his Miura happened to. And, no fake, in the same village, Birkenfeld, there was about 8 years later, another Miura to see. Orange. He belonged to a Citroen enthusiast, who owned him i think for min. 10 Years. He sometimes put him out of the garage for cleaning. He told us, he drove about 300 km/h (we knew this max-speed) on the autobahn at night between Darmstadt and Frankfurt, because there was little traffic... That was the time, a Miura was worth to be bought by everyone who had some money more to spend. Not like today ;-)

American actor Nicolas Cage owned that Miura for a while. Then an Iranian in London, Reza Rashidian. The car was on the Lawn at Pebble Beach a few years ago when owned by a well-known collector in the Pacific NW, who I believe still owns it today.

Used to have a Miata, drove it every winter. Sometimes when it was snowing I would put the top down just to experience the snow swirling all around me. Magical. With winter tires and a seventy pound sand bag in the trunk it handled really well on snowy roads. This video reminded me of how fun a rear drive car with good traction is on snow packed roads.

I bought a new MGB late in 1973__I took delivery of it the Friday of Labor Day weekend, so as I type this, exactly forty-nine (49) years ago today__and I drove it through Detroit's winters for two (2) years. While I didn't (yet) have the insight to carry a bag of sand in the trunk, I did haul around my electrician's toolbox everywhere I went. I have plenty of snow stories with that car, though I don't recall any that involved putting the top down (just as well, as I'm certain I'd have destroyed the plastic window in those temps). Fast-forward to November of 2000, and my not-yet wife buys a '99 BMW M Rdstr for me to drive (CPO w/5400 miles AND the factory hdtp). We vowed that we'd take the hardtop off (at this point, we hadn't even seen the soft top yet) the first time the temperature went above 32*F. We headed out on a short drive, and it began snowing; at 32-34*F the snow is pretty wet, and on the 1st swipe of the windshield wipers it dumped a pile of slush in my lap! I drove it through eleven (11) Ohio winters (before we moved to Florida) augmenting the electrician's toolbox with a 50# bag__sometimes 2 bags__of whole kernel corn, since we fed the ducks living on the creek behind the house. With dedicated snowtires all around, it was master of handling the snow & ice conditions, leading my wife to claim that it steered better than her AWD X5. Not related to Miuras or driving in the snow, but with an undeniable connection to today's timeline... On the Thursday before Labor Day weekend 2001, we took "factory delivery" of a 2001 M Rdstr. This being my first "new" car since buying the MGB twenty-eight (28) years prior. Now twenty-one (21) years after that, we still have both ('99 & '01) M Rdstrs, and around 8-yrs ago, I added a '99 M Coupe to the fleet. Through it all, I have also managed to hang onto the 1957 Austin-Healey that I bought in 1978, lest anyone think that my 2-seat sports cars constitute a mid-life crisis... A note to Mr. Innocenti: I did have six (6) occupants in my MGB once, and with the top up; myself and five (5) skinny little high school girls! Hey c'mon, I was only 18 at the time myself!

What a wonderful video, I can't believe I've only just discovered it. I have a serious question, did the Shah ever have more than one Miura? I remember a car advert in a magazine from about 30 years ago that was selling a dark blue Miura with cream interior, and it was advertised as having been owned by the Shah. Seeing this, I wondered if had owned more than one? Thanks for the video.

I hear that modern Lamborghinis tend to burst into flames when they get hot, especially if they are revved at low speed. It's because owners like to fit lightweight exhaust systems for a stronger noise, and these systems lack sufficient heat shielding. Lots of revs at liw speed, especially if frustrated at being stuck in a traffic jam means burnt Lambo

Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Now they want to slow down all the gas station fuel pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime :-(
