The Reunion: 1973-2013 - The Last Lamborghini Miura

He's been the public face of Lamborghini, at least to many of their visiting clients and journalists, for decades through good times and bad. The factory even named a car after him, and he's still doing what he does best: test driving Lamborghinis. His name is Valentino Balboni and on 5th September 2013 he celebrates the 40th anniversary of his first ever official test drive.

Avevo 10 anni quando una Miura si fermò di fronte ad un bar, senza benzina era il 1972, ancora me la ricordo come adesso, un signore distinto scese, e ci chiese dove avrebbe trovato della benzina, io gli dissi, se mi dai i soldi te la vado a prendere al distributore, così fu, con la mia bicicletta rossa ed una tanica, corsi a prendergli 10 litri di super, ero felice di aver fatto ciò, poi il signore con l’aiuto di un altro , metterono la benzina, tentò diverse volte di farla partire, ma il motore si ingolfò , nel frattempo si era radunata una sciamata di persone, che aiutarono a spingere , dopo qualche sussulto, la belva emise il primo ruggito, ci ringraziò, pagando un gelato a noi bambini, e partí, era color verde chiaro, non seppi mai chi fu, fu parecchi anni dopo che accettai di fare il tunnel di lavaggio assieme ad un collega, dentro alla fabbrica di Santa Agata Bolognese, mentre stavo lavorando vidi una persona che mi sembrava di aver visto negli incontri di 🥊, si certo era Mike Tyson, che si portò a casa una Diablo gialla, superlativa, quando finimmo il lavoro, ci fecero visitare la fabbrica, fui impressionato sopratutto dalla sequenza di accensione del motore, della Diablo, che mi ricordava, come un giorno spingendo a mano una Miura, cantava i numeri ...1-7-4-10-2-8-6-12-3-9-5-11 che musica.

Beautiful! But for all the years he busted his ass for Lamborghini I was shocked to hear he doesn’t own one. The factory should’ve made a way for him to have one. Still should! I’m truly shocked! Here in America if someone puts that much work and effort into a product we reward them better! I admit I haven't the clue what Kidson is. However, in early September 1971 I happened to be in the center of Latina, South of Rome, looking for some wheels. Went into a showroom that handled used vehicles, so they had this Miura S in lime green color parked there, looking all lonesome. I did not even have a clue what the heck it was until then. Not sure what year it was, but only had 24.000 kilometers on its odo. The dealer figured all Americans want something like that, plus he kept insisting that the car will do 320 kilometers per hour on the autostrada (because the last number on its odometer was 320). I believe the maximum speed you could do legally do back then on the autostrada was 130 KPH, not 320. He wanted to pull out the thing for us to test drive it. He kept repeating the 320 Km/hour top speed claim. He we opened up the hood in the back and the thing has 12 cylinders! At long last, I dissuaded him and ended up with a used Alfa Romeo instead. The type with only 4 cylinders.

They were poles apart in most respects :-) Unfortunately it's nearly impossible to watch Wallace featuring as a test driver and as a technical consultant in his years at Lambo. He was a shy guy or possibly just not so friendly however he spent over two decades here in Italy so,at the end of the day,I guess he actually felt comfortable at Lamborghini experience dept. notwithstanding such an italian environment he had to be dealing with on daily basis.
